Dorothy Longell, 71
Retired Bookkeeper; Church Founder Served on Rescue Squad
Dorothy M. Longell, 71, of Mountainside died on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at home.
Born in Irvington, she had lived in Berkeley Heights for 45 years before moving to Mountainside two years ago.
Mrs. Longell had been a secretary and bookkeeper at Bedminster Florist for 16 years before retiring in October of 1996.
She was a founding member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Berkeley Heights and a charter member of the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad.
She was predeceased by her husband, Clifford W. Longell, in 1974, and by a daughter, Linda L. Swackhamer, in 1990.
Surviving are her mother, Etta Mayer of Union; two sons, Leslie L. Longell of Lutz, Florida and Leland L. Longell of High Bridge, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, January 25, at the Westminster Presbyterian Church.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Layton Funeral Home in Bedminster.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Berkeley Heights Rescue Squad, Locust and Snyder Avenues, Berkeley Heights, 07922.

Dr. Edgar Santoro, 73
Family Physician; Maintained Local Practice for 40 Years
Dr. Edgar Vincent Santoro, 73, of Edison died on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at home.
Born in The Bronx, he had lived in Scotch Plains for more than 40 years before moving to Edison several years ago.
A 1939 graduate of Fordham University in The Bronx, Dr. Santoro maintained a family practice in Scotch Plains for more than 40 years.
He was appointed to the reserve corps of Public Health Service, United States Department of Health, Education and Welfare, in 1955. A year later, he was named Diplomat of the National Board of Medical Examiners by the National Board of Medical Examiners of the United States of America.
Dr. Santoro was certified by the State Board of Medical Examiners of New Jersey in 1956. He served his residency in pediatrics at St. Michael’s Hospital in New York from 1956 to 1958.
He was certified in 1977 by The American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians. In 1980, he was appointed a clinical instructor at the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He was recognized by the trustees and faculty of the New York Medical College and Fifth Avenue Hospitals.
He served as a diplomat for the American Board of Family Practice from 1990 to 1997. A member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, he also belonged to the Medical Society of New Jersey, which awarded him its Physicians’ Recognition Award.
Dr. Santoro, who was board certified by the American Board of Family Practice, was on the staff of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield for 40 years and was a senior attending physician in its Department of Family Practice.
Dr. Santoro had also served that hospital as Chairman of the Utilization Review Committee and was a member of the hospital’s Medical Executive Committee.
He was a clinical instructor in family practice and had an appointment on the faculty of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Brunswick.
Dr. Santoro additionally was a Fellow of the American College of Medical Quality and served on the Performance Improvement Committee for the past five years.
During World War II, he served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers in the European Theater.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Ansanelli Santoro; three sons, David Santoro, Carl Santoro and Edgar Santoro, Jr.; three daughters, Elyse Santoro, Gina Diener and Ann Marie Santoro; a sister, Theresa Santoro, and six grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, January 23, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Memorial contributions may be made to Muhlenberg Hospice, care of Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center, Park Avenue and Randolph Road, Plainfield, 07060.

Edward Kookogey, 89
Active in Westfield; Co-founded Insurance Agency in the 1930s
Edward M. Kookogey, 89, of Bridgewater died on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at Morristown Memorial Medical Center in Morristown.
Born in Brooklyn in 1909, he had lived in Westfield for 50 years. He had lived in Tewksbury Township from 1964 to 1985, and also in Whitehouse Station before moving to Bridgewater in 1997.
He co-founded the S. M. Kookogey & Son insurance agency with his father, the late Samuel Kookogey, in the early 1930s. After his father left the business in 1936, Mr. Kookogey operated the firm in New York and Westfield for nearly 50 years before selling it to True & Associates in the early 1980s. He remained active at the agency until his retirement in November of 1997.
Mr. Kookogey attended Grant School, now Washington Elementary School, and graduated from Westfield High School in 1927. During high school, he played football and was Captain of the tennis team. He attended New York University while beginning his career in property and casualty insurance in New York.
He served with the Westfield Police Reserves during World War II.
In 1940, Mr. Kookogey served as local manager for the “Willkie for President” campaign and later became one of the founders of the Joint Civic Committee which, among other functions, nominated candidates for the Board of Education.
He was a 32nd degree Mason with Atlas Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons, now Atlas-Pythagoras. Mr. Kookogey was a member of the Rotary Club of Westfield and the Echo Lake Country Club, also in Westfield. In 1950, he founded the Black River Fish and Game Club near Pottersville with his father.
He served on the Planning Board in Tewksbury Township in Hunterdon County.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth Warner Kookogey, in 1987.
Surviving are his son, Richard W. Kookogey of Harmony Township; two daughters, Carol Jones of Bridgewater, with whom he lived after his retirement, and Sue Willits of Chestertown, Maryland; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held yesterday, Wednesday, January 27, at the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the American Cancer Society or to the Building Fund of the Fairmount Presbyterian Church.

