Jean E. Townsend, 75
Jean E. Kenney Townsend, 75, of Westfield died on Monday, April 5, 1999 at the Clark Nursing Center in Clark.
Born in Westfield, she was a lifelong resident.
Mrs. Townsend was a homemaker. She was a member of a bowling league at Linden Lanes in Linden.
Mrs. Townsend had graduated from the former Holy Trinity High School in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henery Townsend, 2nd.
Surviving are his son, Henery Townsend, 3rd; three daughters, Judith Townsend, Casey Townsend, and Debra Mehaffey; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held today, Thursday, April 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.
Interment will be held at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made in Mrs. Townsend's name to any Hospice program.
Edward D. Opp, 72
Army Veteran; Research and Development Executive
Edward D. Opp, 72, of North Plainfield, died on Saturday, April 3, 1999 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lyons.
Born in Aurora, Indiana, he had lived in North Plainfield since 1958 and maintained a home in Camden, Maine.
Mr. Opp was employed in the Research and Development Department of the American Can Company for over 35 years before retiring in 1987.
He was a former member of the Society of Food Technologists, the American Legion, and the Republican National Committee.
He was also a member of The Church of the Holy Cross in North Plainfield.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army stationed in General MacArthur's headquarters in Tokyo, Japan.
He received a bachelor of science degree and a master of science degree from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and was a member of the university's Sigma Nu Fraternity.
He was predeceased by a son, David Edward Opp, in 1998.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Frances Perry Opp, and a daughter, Nancy Dentop Opp Boyland of Belle Mead.
Funeral Services were private. Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home in Fanwood.

Donald F. Bays, Jr., 47
Donald F. Bays, Jr., 47, of Westfield died on Tuesday, April 6, 1999 in Rahway Hospital.
Born in Philadelphia, he had lived in Oaklyn, Cherry Hill, and New Providence before moving to Westfield 22 years ago.
Mr. Bays was a roadman for the New Providence Department of Public Works for 27 years before retiring in December 1998.
He was a member of the New Jersey National Guard.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara Parlapiano Bays; two sons, Donald F. Bays, 3rd and Michael Bays of Westfield; a brother, Keith Bays of California; two sisters, Marianne Bays of Montclair and Barbara Wright of California; and his parents, Donald F. Bays, Sr. and Annasteen Bays of California.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, April 9, at 10 a.m. in the Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial in Summit.
Visitation will be today, Thursday, April 8, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Interment will be private.
Meyer Allen Freiman, 63
Was Owner, Pharmacist At Park Drugs, Scotch Plains
Meyer Allen Freiman, 63, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, April 6, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Scotch Plains since the age of 3.
Mr. Freiman had graduated from Brooklyn College of Pharmacy in 1958 and was the owner and pharmacist at Park Drugs in Scotch Plains from 1960 until his retirement in 1995.
He had served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1960 as a Corporal.
He was the chief of the pharmacy and the poison control officer at Rodriguez Army Hospital in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
He was a member of the Union County Pharmaceutical Society.
He was also a member of the Scotch Plains Rotary Club and the past chairman of the Scotch Plains Industrial Advisory Committee.
Mr. Freiman had served as a member of the Scotch Plains Board of Education for three years in the early 1970s.
He was a member of Beth Israel in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Elsa Zlotnikoff Freiman; a son, Jonathan Freiman; a daughter, Lisa Freiman; a sister, Helene Schechter; and one grandson.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, April 9, at 10 a.m. at The Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
John J. Barnes, 82
Merck Retiree; Elks and American Legion Member
John J. “Mike” Barnes, 82, of Westfield died on Saturday, February 26, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Philadelphia, he had lived in Rahway for many years before moving to Westfield in 1957.
Mr. Barnes had been employed by Merck and Company, Inc. in Rahway for 37 years before retiring in 1979. He was a member of the Merck and Company Quarter Century Club.
He also was a life member of the Rahway Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1075 and a member of the Rahway High School Football Hall of Fame.
Mr. Barnes served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 of the American Legion in Westfield.
He was a communicant of St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Linden.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Andrew Barnes and Paul Barnes, and two sisters, Jane Rack and Veronica O’Connor.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Jane Jeambey Barnes.
Private funeral services were arranged by the Pettit-Davis Funeral Home in Rahway. Interment took place in Rahway Cemetery.
Grace Chiara-Madden, 93
Grace V. Chiara-Madden, 93, of Manasquan died on Friday, March 3, 2000 at The Medicenter in Neptune City.
Born in Camden, she had lived in Jamesburg, Freehold Township and Whiting before moving to Manasquan.
She was a homemaker. She served as a volunteer airplane spotter for the United States government during World War II.
Mrs. Chiara-Madden was a longtime member of the Jamesburg Presbyterian Church. She was predeceased by her first husband, Louis Chiara, in 1955, and by her second husband, Joseph Madden, in 1974.
Surviving are two nieces, Doris Kozubske, with whom she lived, and Sharon Chiara of Mountainside; two nephews, Ralph Fisher and Marvin Fisher, both of Florida; a stepson, Jack Madden of Georgia, and a stepdaughter, Delores Cameron of California.
A service was held on Monday, March 6, at the Old Tennent Cemetery in Tennent.
Arrangements were handled by the C. H. T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home in Adelphia.
Charles V. Maso, 78
Charles V. Maso, 78, of Holiday City Carefree, Berkeley, died on Thursday, March 2, 2000 at Kensington Manor in Toms River.
Born in Freeland, Pa., he had lived in Bridgewater before moving to Holiday City Carefree 16 years ago.
Mr. Maso had been a lab technician at Union Carbide in Bound Brook before retiring in 1984.
He was a member of the Holiday City Carefree Anglers Club; the Holiday City Carefree Garden Club and the Holiday City Carefree Mens Club.
He was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Orthodox Church in Freehold.
Surviving are his wife, Catherine Kanyuck Maso; two sons, Eugene Maso of Roswell, Ga. and Lawrence Maso of State College, Pa.; a daughter, Anne Marie Daly of Oceanside, Calif.; seven brothers, Silvio Maso of Whiting, Manchester, Raymond Maso and Ernest Maso of Florida, Fred Maso, Robert Maso and John Maso, all of Freeland, Pa. and Lawrence Maso of Tennessee; two sisters, Madeline Pschar of Hillsborough and Ethel Paoletti of Fanwood; four grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Services were held on Monday, March 6, in St. Michael’s Orthodox Church in Freeland. Burial followed in St. Peter & Paul Cemetery, also in Freeland.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Toms River.
