Sam J. Fredericks
Life Dates: November 17, 1927 - October 3, 2005
Sam J. Fredericks, age 77 of Edison, died on Monday in the Haven Hospice Pavilion at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was born in New York City, NY, and resided in Old Bridge, NJ moving to Edison in 1978.
Mr. Fredericks had been employed as a pressman for the New York Times from 1978 until his retirement in December of 1992. He was a member of the Pressmen’s Union Local #2 in New York City. He was a Conservative Political Activist and worked extensively for the Goldwater and Reagan political campaigns in New Jersey, and played a key role in winning Reagan union support in 1980 and 1984.
He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Iceland protecting US Submarine and Soviet satellite surveillance installations from Communist threat.
He was predeceased by his sister, Rosemary Weyback and his brother, Frederick V. Fredericks.
Survived by: Surviving are his wife of 23˝ years, Mary “Terry” Fredericks, his son, John Fredericks of Roswell, GA, his stepchildren, Cindy Morley of Brick, Kevin Newton of Slidell, LA, Kelly Russell of Bayonne, NJ and Brian Newton of Denham Springs, LA. And eleven 11 grandchildren.

Heinz Bastian
Life Dates: October 5, 1913 - September 18, 2005
Heinz Bastian, age 72 of Edison, died on Sunday at JFK Medical Center in Edison. He was born in Frankfurt, Germany and resided in Keyport for 10 years moving to Fords 7 years ago.
Mr. Bastian was a Supervisor for Oxford ATS at Newark Airport.
He was predeceased by his wife, Carol Dascenzo Bastian who died in 2002.
Survived by: Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Christine Bastian of Edison and his granddaughters, Ashley and Amanda.

Ramona Torres
Life Dates: October 5, 1928 - August 22, 2005
Ramona Torres, age 76 of Perth Amboy, died on Monday at her daughter’s home. She was born in Puerto Rico and had resided in Perth Amboy for the last 48 years.
Mrs. Torres was a seamstress for Schott Brothers in Perth Amboy.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fermin Torres Mendez who died in 1997, her brother, Evaristo Perez and her sister, Juanita Irizarry.
Survived by: Surviving are her daughters, Nilsa Ramirez of Perth Amboy and Virginia Rodriguez of Perth Amboy, her brother, Tomas Colon of Puerto Rico and her sister, Tolla Perez of Puerto Rico. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Edwin Ruiz, Elvin Ruiz, Marisel Ruiz Nilsa E. Cavill and Mellissa Martinez and her great-grandchildren, J.R. Ruiz, Evan Ruiz, Amber Ruiz, Ashley Ruiz, E-Jay Ruiz, Danny Cavill, Eric Cavill and Justin Gaunt.

Mary Pat Brew Sturdy
Life Dates: February 11, 1959 - August 10, 2005
Mary Pat Brew Sturdy, age 46 of Newton, died on Wednesday at Newton Memorial Hospital. She was born in Brooklyn, NY, grew up in Fords and resided in Montville before moving to Newton 1 year ago.
Mary Pat graduated from Adelphi University in New York and was a Senior Executive and Corporate Secretary with the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for 21 years retiring in 2000. She was a communicant of St Joseph’s RC Church in Newton and an officer in the Karen Ann Quinlan Foundation.
She was predeceased by her fiancé and love of her life, James A. Romito, Chief of the Port Authority Police Department who died in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, her parents, John G. and Mary A. Cassidy Brew and her sister-in-law, Wendy A. Brew who died in 2004.
Survived by: Surviving are her son, Robert E. Sturdy of Newton, and her brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Mary Ellen Brew of Seattle, WA, Paul T. Brew of Mt. Bethel, PA, Gerard G. and Phyllis Brew of Allendale and George T. and Tricia Brew of Fords. Also surviving are her nephews, Brian, John Paul, Gregory, and Thomas.

