Constance Kuffer, 64
Was Co-Owner Of Sub and Stuff in Mountainside
Constance Kuffer, 64, of Mountainside died on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Cranford, she moved to Mountainside 50 years ago.
Mrs. Kuffer had been co-owner with her husband, Ernest W. Kuffer, of Sub & Stuff, a submarine shop in Mountainside, for 10 years before retiring 20 years ago.
She also was a bookkeeper for the Atmos Engineering Company in Kenilworth for five years.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a daughter, Debra L. Kuffer; a son, E. Scott Kuffer; three sisters, Patricia Smellkoff, Karen Salisbury and Christine White, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 13, at Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield.
James Sanford, 73
Air Force Veteran; Was Quality Control Representative
James B. Sanford, 73, of Mountainside died on Tuesday, February 9, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Pearl River, New York, he had lived in Hillside before moving to Mountainside in 1971.
Mr. Sanford had been a quality control representative for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford, Connecticut for 34 years before retiring in 1987.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
He served in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Geraldine A. Sanford; a son, James G. Sanford; a daughter, Marissa L. Kressman, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 13, in the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Carolyn Deichert, 91
Executive Secretary; Worked at Aetna Insurance for 15 Years
Carolyn Nuse Deichert, 91, of Middlesex died on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Millburn and in Westfield for 39 years before moving to Middlesex four years ago.
Mrs. Deichert had been an executive secretary for the Aetna Insurance Company in Morristown for 15 years before retiring in 1972. She had previously worked at Prudential Insurance in Newark for more than 10 years.
She was a member of the Middlesex Senior Citizens and a former member of the Westfield and Mountainside Senior Citizens.
Mrs. Deichert was a member for 40 years of the First Baptist Church in Westfield. She was predeceased by her husband, Victor L. Deichert, in 1977, and by her brother, Frederick Nuse, in 1996.
Surviving are a son, James M. Deichert of Chamblee, Georgia; a daughter, Carol Ann Rick of Middlesex; three grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 13, at the First Baptist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Taggart-Chamberlain Funeral Home in Bound Brook.

Landscape Designer; Youth Advisor at Presbyterian Church
Jennifer Anne Ryan, 28, of Westfield died on Tuesday, February 16, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Rahway, she had lived in Westfield for the last 23 years.
Ms. Ryan graduated from the University of Rhode Island at Kingston with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Landscape Architecture in 1992.
She was a self-employed landscape designer for Jennifer Ryan Landscape Design in Westfield for the last four years.
She was a member of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the Westfield Garden Club, the Downtown Westfield Corporation and the Architectural Review Board of Westfield.
Ms. Ryan was active in The Presbyterian Church in Westfield Youth Fellowship program, where she was a Youth Advisor.
Surviving are her parents, Peter C. and Elizabeth A. Ryan of Westfield; a sister, Allison P. Ryan, also of Westfield, and her boyfriend, George R. Reynolds of Roselle Park.
Visitation will be today, Thursday, February 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, February 20, at 11 a.m. at The Presbyterian Church in Westfield. Burial will follow at The Revolutionary Cemetery in Westfield.

Natalie Miles Kucinski, 87
Local Artist; Was Fashion Illustrator and Instructor
Natalie Miles Kucinski, 87, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, February 11, 1999 at home.
Born in Carteret, she resided in Scotch Plains for the past 27 years.
She graduated in 1933 from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, and from the Art Students League in New York City. She studied under Maxwell Stewart Simpson.
Mrs. Kucinski had been self-employed as an artist. She had worked as a display artist with Sommers Studio in New York City; as a fashion illustrator for Bambergers in Newark and for The Newark Evening News, and as an art teacher for the Scotch Plains Women’s Club and the Scotch Plains-Fanwood YMCA.
She was a member of the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains, and of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Historical Society.
Surviving are her husband, Edward S. Kucinski; two daughters, Antoinette K. McLaughlin of Bethesda, Maryland and Natalie Miles Kucinski of Scotch Plains; a son, Russell M. Kucinski of Anchorage, Alaska, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, February 20, at the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church. Funeral services were held privately through the Funeral Service of New Jersey, Inc. in Hillside.

Dr. Edward Bourns, 91
Former Resident; Chief of Anesthesia at Rahway Hospital
Dr. Edward G. Bourns, 91, a former longtime resident of Westfield, died on Thursday, February 11, 1999 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Born in Spring Lake, Michigan on May 29, 1907, he had lived in Westfield for 40 years before moving to Albuquerque eight years ago.
Dr. Bourns formerly served as Chief of Anesthesia at Rahway Hospital. He was a trustee of the Medical Society of the State of New Jersey, and a member of the American Medical Association and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
He was a graduate of Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio and Rush Medical College in Chicago.
He served with the United States Medical Corps in the European Theater during World War II.
Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Frances C. Bourns; three daughters, Barbara Bourns of San Francisco, Nancy Halpern of Menlo Park, California and Elizabeth Maloney of Jacksonville, Florida; a son, Dr. Gordon Bourns of Albuquerque; a sister, Virginia Jeffrey of Cleveland, Ohio; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Stella Theresa Kilduff, 83, of Ocean Springs, Mississippi died on Monday, February 8, 1999 in Biloxi, Mississippi.
Born in Warrior Run, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Scotch Plains for many years before moving to Ocean Springs seven years ago.
She was predeceased by her husband, William C. Kilduff, Sr.
Surviving are her daughter, Janis Martin of New York; a son, William C. Kilduff, Jr. of Ocean Springs; two sisters, Helen Everit of Kingsley, Pennsylvania and Pauline Bennetski of Clifton; a brother, Joseph Banashek of Churchton, Maryland, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 16, at New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown, Mississippi.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs.

Was Day Care Teacher At Centers in New York and New Jersey
Mary E. Daniels, 79, of Neptune died on Friday, February 5, 1999 at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.
Born in Millers Tavern, Virginia, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Neptune more than 40 years ago.
Mrs. Daniels was a day care teacher in New York, and most recently taught at the I.C.C.C. Daycare Center in Asbury Park.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gates W. Daniels, Sr., in 1991.
Surviving are a daughter, Cynthia Daniels of Neptune; a son, Gates W. Daniels, Jr.; two sisters, Eliza Holmes and Susan Baylor, both of Millers Tavern; a brother, Warner Berry of Millers Tavern; two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, February 13, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Neptune.
Arrangements were under the direction of Brown’s Funeral Home in Plainfield.
Mildred Libby Cook, 88
Former Teacher; Was Past President of Laurel League
Mildred Libby Cook, 88, of Westport, Connecticut died on Wednesday, February 10, 1999 at home.
Born in Lowell, Massachusetts on September 2, 1910, she had lived in Westfield from 1953 to 1991, when she relocated to Connecticut.
Mrs. Cook was a former teacher and educator in Chelmsford, Massachusetts.
She was a member of the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, and a Past President of the Laurel League Catholic Women’s Club in Plainfield.
She also was a benefactor of St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark, and a member of St. Luke’s Church in Westport.
Mrs. Cook graduated from Wheaton College in 1930.
She was predeceased by her parents, Irwin R. and Katherine Barry Cook, and by her husband, J. Franklin Cook.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Bloomer of Westport; a son, Roger H. Cook of New Canaan, Connecticut, and five grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, February 13, at St. Aloysius Church in New Canaan. Interment took place at Lakeview Cemetery, also in New Canaan.
Arrangements were handled by the F. Hoyt Funeral Home in New Canaan.
