Howard Henschkel, 90
Howard A. Henschkel, 90, died on Monday, May 15, 2000 at the home of his daughter in Mountainside.
Born in Newark, he had been a longtime resident of Rossmore in Jamesburg before moving to his daughter’s home two years ago.
Mr. Henschkel had been self-employed as the owner of Highway Displays, Inc. in West Orange and Westfield before his retirement.
He won multiple golf championships in Essex County during the 1930s and 1940s and was a member of the Rossmore Golf Club and various organizations at Rossmore.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Viola Henschkel, in 1974 and by his second wife, Glenville Henschkel, in 1999. Surviving is his daughter, Dr. Seena H. Brown.
Graveside funeral services will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 19, at the Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Private arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Virginia Hanke, 90
Virginia Hanke, 90, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, February 22, 2000 at home.
Born in Edwardsville, Ill., she had lived in Orange and Westfield before moving to Scotch Plains 32 years ago.
Mrs. Hanke had been a teacher in Illinois and New Jersey for 25 years before retiring in 1980.
She taught Latin at Union Catholic High School in Scotch Plains and later became the reference librarian for the Cedar Brook School in Plainfield.
She was a member of the New Jersey College Women’s Club and a participant in the New Jersey-based UN of Illinois Graduates Bridge Club.
Mrs. Hanke earned her teaching degree from the University of Illinois and her master’s degree in library science from Newark State Teacher’s College, now Kean University, in Union.
Surviving are her husband, Dr. Albert R. Hanke; two sons, Albert J. Hanke, Jr. and Dr. Dan W. Hanke; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on Friday, May 12, in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Joseph W. McNamara, 76
Editor, Writer for New York Daily News
Joseph William McNamara, 76, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., died on Monday, May 15, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Westfield for 23 years before relocating to New Smyrna Beach.
Mr. McNamara worked for the New York Daily News for almost 40 years, where he was Editor of the Jersey Edition and also wrote the paper’s weekly “Justice Story” column.
A book of Justice Stories will be published in June.
A 1941 graduate of Saint Mary’s High School in Elizabeth, he taught English and Spanish at the school during the late 1940s. He then worked as a reporter for the Denville Herald.
Mr. McNamara had also been employed as an editor and writer at the Journal American in New York City and was City Editor at the Star Ledger in Newark during the 1960s.
He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Seton Hall University in South Orange, where he was Captain of the basketball team. He was known as one of the highest scoring ball players in New Jersey at that time. Mr. McNamara also earned a Master of Arts Degree from New York University in 1948.
He served in the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He was predeceased by a son, Joseph Thomas McNamara, in 1964.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Josephine Hanley McNamara; four daughters, Diane McNamara Irving, Kathleen Deeken, Ellen Ambrose and Virginia Harris, all of the tri-state area; two sons, Patrick McNamara of the tri-state area and Michael McNamara of Fort Pierce, Fla.; three brothers, James McNamara, John McNamara and William McNamara, all of Florida; two sisters, Mary McNamara and Ann Flynn, both of Florida, and 18 grandchildren.
Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, May 18, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
A Mass will be offered at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, May 19, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, with interment to take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Elizabeth.
Vincent Washville, 77
Rotary Leader; Former Guidance Counselor at WHS
Vincent F. Washville, 77, of Toms River died on Sunday, May 7, 2000 in the Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood.
Born in Mount Carmel, Pa., he had lived most of his life in Westfield before moving to Toms River six years ago.
Mr. Washville had been a guidance counselor for 30 years at Westfield High School before retiring 15 years ago.
He was a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.
A fighter pilot, he flew P-38s and 47s and received the Air Medal Award and the Oak Leaf Cluster for bombing and strafing attacks.
Mr. Washville was a Past President of the Rotary Club in Westfield and a member of the Greenbrier Woodlands Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Toms River.
He was a parishioner of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Toms River.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mildred Washville, in 1993.
Surviving is a brother, Albert Brayson of St. James, N.Y.
A Mass was offered Thursday, May 11, at St. Joseph Church, following the funeral Silverton Memorial Funeral Home in Toms River.
Interment took place at Holmdel Cemetery in Holmdel.
