Florence M. Sharkey, 87
Was Secretary For Scotch Plains Township for 15 Years
Florence M. Sharkey, 87, of Hillsborough died on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Scotch Plains for 52 years before moving to Hillsborough 12 years ago.
Mrs. Sharkey had been a secretary with the Township of Scotch Plains for 15 years before retiring in 1975.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edwin C. Sharkey, in 1986.
Surviving are a son, Thomas E. Sharkey of Bayonne; a sister, Genevieve Doorley of Toms River, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, on Saturday, January 23. Interment took place at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.

Ada Wheatley, 86
Longtime Saleswoman; Westfield Day Care and Church Volunteer
Ada Whitbeck Wheatley, 86, of Westfield died on Thursday, January 21, 1999 in the Westfield Network, Genesis ElderCare Center.
Born in Mount Washington, Massachusetts, she lived in Westfield since 1928.
Mrs. Wheatley had been a saleswoman for many years at McHugh Clothing Store and Jane Smith, both of Westfield, before retiring in 1989.
She was a parishioner of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Mrs. Wheatley was also a volunteer at Westfield Day Care Center and with Helping Hands and Hearts at St. Helen’s Church.
She was predeceased by her husband, John P. Wheatley, Sr., in 1964.
Surviving are her daughter, Elizabeth Cohen; three sons, Deputy Chief John P. Wheatley of the Westfield Police Department, Joseph Wheatley and Kevin Wheatley, and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, January 25, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church. Interment was held at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

William R. Horne, 72
Chemical Engineer; Served as Plant Manager at Merck & Co.
William Ryan Horne, 72, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, died on Monday, January 18, 1999 in the Good Samaritan Medical Center in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Born in Tallahassee, Florida, he had lived in Scotch Plains, in Albany, Georgia and in Clonmel, Ireland, before moving to Florida in 1987.
Mr. Horne, who began his career as a chemical engineer with Merck and Company, Inc. in Elkton, Virginia, became Plant Manager of the Merck pharmaceutical manufacturing plants in Ireland.
In 1978, he returned to the United States to manage the Merck plant in Rahway. He retired in 1986 as Vice President of Manufacturing after 35 years with the firm.
Mr. Horne graduated in 1951 from Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
He served in the United States Navy Submarine Service during World War II.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Phyllis Simmerman Horne, in 1991.
Surviving are his second wife, Kitty Hisey Horne of Tampa, Florida; a son, Ryan Horne of Waynesville, North Carolina; two daughters, Carol Lally of Lawrenceville, Georgia and Gail Knight of Loganville, Georgia; two brothers, the Reverend Cleveland Horne of Moultrie, Georgia and former Florida Senate President Mallory Horne of Tallahassee; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in North Palm Beach, Florida on Thursday, January 21.
A service was also held at the Presbyterian Church in Elkton, Virginia on Sunday, January 24, followed by a graveside service at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Quattlebaum-Holleman-Burse Funeral Home in West Palm Beach, Florida.
Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society, the First Presbyterian Church of North Palm Beach, or to the Elkton Presbyterian Church.
Charles Dougert, Sr., 82
Army Veteran; Was Owner of Speedy TV Service Shops
Charles Dougert, Sr., 82, of Piscataway died on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he had lived in Plainfield from 1950 to 1963 before moving to Piscataway 36 years ago.
Mr. Dougert had been a television technician and the owner-operator of Speedy TV Service in Plainfield for 40 years, and Speedy TV Service in Piscataway for 25 years, before retiring at age 65.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a 30-year member of Dunellen Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5479 and a former member of American Legion Post No. 261 in Piscataway.
Mr. Dougert was a member for the past nine years of the Arbor Rescue Squad in Piscataway, where he served as a licensed and certified paramedic.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Wisniewski Dougert; three sons, Charles Dougert, Jr. of Plainfield, Donald E. Dougert, Sr. of Westfield and Franklyn J. Dougert of Piscataway; a daughter, Marian Freeman of Piscataway; a stepdaughter, Adele Morales of Piscataway; two sisters, Betty Nametko and Kate Dougert, both of Casselberry, Florida; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 25, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield, followed by a Mass at St. Stanislaus Kostka Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield.
Margaret Gottlick, 85
Margaret A. Gottlick, 85, a Westfield resident for more than 60 years, died on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at home.
Mrs. Gottlick had been a Supervisor for New Jersey Bell for over 30 years before retiring. She had worked in various offices, the last of which was in Newark.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Gottlick, in 1945.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Wren of Mission Viejo, California and Judith E. Kalbach of Willingboro; a brother, Walter Schaefer of Fairfax, Virginia; a sister, Eleanor Welz of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 25, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Amerina Importico, 83
Amerina Di Santo Importico, 83, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in the Montazzoli province of Chiete, Italy, she moved to the United States in 1933.
Mrs. Importico was a member of the St. Nicholas Women’s Auxiliary of Scotch Plains. She was also a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, Anthony Importico, in 1986.
Surviving are five in-laws and six nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 23, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
George Winter, 81
George Winter, 81, of Iselin died on Tuesday, January 19, 1999 at Rahway Hospital.
Born in Newark, he lived in Iselin for the past 32 years.
Mr. Winter had been employed by CO-TWO Fire Equipment, later known as Norris Industries of Newark, for 40 years before retiring in 1976.
He was a member of St. Cecelia’s Roman Catholic Church in Iselin.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Anne Semenock Winter; a son, Gregory Winter of Westfield; a daughter, Georgeanne Pearsall of Budd Lake; a sister, Amelia Gilchrist of Iselin, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services took place on Friday, January 22, at the Thomas J. Costello Funeral Home in Iselin, followed by a Mass at St. Cecelia’s Church.

