Douglas M. Myrah, 66
PSE&G Manager Lecturer for American Cancer Society
Douglas M. Myrah, 66, of Beach Haven Terrace died on Saturday, March 4, 2000 at home.
Born in Manhattan, Kan., he had lived in Bridgewater before moving to Beach Haven Terrace in 1989.
He had been a summer resident of that community beginning in 1980.
Mr. Myrah had been employed for 32 years with Public Service Electric and Gas of Newark, retiring in 1989 as a division manager.
An adjunct professor at Cumberland County College from 1989 to 1992, he was also Director of Fire Command and Safety at Tropicana in Atlantic City.
He was a graduate of the New Jersey Institute of Technology, Class of 1955, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering and his Master of Science Degree in Management Engineering.
He did graduate work in environmental engineering at the University of Minnesota.
Mr. Myrah was a United States Army veteran, serving from 1957 to 1960.
He was a member of the American Management Association, the American Gas Association, which awarded him the Milton W. Heath, Sr. Memorial Award in 1986, and the National Fire Protection Association.
He was also a member of the American Cancer Society, where he was a Past Chairman and a guest lecturer on the nature of management.
Surviving are his wife of 41 years, Rosemaria Cristiano Myrah; four daughters, Susan Kujawski of Westfield, Theresa Lynn Broo of Hightstown, Cynthia Tilton of North Potomac, Md. and Allison Myrah of Milltown; a brother, John Myrah of Vienna, Va., and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today, Thursday, March 9, at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arneytown.
Arrangements were handled by the Bugbee-Riggs Funeral Home in Ship Bottom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Beach Haven Library, Third Street and Beach Avenue, Beach Haven, 08008.
Ruth E. Powell, 98
Ruth E. Powell, 98, died on Monday, March 6, 2000 at the Meridian Westfield Nursing Center in Westfield.
Born on Staten Island, she had lived in Avenel and later in Fords for many years before moving into the Meridian Center in late 1998.
Mrs. Powell was a former Director of The Butterflys, a band from Avenel.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Avenel and a former member of the Golden Circle, the Avenel Senior Citizens and the Olsen Towers Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold W. Powell; a son, Harold W. Powell, Jr., and a daughter, Ruth Millhiser.
Surviving are a granddaughter, Lynn Fromer, and a great-grandson, Jason Fromer.
Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, March 8, at the Costello-Koyen Funeral Home in Avenel.
Interment took place at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth.

Edna Kay Heffernan, 82
Parishioner; Active With GOP and Library Friends
Edna Kay Heffernan, 82, of Westfield died on Wednesday, March 8, 2000 at The Holly Health Care Center in Bridgewater.
Born in Altoona, Pa., she was raised and educated in Scranton, Pa. and came to Westfield in 1952.
Mrs. Heffernan was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield for many years.
She was also President of the Amity Club, a past member of the YWCA Board of Directors and a member of the Friends of the Westfield Library.
She was President of the Westfield Woman’s Republican Club and a Republican Committeewoman from 1981 to 1996.
She was predeceased by her husband, William R. Heffernan, in 1989. Surviving are two sons, Dr. Michael Heffernan of Reading, Pa. and Robert Heffernan of Pittsburgh, Pa.; a sister, Olive Phillips of Dallas, Pa., and four grandchildren.
Visitation will take place tomor row, Friday, March 10, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 11, at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice or to a charity of one’s choice.
Margaret J. Nugent, 76
Was Rosarian, Mothers Guild Member at Holy Trinity
Margaret J. Evans Nugent, 76, of Westfield died on Tuesday, March 7, 2000 at home.
Born in Jersey City, she was raised in Kearney and lived in Westfield since 1959.
Mrs. Nugent was a homemaker. A 40-year communicant of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, she was a member of the Holy Trinity Rosary Society and the Holy Trinity High School Mothers Guild.
She was also active with St. Joseph’s Social Center in Elizabeth.
Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Martin Nugent; three sons, Martin F. Nugent, Jr. of Woburn, Mass., Richard T. Nugent of Westfield and Michael J. Nugent of Fanwood; three daughters, Patricia A. Nugent of Woodbridge; Ellen J. Lanza of Westfield and Marjorie Harcourt of Fanwood, and nine grandchildren.
Visitation will take place at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield today, Thursday, March 9, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m., and at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, March 10.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Holy Trinity Church, with burial to take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Dorothy D. Garber, 90
Had Been Active With St. Paul’s and Community Players
Dorothy D. Garber, 90, a former longtime resident of Westfield, died on Thursday, March 2, 2000 in the Medical Facility of Normandy Farms Estates in Blue Bell, Pa.
Born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia on December 21, 1909, she had lived in Westfield for more than 47 years before moving with her husband to Normandy Farms Estates in 1984.
Mrs. Garber graduated from Germantown High School and the Philadelphia Normal School, where she received her Teacher’s Certificate in June of 1930.
She was active in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield, the Community Players and the Echo Lake Naturalists.
Mrs. Garber was also a Past President of the Mountainside Garden Club and the Women’s Auxiliary to the Merck Scientific Club.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Brooke Garber, in 1992.
Surviving are a son, John B. “Jack” Garber, Jr. of Cibolo, Tex.; a daughter, Margaret G. “Peggy” Philip of Madison; four grandsons and a great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at Normandy Farms Estates tomorrow, Friday, March 10, at 1:30 p.m.
A Committal Service and interment will take place in the Garth at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield on Saturday, March 11, at 3: 30 p.m.

Dominick Thomas, Jr.
Dominick Thomas, Jr., 63, of Tewksbury Township in Bernardsville died on Tuesday, April 25, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Orange, he had lived in Fanwood for 30 years before relocating to Tewksbury Township five years ago.
Mr. Thomas was a Sales Associate at Weichert Realtors in Bernardsville for two years.
He had previously been employed at Kimberley Clark Corporation Health Care Division in New York for 15 years, retiring in 1998.
He received a degree in business administration from Rider College in Lawrenceville.
Mr. Thomas was a United States Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Ellen Silverman Thomas; two daughters, Pamela Jean Thomas of New York and Hilary Ann Thomas of Boston; a son, Gregory Mathew Thomas of San Francisco; a brother, Joseph Thomas of Pine Beach, and three sisters, Francine Falese of Point Pleasant, Ruth Reed of Florida and Lucy Thomas of Millburn.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, April 29, at the Unitarian Church in Summit.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Gallaway & Crane Home in Basking Ridge.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the individual’s choice.
Sophie Nicholas, 82
Sophie Nicholas, 82, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 16, 2000 at the Genesis ElderCare Center in Westfield.
Born in Manchester, N. H., she had lived in Fort Lee before moving to Westfield in 1987.
Mrs. Nicholas had been employed as an administrative assistant for the United Jersey Bank in Hackensack for 10 years before her retirement in 1985.
She had previously worked for Esquire magazine in New York City.
Surviving are her husband of 55 years, Nick C. Nicholas; two daughters, Gail Ackerman and Stephanie Acquadro, both of Westfield; two brothers, Harry Gagas of Miami, Fla. and Charles Gagas of Cranford, and three grandchildren.
Visitation will take place tonight, Thursday, May 18, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue in Cranford.
The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 19, at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Westfield.
Interment will follow at the George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.