Nancy Benson, 70
Active in Church; Was Attendance Secretary For 29 Yrs.
Nancy S. Benson, 70, of Plainfield died on Sunday, January 17, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Plainfield 44 years ago.
She graduated from Westfield High School in 1946 and attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
Mrs. Benson was an attendance secretary at Plainfield High School for the past 29 years.
She was a member of the First Park Baptist Church since 1948, and a past Deaconess of the church.
She was also a Past Diaconate Chairwoman of the church, an active participant in the Loaves and Fishes Program, and a Sunday school teacher.
Mrs. Benson was a Chairwoman of the Grant Avenue Community Center in Plainfield. She also was a past den mother with the Cub Scouts in Plainfield.
Surviving are a son, Richard A. Benson of North Plainfield, and a brother, Walter F. Smith, 3rd of Fairfax, Virginia.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 23, at the First-Park Baptist Church.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Thomas D. Ryder, 86
Red Cross Director; Marine in Several World War II Battles
Thomas Doyle Ryder, 86, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, January 21, 1999 at the Delair Nursing Home in Linden.
Born in Elizabeth, he lived in Scotch Plains for 33 years.
Mr. Ryder had been the Director of the American Red Cross Options Program in Plainfield before retiring in 1988.
He served in the United States Marine Corps Third Division during World War II, and fought in the battles of Iwo Jima, Bouganville, Guam and Mariannas. He was the Past Commandant of the Marine Corps League Martin Danowski Detachment in Linden.
Surviving are his wife, Ann I. Ryder; a daughter, Ann M. Krisak; a son, Timothy F. Ryder, and two sisters, Vera Libonate and Irene Kynch.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 30, at 10 a.m. in the Grace United Methodist Church in Wycoff.

Hyman Abramowitz, 82
Army Veteran; Owner of Union Dinettes for 20 Years
Hyman Abramowitz, 82, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, January 25, 1999 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Fall River, Massachusetts, he had lived in Newark and Union before moving to Scotch Plains six years ago.
Mr. Abramowitz had owned and operated Union Dinettes in Union for more than 20 years before retiring in 1978.
He was a member of Young Men of Zion in Irvington.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Sarah Abramowitz; his son and daughter-in-law, Ronald and Andy Abramowitz of Westfield; a brother, Max Abramowitz of Santa Monica, California; two sisters, Eve Stern of Atlantic City and Florence Abramowitz, and two grandchildren, Jesse Abramowitz and Ross Abramowitz.
Graveside services were held on Tuesday, January 26, in the Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Lucille A. Bordogna
Was Teacher At Holy Trinity School in Westfield
Lucille A. Bordogna of Union died on Monday, January 25, 1999 in Union Hospital.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Irvington before moving to Union in 1951.
Mrs. Bordogna had taught at Holy Trinity School in Westfield for many years before retiring. She previously had been a teacher at St. James School in Springfield and at St. Michael’s School in Union.
She earned teaching credits from Caldwell College in Caldwell.
Surviving are her husband, Orest V. Bordogna; a son, Charles Bordogna; three sisters, Anne Burke, Joan Conlon and Mildred Dutter, and two grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered tomorrow, Friday, January 29, at 10 a.m. in St. Rose of Lima Roman Catholic Church in Short Hills, following a funeral service at 9 a.m. at Haeberle and Barth Colonial Home in Union.

Beatrice Bullman, 84
Beatrice Bullman, 84, of East Orange died on Monday, January 25, 1999 at the East Orange Nursing Home in East Orange.
Born in Westfield, she had lived in Colonia before moving to the East Orange Nursing Home in 1970.
She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Colonia.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward R. Bullman, in 1965.
Surviving are her son, Edward A. Bullman of Edison; a brother, Jake Mc Dede, and two grandsons.
Graveside services will be held today, Thursday, January 28, at 1 p.m. in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Emanuel Carlino, 74
Emanuel Carlino, 74, of Westfield died on Tuesday, January 26, 1999 in Elizabeth General Medical Center in Elizabeth.
Born in Elizabeth, he lived in Westfield for 33 years.
Mr. Carlino, a master stone mason, had been a foreman with the International Laborers Union, Local No. 394, of Elizabeth for 30 years before retiring in 1987.
Surviving are his wife, Julia Carlino; two daughters, Margherita Brodo-Swick and Virginia Hanna; a son, Emanuel Carlino; a brother, Joseph Carlino, and seven grandchildren.
A Mass will be offered at 9 a.m. in St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Elizabeth, following the funeral from the Corsentino Home for Funerals in Elizabeth.

Polly Pelletier, 68
Real Estate Broker; Founded Mothers’ Sailing Organization
Polly Pelletier 68, of Wolfeboro, N. H. died on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at home.
Born in Mineola, N.Y., she had lived in Westfield, Fanwood and Vermont before moving to Wolfeboro 15 years ago.
Mrs. Pelletier was a real estate broker in Wolfeboro for the last 15
years. Previously, she had been a primary school teacher at the Hartridge School in Plainfield.
Mrs. Pelletier attended Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and the New York School of Fine Art.
She was a founder of the Mighty Mamas, a young mothers’ group of avid sailors in Weekapaug, R.I.
Surviving are a son, Todd Palmer Spayth; her mother, Mary Wallace Palmer; a brother, James Wallace Palmer, and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Monday, January 31, in the Lamington Presbyterian Church in Bedminster.
