Venera “Vera” Chiarella
October 21, 1912 – December 25, 2006
Venera Cutulle Chiarella of Perth Amboy died on Monday at JFK Haven Hospice in Edison surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Italy, Vera lived in Perth Amboy for over 50 years with the exception of the past two years, when she lived with her daughter in South Plainfield. She was a homemaker and a communicant of Most Holy Rosary Church in Hopelawn.
Vera was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She often spoke of when she married, and after a few months of marriage, her husband was drafted. WW II broke out and he didn’t return home for four years, leaving her as a young bride alone. Those were the hardest years for her; not knowing the outcome of her marriage and life was unbearable for her. She finally reunited with him after the war and started a family.
She was a devoted mother and a loving grandmother to her grandchildren. She cherished her grandson, Eddie who passed away in 1998. Eddie loved his “Nonna” more than life and he often said “he could not bear to lose her”.
Her life was filled with love of family and she will remain in their hearts forever and ever. Her ability to see the beauty of life, the beauty in people and the beauty in herself, made her indeed special. She was a wonderful cook and a dedicated friend.
Venera is predeceased by her beloved husband of 65 years, Gerardo (2005), and her grandson, Edward Peaney (1998).
She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Stella and John Gerlach of South Plainfield and Ida and Michael Ballo of Perth Amboy, her grandson, Jerry Peaney and his wife Michele and her granddaughters, Jo-Anne Ballo and Jennifer Ballo of Perth Amboy.
