C. WALTON "WALT" MOORE, 89, of Little Silver died Sept. 14 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick. He was a lifelong Little Silver resident. He was employed by J.H. Kelly Co., Red Bank, for 33 years, retiring in 1982. An avid gardener, he was employed by Sickles Farm Market, Little Silver, during his teen-age years. He was named grand marshal of the Little Silver 75th Anniversary parade. He was predeceased by two sisters, Harriet Moore and Mildred Moore. He is survived by his wife of 63 yeas, Elizabeth "Betty" Moore of Little Silver; his son, Larry Moore of Little Silver; his brother-in-law, Warren Minton; and several nieces; nephews; grandnieces; and grandnephews. JOHN J. McGAVIN, 60, of Middletown died Sept. 20 at home. Born in Hoboken, he moved to Middletown in 1964. He was a computer technology teacher for Thompson Middle School, Middletown, for 23 years. Prior to that, he taught, and was a basketball coach, at Bayshore Middle School, Middletown, for 12 years. He was a member of the New Jersey and the National Education Associations. He was predeceased by his brother Patrick McGavin in 1964. He is survived by his wife of eight years, Carol Henry McGavin of Middletown; two sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Tracy McGavin of Highlands, and Scott and Teddy McGavin of Keyport; two daughters and one son-in-law, Kelly and Scott Klemroth of San Diego, Calif., and Megan Becker of Fort Monroe, Va.; his brother and sister-in-law, Joseph and Betty McGavin of Denville; his sister and brother-in-law, Maureen and Richard Vensel of Scottsdale, Ariz.; one granddaughter; and his former wife, Sandra Connor McGavin of Rumson. LAWRENCE S. PIPARO, 68, of Shrewsbury, died Oct. 10 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Jersey City, he resided in Shrewsbury for the past 23 years. He was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, retiring as a staff sergeant after 20 years of military service. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans No. 29, Fort Monmouth. He was a graduate of Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, as well as the Eastern School of Musical Instrument Repair. He was predeceased by his infant son, Mark Piparo. He is survived by his wife, Lynne S. Quackenbush Piparo; his daughter, Suzette Piparo; his son, Richard Kang; and two grandchildren. A funeral Mass was celebrated at St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown.
WILLIAM P. BURNSIDE, 64, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., died Sept. 26 at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center, Myrtle Beach. Born in Red Bank, he resided in Toms River prior to moving to Myrtle Beach four years ago. He was a driver for Coca Cola, Asbury Park, for 35 years, retiring in 1991. He served in the U.S. Army during peacetime. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Julie McCormick Burnside of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; four daughters, Trisha Darnell of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Susan Dooley of Monmouth Beach, Tina Sanchirieo of Bricktown, and Donna Donaldson of San Antonio, Texas; two sons, Raymond Martin of Lincoln, Neb., and Bruce Martin of Elkton, Md.; his brother, Alex Burnside of Georgia; and 23 grandchildren. ANTHONY "TONY" TORCHIA, 46, of Oceanport died Sept. 26 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Miglierina, Italy, he lived in Long Branch and Vermont prior to moving to Oceanport. He was the chief director of water and waste utilities in Windsor, Vt., for six years. Prior to that, he was employed by the Long Branch Sewerage Authority. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. He was the recipient of several awards of excellence in the field of environmental work. He was predeceased by his father, Michelangelo Torchia in 1979. He is survived by his mother, Maria Esposito Torchia of Oceanport; his brother and sister-in-law, Pasquale and Eileen Torchia; his fiancée Jamie Gettis; his niece and nephew; and two stepdaughters. A funeral Mass was offered at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church.
JOSEPH M. "MICKEY" STAVOLA, 58, of Middletown died Oct. 1. Born in Middletown, he was a lifelong resident. He was the president, CEO, and co-owner with his brother of Trap Rock Industries Inc., Kingston section of Franklin Township. He was also co-owner with his brother and sisters of Dixie Lime & Stone, Florida. He operated M.J. Stavola Farms, Middletown, a thoroughbred breeding and cattle producing entity; and co-owned Driftwood Cabana Club, Sea Bright. An avid hunter, he was a member of the National Rifle Association and his other memberships included the N.J. Federation of Sportsmen's Club, and the United Bowhunters of New Jersey. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Garden State Deer Classic, and co-owned with his brother, a NASCAR Winston Cup race team that won the Daytona 500 in 1988. He is survived by his wife, Carol Hilbert Stavola of Middletown; five sons and three daughters-in-law, Michael J. and Andrea R. Stavola, Robert J. Stavola, William F. and Jennifer L. Stavola, Jesse D. and Jennifer A. Stavola, and Joseph M. Stavola Jr.; his daughter, Sharone M. Stavola; his brother and sister-in-law William H. and Maureen F. STANLEY E. "MONK" RICHARDS, 70, of Eatontown, died Oct. 6 at home. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of Eatontown. He was a security guard and fireman at Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport. Prior to that, he was a carpenter for Joseph L. Muscarella Construction, Maywood. He was a communicant of St. Dorothea's Roman Catholic Church, Eatontown. He served for 55 years with the Eatontown Fire Company, as well as the Eatontown First Aid Squad. While on the squad, he suffered severe burns to his eyes when saving the life of an individual involved in a train-truck accident. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 2250, Red Bank; the Benevolent and Protected Order of Elks No. 2402, Eatontown; and was an assistant Scoutmaster of Troop No. 52, Eatontown. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Margaret "Peggy" A. Bennett Richards; his son and daughter-in-law, Dane and Christine of Eatontown; his brother and sister-in-law, George and Lillian Richards of Hatch, N.M.; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. RANDOLPH "RANDY" G. MACALUSO SR., 51, of Long Branch, died Oct. 7 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. He was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. He was the meat department manager at ShopRite, West Long Branch, for 30 years. He was a parishioner of Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. His memberships included the Amalgamated Meat Cutter & Butcher Workmen Local No. 464; BASS; New Jersey Bass Federation; and the Bass Kickers Fishing Team. He was predeceased by his father, Peter A. Macaluso Sr., in 1996. He is survived by his wife, Susan Carr Macaluso of Long Branch; two sons, Randy G. Jr. of Red Bank, and Christopher P. of Brick; his mother, Philomena "Fannie" Melillo Macaluso of Eatontown; his sister, Laurie Macaluso-Stuerken of Monmouth Beach; two brothers, Peter A. MICHAEL R. HAYES, 66, of Vero Beach, Fla., and Monmouth Beach died Sept. 21 in Monmouth Beach. Born in Madison, Wis., he lived in Vero Beach since 1995. He was the president of Johnson & Johnson Sales and Logistics Co., retiring in 1995 after 40 years. Prior to that he was president of its personal products company. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Church, Rumson; and Holy Cross Church, Vero Beach. His club memberships included the Notre Dame Club of Greater Vero Beach and John's Island Club, also Vero Beach. He was predeceased by his wife, Phyllis Kennedy Hayes in 1980. He is survived by three sons, John and Charles Hayes, both of Fair Haven, and Hugh Hayes of Hoboken; three brothers, John Hayes of Racine, Wis., James Hayes of Green Bay, Wis., and Hugh Hayes of Madison, Wis.; his sister, Mary Tomlinson of Des Moines, Iowa; and five grandchildren.