Robert Mendoza, 72
Worked for PSE&G; Active in Rotary and Other Organizations
Robert E. Mendoza, 72, of Hilton Head Island, S. C. died on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at the Hilton Head Medical Center and Clinics.
Born on March 16, 1928 in Mexico City, Mexico, he was the son of the late Ernest Mendoza and Thelma Gleason. He had lived in Westfield before moving to Hilton Head Island in 1993.
Mr. Mendoza had been employed by the Public Service Electric and Gas Company in New Jersey for 33 years.
He was a member of the Hilton Head Island Rotary Club, Computer Club, Jazz Society, Dolphin Project and St. Andrew by the Sea United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Ann Fuzzell Mendoza; two sons, Robert L. Mendoza of Tempe, Ariz. and Don G. Mendoza of High Bridge; a daughter, Suzanne Cuomo of Fort Collins, Colo.; a sister, Xech Pettersen of Hilton Head Island, and five grandchildren.
Private services were arranged under the direction of The Island Funeral Home of Hilton Head Island.

Veronica S. Evans, 79
AARP Member; Had Worked as Senior Mortgage Clerk
Veronica S. Evans, 79, of Linden died on Saturday, May 6, 2000 at home.
Born in Roselle Park, she had lived in Scotch Plains and in Clark before moving to Linden 29 years ago.
Mrs. Evans had been a senior mortgage clerk for the United Counties Trust Company in Linden for 12 years before retiring in 1990.
Previously, she had worked for the City Federal Savings Bank in Elizabeth and Hillsborough for 11 years.
She was a member of the Catholic Golden Age of Scotch Plains, the American Association of Retired Persons and the Linden Senior Citizens.
Surviving are a son, Vincent J. Evans; a brother, Vincent Sweeney; a sister, Bernadette Schlicting; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered, Wednesday, May 10, in St. Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home in Westfield.
Joseph Engel, 83
Longtime Attorney; Active With Charitable Foundations
Joseph G. Engel, 83, of Princeton died on May 7, 2000 at Friends Nursing Home in Newton, Pa.
Born on February 13, 1917 in Elizabeth, he had lived in Roselle for 28 years, Cranford for three years and Westfield for 37 years before moving to Princeton 10 years ago.
Mr. Engel began his own law practice in Elizabeth in 1946, which he maintained for more than 40 years before retiring in 1987.
The firm is now known as Engel & Devlin, P.C.
During his career, he also practiced in Watchung and Warren.
Prior to opening his practice, he had worked for the law firm of Hood, Lafferty and Emerson in Newark.
A 1935 graduate of The Pingry School, Mr. Engel received a Bachelor of Arts Degree with honors from Princeton University in 1940.
Graduating from Yale Law School in 1943, he was admitted to the New Jersey Bar Association in 1944 and to the New York Bar Association in 1948.
He was appointed to practice before the United States Supreme Court in 1963.
He was a former Trustee and President of the Union Foundation, the Standish Foundation and the N. R. Leavitt Foundation; a former Trustee of the E. J. Grassmann Trust and Trustee Emeritus of the Hyde and Watson Foundation.
He was a past Trustee and Treasurer of The Pingry School, as well as an Honorary Trustee, and in 1980 received the Letter in Life, the highest award given by the school’s Alumni Association.
The former President of the General Board of Proprietors of Eastern Division of New Jersey, Mr. Engel was a member of the Board of Governors of the New Jersey Historical Society for more than 10 years.
He was a former member of the Executive Committee of the Yale Law School Alumni Association and was a founder and former President of the Legal Aid Society of Union County.
A founder and longtime active member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce of Eastern Union County, he was also a former Trustee of the Union County Bar Association.
He was a member of the Baltusrol Golf Club of Springfield, The Ocean Club of Ocean Ridge, Fla. and The Little Club of Gulfstream, Fla.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Jane Demarest Engel; three sons, William V. Engel of Basking Ridge, Richard F. Engel of West Windsor and Robert J. Engel of Wayland, Mass.; a brother, Edward G. Engel of Hightstown; a sister, Mary E. Flannery of Warren, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment were private.
A memorial service will take place on Sunday, May 21, at 1: 30 p.m. at The Pingry School on Martinsville Road in Bernards Township.
Arrangements were under the direction of the August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
