Helen McCarthy, 78, of Brick died on Friday, February 5, 1999 in the Point Pleasant Hospital.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Brick 14 years ago.
Mrs. McCarthy had worked in marketing at the Schering-Plough Corporation in Kenilworth for 10 years prior to retiring 15 years ago.
Surviving are her husband, Thomas McCarthy; a son, Gary McCarthy, a daughter, Florence Cooper, and four grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, February 8, in St. Martha’s Church in Point Pleasant.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Weatherhead Young Funeral Home in Brick.
Irene Wojciehowski, 72
Irene F. Wojciehowski, 72, of Toms River died on Friday, February 5, 1999 at the Community Medical Center in Toms River.
Born in Somerville, she had lived in Finderne, Manville and Somerville before moving to Toms River in 1972.
Mrs. Wojciehowski was a secretary at American Cyanamid in Bridgewater for 12 years.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Toms River, where she was a member of its Altar Rosary Society.
She served as a Eucharistic minister at the church and at Community Medical Center in Toms River.
She was a member of the Polish-Americans Club in Toms River and was a former member of the Altar Rosary Society at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Somerville and St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Bound Brook.
Surviving are her husband, Stanley Wojciehowski; two daughters, Kathleen Foley of Somerville and Claire Ann Roszak of Toms River; two sons, Michael Wojciehowski of Medford Lakes and Stephen Wojciehowski of Manahawkin; three brothers, Anthony Ziolkowski of Bridgewater, Theordore Ziolkowski of Scotch Plains and John Ziolkowski of Somerset; 11 grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.
A Mass was held on Tuesday, February 9, at St. Joseph’s Church in Toms River.
Arrangements were handled by the Carmona-Bolen Home for Funerals in Toms River.
Richard Guenther, Jr., 87
Was Engineer At Exxon In Florham Park For 40 Years
Richard Guenther, Jr., 87, of Basking Ridge died on Friday, February 5, 1999 in Morristown Memorial Hospital.
Born in the Bronx, he had lived Fanwood before moving to Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge three years ago.
Mr. Guenther had received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from New York University.
He was a chemical engineer with Exxon for 40 years before retiring from the Florham Park office in 1976.
He was a member of the Exxon Annuitants Club.
Mr. Guenther was also a member of the Fanwood Presbyterian Church in Fanwood.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Edith Guenther, in 1961; his second wife, June Guenther; and his third wife, Lucille Guenther in 1994.
Surviving are two daughters, Laurie Guenther of Warrington, Pennsylvania and Carol Petz of Cranford; a son, Richard W. Guenther, of Chalfont, Pennsylvania; a sister, Amalie Griffith of Chestertown, Maryland; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was held on Monday, February 8, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
Interment was held at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Doris O’Brien Kennek, 70
Was Employee In Sears Customer Service Department
Doris O’Brien Kennek, 70, of Readington died on Friday, February 5, 1999 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Arlington, Virginia, she had lived in Scotch Plains for 10 years before moving to Readington 15 years ago.
Mrs. Kennek worked in the customer service department at Sears in Watchung for 10 years prior to retiring in 1983.
She was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church in Three Bridges, where she served as a Eucharistic minister and sacristan as well as a member of the Women’s Guild.
Surviving are her husband, James F. Kennek; a son, James M. Kennek of Oxford; a daughter, Anne Marie Harcarik of Raritan Township; a brother, Francis O’Brien of Maryland, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, February 8, at Countryside Funeral Home in Three Bridges, followed by a liturgy at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church in Three Bridges.

Dr. Leonard Moody, 80
Esso Executive; Tax Consultant and Longtime Volunteer
Dr. Leonard E. Moody, 80, of Cranford died on Thursday, February 4, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elyria, Ohio, he graduated from Wesleyan University. He earned a Doctorate in Physical Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin in 1944.
Dr. Moody had been employed by Esso Research and Engineering in Linden, where he worked on product improvement.
During his career with the company, he served as Associate Director of the Products Research Division, Director of the Chemicals Research Division, and the Director of Enjay Laboratories.
Prior to a six year assignment in Japan, he had been Vice President of Esso Eastern Chemicals in New York.
In Tokyo, Dr. Moody was in charge of Exxon’s chemical operations, working as Vice President of Esso Kagaku, Director of Esso Sekiyu, and Vice President of Japan Butyl Company.
After retiring in 1974, he became a registered financial advisor and formed his own tax consulting business.
He served as a volunteer for 15 years with the American Association of Retired Persons’ free “Tax Counseling for the Elderly Program.”
Elected to the Board of Trustees of Visiting Home Health Care, he served as President for 10 years until April of 1998, and continued to remain an active board member.
Dr. Moody was also a Trustee and former President of the Genealogy Society of the West Fields, a board member of New Jersey ReLeaf, and served on the Board of Education in Cranford.
He was a member of both Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi, the scientific honorary society, as well as the Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Cranford Historical Society and the New Jersey Historical Society.
Dr. Moody was a direct descendent of Daniel Boone’s sister, Hannah Boone Stewart, and of pioneer George Washington Moody.
Surviving are his wife, Miriam Paliwoda Moody; three sons, Ernest Moody of Las Vegas, Nevada, William T. Moody of Reston, Virginia and Brian C. Moody of Wellington, Florida; a twin brother, Dr. Leroy S. Moody of Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services was held on Monday, February 8, at St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Cranford. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.

Charles A. Morel, 84
Charles A. Morel, 84, of Point Pleasant died Tuesday, February 2, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Fanwood before moving to Point Pleasant.
He graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1936 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
Mr. Morel had owned AAMCO Transmissions in Red Bank, Asbury and Toms River for many years before retiring in 1985.
Previously, he was a senior partner with C.A. Morel & Sons Inc. in Fanwood.
Surviving are his wife, Marjorie J. Morel; two daughters, Marjorie Bopp and Rosemary Lovelace; three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was held on Saturday, February 6, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Wall Township.
Walter Yurko, 78
Army Bombardier; Was NJ Bell Employee For 36 Years
Walter Yurko, 78, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, February 7, 1999 at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Linden before moving to Scotch Plains in 1970.
Mr. Yurko had been employed by New Jersey Bell for 36 years before retiring in 1982.
He was a member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, the American Legion and the Telephone Pioneers of America.
He served as a bombardier in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Nellie Yurko; three daughters, Denise Yurko of Scotch Plains, Renee Johnson of Washington and Aimee Homik of Montague; a brother, Malvin Yurko of Pawley’s Island, South Carolina, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, February 10, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Interment was held at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.

Edgar J. Ennis, 86
Edgar J. Ennis, 86, of Keansburg died on Monday, February 8, 1999 at home.
Born in Plainfield, he moved to Keansburg over 40 years ago.
Mr. Ennis had been a foreman at Pyro Plastics in Elizabeth before retiring in 1972.
He was predeceased by his wife, Beatrice Schumacher Ennis, in 1988 and by his sister, Ester Lences, in 1989.
Surviving are a son, Roy R. Ennis of Westfield and a sister, Gladys Naylor of Hillsborough.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, February 10, at the Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home in Manville.
