Miriam Russell, 103
Miriam Edith Towl Russell, 103, died on Monday, March 13, 2000 at the home of her daughter, Letty Russell, in Guilford, Conn.
Born in Cranford, she had lived in Westfield until moving to Guilford 11 years ago.
Mrs. Russell was President of the District Nursing Association of Westfield and an Elder and President of the Church Women’s Association of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Also surviving are two other daughters, Jean Berry of Lakewood and Elizabeth Collins of Salem, Ore.; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, February 16, at the First Congregational Church of Guilford. Burial will be private.
Arrangements are under the direction of the West Haven Funeral Home at the Green in West Haven, Conn.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Refugee Resettlement Fund of the First Congregational Church of Guilford, 122 Broad Street, Guilford, Conn. 06437.
Eileen Shjarback, 72
Eileen M. Shjarback, 72, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, March 12, 2000 at the McCarrick Care Center in Somerset.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived there before moving to Scotch Plains in 1967.
Mrs. Shjarback had worked as a secretary for the Mountainside office of the Internal Revenue Service for eight years before retiring in 1987.
She was formerly employed by Tepper’s Department Store in Plainfield and as Assistant to the Administrator at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, C. Roger Shjarback, and by a daughter, Kathleen Shjarback.
Surviving are three sons, C. Roger Shjarback, Jr., Thomas G. Shjarback and Dennis A. Shjarback; a brother, James O’Sullivan; a sister, Joan Vafacos, and four grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains today, Thursday, March 16, at 10 a.m.
Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains. There will be no calling hours at the funeral home.
Arrangements are being handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

John J. Fitzpatrick, 84
John J. Fitzpatrick, 84, of Westfield died on Friday, March 10, 2000 at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network in Westfield.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Roselle Park before moving to Westfield 34 years ago.
Mr. Fitzpatrick had been employed by the Roselle Park school system for many years before retiring in 1980.
Surviving are a nephew, Frank Fitzpatrick, and three nieces, Jean Silk, Pat Bach and Janet Maragni.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, March 17, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment will follow in St. Gertrude’s Roman Catholic Cemetery in Colonia.

Edna Alexander
Edna Perkins Alexander, a former Westfield resident, died on Friday, March 10, 2000 at her home in Manhattan.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Westfield from 1914 to 1955, when she moved to New York City.
Mrs. Alexander was educated through the Westfield school system and was a member of the First Congregational Church of Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, John H. Alexander, in 1987, and by a daughter, Anne A. Scott, in 1985.
Surviving are a son, John H. Alexander, Jr. of Millis, Mass.; a daughter, Judith A. St. George of Old Lyme, Conn.; a sister, Nellie P. Hastings of Hackettstown; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
There will be no visitation. A graveside funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. today, Thursday, March 16, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Frank J. Thiel, 69
Honored Realtor; Former Board of Adjustment Member
Frank J. Thiel, 69, of Mountainside died on Thursday, April 27, 2000 at home.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Fanwood for eight years before moving to Mountainside more than 25 years ago.
Mr. Thiel and his wife, Betty, opened the Thiel Agency, a real estate company, on Route 22 in Mountainside in 1969. They subsequently opened a branch office in Basking Ridge in 1972.
After the couple merged their agency with Burgdorff Realtors in 1991, Mr. Thiel continued working as a Realtor and broker with the Burgdorff Westfield office.
Earlier, he had been a salesman and office manager with the Alan Johnson Agency from 1964 through 1969.
Mr. Thiel graduated in 1959 from Rutgers University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration and Marketing. He obtained his real estate broker’s license in 1963.
He served on the Westfield Board of Realtors as Second Vice President, First Vice President and later as President.
In addition, he was a member of the board’s educational committee, bylaws committee, ethics committee, arbitration committee and Mayor’s advisory committees.
In 1975, Mr. Thiel received the board’s Realtor Community Service Awa r d.
He was Director of the New Jersey Association of Realtors from 1975 through 1978 and was a member of the National Association of Realtors.
He served on the Mountainside Board of Adjustment for five years in the 1970s.
Mr. Thiel was the 1979 Chairman of the Mountainside United Fund.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and was a charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10136 in Mountainside, where he served as Post Commander in 1973.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two sons, Bruce Thiel of San Diego, Calif. and Greg Thiel of Phillipsburg; a sister, Dorothy Dolan of Bricktown, and four grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy was offered on Monday, May 1, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church. Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Henry A. Daas, 81
Henry A. Daas, 81, of Mountainside died on Sunday, April 23, 2000 in Englewood Hospital.
Born in Brooklyn, he moved to Mountainside 41 years ago.
Mr. Daas had been employed as a chemical engineer with the Foster Wheeler Corporation in Livingston for 26 years before retiring in 1986.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Brooklyn Poly Technical Institute in 1939.
Mr. Daas served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was a member of the American Legion, the Mountainside Seniors and the Mountainside Active Retirees.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Gloria Daas; a son, Henry A. Daas, Jr.; a daughter, Helen Raczkowski; three sisters, Edna Daas, Selma Daas and Helen Daas, and four grandchildren.
Services were held on Thursday, April 27, in the Community Presbyterian Church of Mountainside.

Robert R. Reilly
Longtime President Of Westfield Oldsmobile Dealership
Robert R. Reilly of Westfield died on Sunday, April 30, at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Roselle before moving to Westfield in 1946.
Mr. Reilly served as President and Chairman of the Board of Reilly Oldsmobile in Westfield since 1955.
He was an active member of the New Jersey Coalition of Automotive Retailers (NJ CAR), the trade association representing the state’s 680 franchised automobile and truck dealerships, for nearly 40 years.
He filled each of the senior officer positions within the organization prior to becoming Chairman in 1969.
Mr. Reilly was elected as the New Jersey winner of the Time Magazine Quality Dealer Award (TMQDA) in tribute to his commitment and success in running the automobile dealership and for his support of numerous charitable and civic organizations.
He subsequently served on the TMQDA Nominating Committee from 1983 until his death.
He was a Director of NJ CAR’s Committee of Automotive Retailers Political Action Committee from 1979 to 1998. He served as President of the organization from 1987 to 1990.
He served on NJ CAR’s Strategic and Long Range Planning Committee since 1989 and was a member of the organization’s Operations and Nominating Committee since 1970.
Mr. Reilly was a past member of the Board of Directors of Lincoln Federal Savings and Loan.
He was elected to the Children’s Specialized Hospital board in 1972 and served as Chairman of the Personnel Committee and as First Vice Chairman of the board and a member of the Executive Committee through 1980.
Elected as a member of the Founding Board of the Children’s Specialized Hospital Foundation in 1986, he served through 1993 and was then elected Trustee Emeritus of the board.
He and his friend Edward Kammler were the founding members of the 200 Club of Union County, which recognizes the efforts of uniformed police, firefighters and state troopers. Mr. Reilly was a Past President of the club and an active member and Trustee.
He received a special tribute award from the club for his many years of support and time given to the organization.
He was a longtime member and Past President of the Westfield Lions Club.
Mr. Reilly served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II, from 1941 to 1945.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Ann Christensen; a son, Andrew R. Reilly of Wayside; a daughter, Robin D. Newman of Charlottesville, Va.; a sister, Gene Benson of Lutherville, Md., and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was held at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood on Friday, May 5. Interment was private.