Richard Lattanzio, Sr., 74
Truck Driver; Was Custodian for Woodbridge Schools
Richard W. Lattanzio Sr., 74, of Menlo Park Terrace in Metuchen died on Tuesday, January 19, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived there before moving to Menlo Park Terrace 35 years ago.
Mr. Lattanzio had been a Teamster truck driver for many years and was also employed as a custodian for six years in the Woodbridge schools.
He was a member of St. Cecelia’s Roman Catholic Church in Iselin.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Geraldine Lattanzio. A brother, Charles Lattanzio, died in 1995.
Surviving are his wife, Randazzo Lattanzio; two daughters, Jo-Ann O’Gardy of Utica, New York and Carmella Appezzato of Scotch Plains; two sons, Richard Lattanzio, Jr. of Trenton and Anthony Lattanzio of Woodbridge; a brother, Joseph Lattanzio of Belleville; three sisters, Laura Rios of Newark, Lena Gallo of Florida and Katherine Wanko of Newark; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 23, at the Thomas J. Costello Funeral Home in Iselin, followed by a Mass at St. Cecilia’s Church.
Doris Kreis, 73
Bell Telephone Retiree; Scout Supporter and Member of Guild
Theresa Doris May Kreis, 73, of Watchung died on Sunday, January 24, 1999 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born and raised in Elizabeth, she moved to Watchung in 1958.
She graduated from Battin High School in Elizabeth.
Mrs. Kreis had worked in the accounting department of New York Bell Telephone Company in New York City for 15 years before retiring in 1955. She later became a homemaker. She also worked part-time for two physicians for 12 years.
She was a member of the Wilson Memorial Union Church in Watchung and the church’s women’s guild.
Mrs. Kreis was an active supporter of the Watchung Girl and Boy Scout troops and was active in events sponsored by the Optimist Club of Watchung.
Surviving are her husband, Harold Kreis; two sons, Harold Kreis, Jr. and Douglas Kreis, both of Green Brook; two daughters, Deborah A. Brown of Meyersville and Wendy R. Day of Manville; two brothers, Raymond Saunderson of Cranford and Warren Saunderson of Fair Lawn; three sisters, Ruth Milton of Roselle, Lillian Vogel of Mountainside and Margaret DeVinney of Westfield, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 30, at the Wilson Memorial Union Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Miriam H. Moran, 104
Former Teacher; Oldest Member of Somerville Church
Miriam H. Moran, 104, of Somerville died on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at Manor by the Sea in the Ocean Grove section of Neptune.
Born in Somerville, she had lived in Westfield and Washington before moving to Ocean Grove 16 years ago.
Mrs. Moran had been a teacher with the Somerville Board of Education for 30 years, retiring in 1960.
She was the oldest member of the First United Methodist Church in Somerville.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Moran, in 1951.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 25, at Somerville Cemetery in Somerville.
Arrangements were handled by the Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home in Somerville.