Mary “Miss Mary” Stankewicz
Life Dates: February 12, 1928 - August 9, 2005
Mary Pinelli Stankewicz, age 77, died on Tuesday at her home in Hopelawn. Affectionately known by everyone as “Miss Mary”, she was a life long resident of Hopelawn, a loving wife and a devoted mother who was treasured by her family. Graduating from Woodbridge High School in 1945, she was employed at the Raritan Arsenal during the last year of World War II. After the war, she was employed as a lab worker at Catalin Corporation in Fords for 2½ years.
During the summer months of 1956-1960, she served as the playground director of Hopelawn playground. “Miss Mary” volunteered her services as an assistant to the librarian at the free public library of Hopelawn from 1960-1964. Upon the retirement of the librarian, “Miss Mary” served as branch head of the Hopelawn Branch for 29 years. “Miss Mary” shared her love of books and reading and her talents as a poet and storyteller. She wrote and directed numerous puppet shows for the enjoyment of the children. Her unique arts and crafts projects also provided many happy hours for children of all ages.
Upon her retirement from the Hopelawn Library in 1994, “Miss Mary” wrote a thank you letter to the former mayor of Woodbridge, James McGreevey, in which she expressed that “the time spent working for Woodbridge Township was special and a privilege for it gave me the opportunity to provide service and friendship to those I deeply love, the children and grown-ups of my community and Woodbridge Township”. “ Miss Mary” was predeceased by her parents, Christina and Leonard Pinelli of Hopelawn, five brothers, Peter, Nunzie, Carmine (Philip), Mario, Nicholas and one sister Ann Ruffo, all of Hopelawn.
Survived by: Surviving are her loving husband of 57 years, Stephen, her loving and devoted daughter, Mary of Hopelawn, her loving son and daughter-in-law, William and Toni of Nazareth, PA, her loving niece Melissa White and her husband Chris of Jermyn, PA, her loving nephew Peter Pinelli Jr., of Dunmore, PA and other cousins, nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her dear friends, Joanna and Bill Patterson of New Zealand, Annette Levin of California, Ilona and Vilnis Norins of Tacoma, WA, the Giffen Family of Englishtown, Susan Sona of Freehold, Katie Packer of Dalton, PA, Patricia and Robert Angley of Hopelawn, the Rudders Family of Hopelawn and Tekla Farina of Colonia. “Miss Mary” also was blessed to receive the loving care and friendship of Sister Lucy and Sister Maria of St. Joseph’s Convent during her illness. She will be missed by Sweetie Pie, the cherished family cat.

Herminia L. Soto
Life Dates: December 26, 1929 - August 16, 2005
Herminia L. Soto, age 75, died on Tuesday at her home in Perth Amboy. She was born in Utuada, Puerto Rico and had resided in Perth Amboy for more than 50 years.
Mrs. Soto was an employee at Raritan Sportswear in Perth Amboy for 14 years retiring in 1980. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima RC Church in Perth Amboy.
Survived by: Surviving are her husband of 52 years, Marcelo, her sons and daughters-in-law, Ivan and Esther of Manalapan and Edgar and Simone of Perth Amboy, her sisters, Gloria Rios of Puerto Rico and Amelia Morales of Trenton and five grandchildren.

Joseph P. Smoyak
Life Dates: May 7, 1925 - August 17, 2005
Joseph P. Smoyak, age 80, died on Wednesday at his home in Fords. He was born in Keasbey, NJ and had resided his entire life in Fords.
Mr. Smoyak was a Repairman for 40 years with the Ford Motor Company in Edison before retiring in 1988. He was a Life Member of the Fords Fire Company and former Fire Chief, and was a member of the United Exempt Firemen’s Association of Fords, Keasbey and Hopelawn. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Perth Amboy, and a former member of the United Auto Workers Union in Edison. He served in the US Maritime Service Merchant Marines.
He was the husband of the late Helen Smoyak who died in 1999, and the brother of the late John Smoyak.
Survived by: Surviving are his son, Ronald Smoyak of Fords, his brother, Alex Smoyak of Edison, his half- brother, Edward Szucs of Avenel and his sister, Anna Kuderick of Matawan. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
Visitation: Friday, August 19, 2005 2:00-4:00 & 7:00-9:00 p.m.
