Carolyn Thorpe, 91
Was Parishioner And Altar Guild Member at St. Paul’s
Carolyn Roeder Thorpe, 91, of Easton, Md., died on Tuesday, December 21, 1999 at the William Hill Manor in Easton.
Born in Bethlehem, Pa. on April 26, 1908, she was the daughter of the late Charles Henry and Minnie Mohr Roeder.
She had lived in Westfield for many years before moving to Easton in 1998.
She graduated from the Moravian Preparatory School in Bethlehem and from Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa.
Mrs. Thorpe was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield and of the church’s Altar Guild.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gardner Belknap Thorpe, in December of 1979. The couple was married in September of 1929.
Surviving are two daughters, Carol T. Patterson of Oxford, Md. and Barbara T. Davis of Conover, Wis.; six grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Private services were arranged under the direction of the Fellows, Helfenbein and Newnam Funeral Home in Easton.

Raffaella Vitale, 67
Raffaella Vitale, 67, of Spring Hill, Fla. died on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 in the Spring Hill Regional Hospital.
Born in Foggia, Italy, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Spring Hill five years ago.
Mrs. Vitale was a member of the New Jersey Club and the YMCA of Spring Hill.
Surviving are her husband, Salvatore Vitale; a daughter, Catherine Nasti; three sons, Gerald Vitale, Andrew Vitale and Frank Vitale; a sister, Antoinette DeErrico, and eight grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by the Brewer Memorial Funeral Home in Spring Hill.
Angelo M. Scala, 82
Angelo Michael Scala, 82, of Lake Worth, Fla. died on Tuesday, December 7, 1999 at home.
Born in Westfield, he had lived in Branchburg for 23 years before moving to Lake Worth in 1986.
Mr. Scala had been the owner of Tina’s Motel and Trailer Court in Branchburg for 23 years before retiring in 1986.
He served as a machinist mate in the United States Navy during World War II.
Mr. Scala was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1388 in Bound Brook and of the Lacuna Golf and Country Club in Lake Worth.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Mary Scala; two sons, Michael Scala and James Scala; two daughters, Karen Holota and Marcia Scala Mindigo; two sisters, Tillie Fiorino and Tina Moretti; a brother, Eugene Scala, and six grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was held in Lake Worth.
Arrangements were handled by the All County Funeral Home in Lake Worth.
Rita Martz Miller, 65
Rita Martz Miller, 65, of Bridgewater died on Wednesday, December 22, 1999 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Pottsville, Pa., she had lived in Roselle before moving to Bridgewater 35 years ago.
Mrs. Miller was a legal secretary for Beneficial Management Corporation in Peapack for 15 years.
Surviving are her husband of 42 years, George C. Miller, Jr.; two sons, George C. Miller, 3rd, of Boston and Gary M. Miller of Bridgewater; a daughter, Dena Deretchin of Hillsborough; a brother, Gus Martz of Manville; a sister, Roxy Hauptly of Fanwood, and three grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, December 26, at the Bridgewater Funeral Home in Bridgewater.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Fred Steinberger
Retired Manager; Was Leader in Knights of Pythias
Fred Steinberger of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, December 23, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Elizabeth before moving to Scotch Plains five years ago.
Mr. Steinberger had been the manager of A to Z Products in Fords for more than 20 years before retiring in 1996.
He was the Past Chancellor-Commander of the Knights of Pythias Essex Eureka Lodge No. 158 in Maplewood and was active with the Dokkie Higera Fraternal Organization in Nutley.
Surviving are his wife, Vera Steinberger, and a brother, Emery Steinberger.
Services were held on Friday, December 24, at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Loretta DeFilippis, 78
Parishioner; Owned Ceramics Shop in Scotch Plains
Loretta Magnanti DeFilippis, 78, of Toms River died on Friday, December 24, 1999 in the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.
Born and raised in Newark, she had lived in Union, Scotch Plains, Millersville, Md., and Fanwood before moving to Toms River five years ago.
Mrs. DeFilippis owned and operated Loretta’s, a ceramics shop in Scotch Plains, for over 25 years.
She was an officer with the International Ceramics Association and the National Ceramics Association.
Mrs. DeFilippis was a member of the Calvary Assembly of God in West Long Branch.
She was predeceased by her husband, Liber DeFilippis, in 1986; a son, Albert DeFilippis, in 1989, and a grandson, Jimmy Schelhorn, in 1989.
Surviving are two sons, Carmine J. DeFilippis of Campbell Hall, N.Y. and Leigh DeFilippis of Annandale; two daughters, Elena Burd of Bedminster and Carolyn Schelhorn of Berkeley Heights; two sisters, Frances Mullin of Toms River and Antoinette Garruto of Union; 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, December 29, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.
Interment took place at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge.
Thomas J. Carey, 68
Worked in Finance; Played in Yankees’ Minor League Program
Thomas J. Carey, 68, of Summit died on Saturday, December 25, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in New York City, he had lived in Maplewood from 1970 to 1979, when he relocated to Summit.
Mr. Carey had been employed during the 1970s as a financial analyst for Manufacturers Hanover in New York City.
He later worked for 15 years as a financial advisor for Overlook Hospital before retiring in 1993.
He also served as a volunteer with the hospital for many years.
He served with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.
During the early 1950s, Mr. Carey played in the New York Yankees minor league system.
He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business from Georgetown University in 1960 and earned his Master of Business Administration Degree in Management from Saint John’s University in 1975.
Surviving are three daughters, Patricia Fitzpatrick and Mary Ann Keenan, both of Westfield, and Christine Plummer of Succasunna; a son, Thomas C. Carey of Charlotte, N.C., and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held yesterday, Wednesday, December 29, in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Holy Trinity Interparochial School, 336 First Street, Westfield, 07090.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Marie C. Kirsch, 92
Marie Cecilia Kirsch, 92, of Westfield died on Saturday, December 25, 1999.
Born on May 21, 1907 in Brooklyn, the daughter of Mary and John J. McNally, she had lived in Westfield for more than 20 years.
Mrs. Kirsch had been employed for than 20 years as an operator with AT&T in lower Manhattan.
She was a longtime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, E. J. Hall Chapter in Manhattan and of the AT&T Glee Club.
She was a communicant of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
She was predeceased by two husbands, Joseph M. Vetter and John G. “Doc” Kirsch; two brothers, John and George McNally, and by a sister, Katherine Stamm.
Surviving are a son, Joseph G. Vetter of Maspeth, N.Y.; three daughters, Patricia Diemer of Mountainside, Mary Oestreicher of Kingwood, Tex. and Jeanne Finken of Clifton Park, N.Y.; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered yesterday, Wednesday, December 29, in St. Helen’s Church. Interment took place at St. John’s Cemetery in Queens.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
