Self-Employed Artist; Set Designer for Local Acting Group
Birgitte Jaffe, 61, of Mountainside died on Wednesday, July 5, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Copenhagen, she had lived in New York City and Elizabeth before moving to Mountainside 33 years ago.
Mrs. Jaffe was a self-employed artist who had worked with pastels and watercolors.
She graduated from the Artist Institute for Women in Copenhagen in 1959.
She was a member of the New Jersey Center for Visual Arts in Summit and of the Morris County Art Association.
Mrs. Jaffe was also a set designer with the Mountainside Players acting group.
Surviving are her husband of 40 years, Robert H. Jaffe; three sons, Barron L. Jaffe and Erik M. Jaffe, both of Maplewood, and Peter S. Jaffe of Philadelphia; a daughter, Charlotte E. Jaffe of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Beret Holst Peterson and Elisabet Holst Wentzel, and a brother, Anders Holst.
A service was held on Friday, July 7, in the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

Anne L. Merlo, 87
Was Superintendent Of Fanwood Presbyterian Sunday School
Anne L. Merlo, 87, of Glendale, Ariz. died on Monday, July 3, 2000 at home.
Born in Dothan, Ala., she had lived in Fanwood for most of her life before relocating to Glendale 11 years ago.
Mrs. Merlo had been a manager with the former E.J. Korvette’s department store in Watchung, where she worked for 15 years before retiring in 1978.
She was a former Superintendent at the Sunday School of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Janet Vittori and Joyce Kenae; a son, John Merlo; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, July 10, in the Willow Grove Presbyterian Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Richard J. Kolesar, 59
Richard J. Kolesar, 59, of Fanwood died on Friday, July 7, 2000 at home.
Born in Pringle, Pa., he was a resident of Fanwood for most of his life.
Mr. Kolesar was a manufacturing supervisor with Tecknic Company in Cranford, where he worked for 38 years.
He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War and was a member and ex-Commander of American Legion Post No. 209 of Scotch Plains.
Surviving are a sister, Barbara Holmes, and a brother, Joseph Kolesar.
A Mass was offered on Monday, July 10, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
The funeral was held from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Interment took place at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fanwood Volunteer Rescue Squad, Watson Road, Fanwood, 07023, or to Haven Hospice, JFK Medical Center, 65 James Street, P. O. Box 3059, Edison, 08818.

Francis Edmondson, 89
Church Usher; Member of Local Knights of Columbus
Francis M. Edmondson, 89, of Westfield died on Saturday, July 8, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Jersey City, he lived in Westfield since 1946.
Mr. Edmondson had been employed at Western Electric in Kearny for 32 years before retiring as a supervisor.
He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club of America.
He served as an usher for many years at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield and was a member of Monsignor Henry Watterson Council No. 1711 of the Knights of Columbus, also in Westfield.
He was predeceased by his wife, Harriet E. Gates Edmondson.
Surviving are two sons, James E. Edmondson and Francis M. Edmondson, Jr.; eight grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday, July 11, in the Holy Trinity Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson Street, Westfield, 07090.

John Lubischer, 74
Was Paratrooper; Received Purple Heart and Bronze Star
John N. Lubischer, 74, of Manchester died on Sunday, July 9, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in and Greenbriar in Brick before moving to Manchester a year ago.
Mr. Lubischer had been a driver and superintendent of delivery for The Star-Ledger in Newark for many years before retiring in 1983.
He was a member of the Newspaper Mailers Delivery Union in Newark.
Mr. Lubischer, who served as a United States Army paratrooper during World War II, received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star.
Surviving are a son, Ricky Lubischer; two daughters, Donna Papariello and Ingrid Bergen; five brothers, George Lubischer, Robert Lubischer, Tony Lubischer, Ron Lubischer and Bill Lubischer; two sisters, Geraldine Frantangalo and Darlene Barbella, and five grandchildren.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, July 12, in St. Martha’s Roman Catholic Church in Point Pleasant, following the funeral from the Timothy E. Ryan Home for Funerals in Toms River.

James Mitchell, 89
Bank Executive; Was Former Westfield Councilman
James P. Mitchell, 89, a former Westfield resident, died on Friday, June 30, 2000 at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge.
Born in New York City on September 29, 1910, the son of Scottish immigrants, he had lived in Westfield from 1947 to 1997.
Mr. Mitchell had worked for Chase Manhattan Bank in New York City from 1929 to 1975.
A graduate of the American Banking Institute in New York City, he became what was then the youngest person ever to be promoted to Vice President at Chase Manhattan in 1950.
He eventually became the executive responsible for the bank’s Aerospace Division and often testified before Congress on such issues as airline subsidies and supersonic transport.
Mr. Mitchell served as a Westfield Town Councilman for six years during the 1950s and was a Trustee of The Pingry School, now in Martinsville, from 1966 to 1970.
He was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield for 46 years, where he served as an Elder and Trustee.
Earlier, he had been a member of The Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City for 28 years, serving as a Trustee and Elder there as well.
He was a graduate of New York University, where he majored in the classics.
Mr. Mitchell was a member of the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield for over 50 years and was also a member of the Raritan Yacht Club and the Northern Lake George Yacht Club.
He was predeceased by his wife of 39 years, Virginia Bulkeley Mitchell, in 1978.
Surviving are his second wife, Jane Hume Mitchell; two daughters, Virginia Mitchell Dimsey of New York City and Wilmington, Del. and Ann Mitchell Thompson of Mt. Pleasant, S. C.; two sons, Tocher Mitchell of Shelburne, Vt. and Peter Bulkeley Mitchell of Silver Bay, N.Y., and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Monday, July 10, at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge.
Memorial donations may be made to either The Silver Bay Association, Silver Bay, N.Y., 12874 or to the Adirondack Nature Conservancy, P. O. Box 65, Keene Valley, N.Y., 12943.

Frank Uhrin, Sr., 75
Decorated Veteran; Played Alto Sax in Band for Over 40 Years
Frank J. Uhrin, Sr., 75, of Westfield died on Sunday, July 9, 2000 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Hillside before moving to Westfield 49 years ago.
Mr. Uhrin had been Director of Office Services at Bristol-Myers-Squibb Corporation in Hillside for 45 years before his retirement 12 years ago.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Normandy Invasion and the Battle of St. Lo, where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart.
Mr. Uhrin played alto sax in the Jonnie Jay Band for more than 40 years.
He was a member of American Legion Post No. 3 in Westfield and belonged to Musicians Local No. 151 of Elizabeth.
Surviving are his wife, Helen Uhrin; a son, Frank Uhrin, Jr.; two daughters, Lynda Jackey and Janet Westerman; a brother, John Uhrin; a sister, Helen Shuback, and seven grandchildren.
A Mass will be offered at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, July 13, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
The funeral will be at 9 a.m. from the Krowicki Gorny Memorial Home in Clark.

Donna Dow, 52
Was Member of Clubs At Redeemer Lutheran, Mother’s Club
Donna Dow, 52, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, July 8, 2000 in the Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge division.
Born in Washington, D. C., she was raised in Falls Church, Va. and had lived in Columbia, Md. before moving to Scotch Plains 18 years ago.
Mrs. Dow earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Kean University in Union in 1988.
She was a member of the Bible Study Group and the Stewardship Committee, both of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield, and had been President of the St. Joseph’s High School Mothers Club of Metuchen.
Surviving are a daughter, Tamara D. Bove; two sons, Michael Richard Dow, Sr. and Gerald Keith Dow, Jr.; her parents, Russell E. and Frances Tate; a sister, Shirley Tate Rucker; a brother, Russell E. Tate, Jr., and two grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, July 10, in the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
