Frank J. Malinski, 80
Served in U.S. Army; Active in American Legion; Local Clubs
Frank J. Malinski, 80, of Scotch Plains, died Monday, August 31, 1998 at Integrated Health Services of New Jersey at Somerset Valley in Bound Brook.
Born in Port Chester, New York, he had lived in Westfield and moved to Scotch Plains 50 years ago.
Mr. Malinski was a graduate of Westfield High School.
He had worked for Custom Molders in Scotch Plains as a foreman for 35 years before retiring in 1983.
Mr. Malinski was a Private First Class in the United States Army serving in the 3rd Army, 4th Armored Division, 37th Tank Battalion under General George Patton during World War II. He took part in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and earned many medals including the Silver Star for gallantry. He was a POW in 1945.
Mr. Malinski was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, the American Legion, Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 in Westfield, and was also a member of the 4th Armored Division in New York City.
Surviving are his wife, Teresa Napolitano Malinski; a daughter, Violet M. Malinski of Yonkers, New York; a son, John F. Malinski of West Windsor, and a sister, Stella Malinski of Bayville.
The funeral from The Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, today, Thursday, September 3, at 9:15 a.m.
A Funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Entombment will be at Good Shepherd Chapel Mausoleum in St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.

Anthony Lamastra, 74
Anthony Lamastra, 74, died Saturday, August 29, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Bloomfield, he had moved to Plainfield 63 years ago and then moved to Edison eight years ago.
He had worked in auto sales for more than 50 years with Dom’s Auto Sales in North Plainfield, Autoland in Springfield and various other car agencies in the area. He was the Sales Manager for Tri-State Auto Sales in Plainfield, retiring three years ago.
He was predeceased by a sister, Irene Monaghan.
Surviving are his wife, Diana D’Amico Lamastra; two daughters, Roseann Essick of Bear, Delaware, and Betsy Hirschout of Wilmington, Delaware; a stepson, Chester Rosacha, Jr. of South Plainfield; two brothers, Savino “Sal” Lamastra of Fanwood and Julius Lamastra of Middlesex, and seven grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held yesterday, Wednesday, September 2, at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Newark.
Arrangements were handled by the LaMonica Memorial Home in Bloomfield.
Margaret Raffa
Margaret Raffa of Brick died Sunday, August 30, 1998 in the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Born in Irvington, she had lived in Hillside and Mountainside before moving to Brick five years ago.
Mrs. Raffa was a member of the Rosary Society of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside and Christ the King Church in Hillside, and a substitute teacher in Christ the King Church School.
She was a member of the Foothills and Mountainside Women’s Club, the Oak Ridge Women’s Golf League and the Bridge Club of Vista Pines, Florida.
Mrs. Raffa was also a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hillside Knights of Columbus.
She was a volunteer for Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football in Hillside, Brick Hospital, the Deborah’s Women’s Club, the Deborah Trade Winds Chapter and the Point Pleasant Women’s’ Old Guard. She was a troop leader for both the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.
Surviving are her husband, Russell Raffa; a son, Russell Raffa, Jr.; a daughter, Joyce Ann Simon; two brothers, Edward Carey and Joseph Carey, and a grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered tomorrow, Friday, September 4, in St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Brick.
Arrangements are being handled by the Colonial Funeral Home in Brick.
Frank Intelisano, 69
Company Founder; Had Been Lifelong Resident of Westfield
Frank S. “Slappy” Intelisano, 69, a lifelong resident of Westfield, died on Saturday, August 29, 1998 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Plainfield on January 17, 1929, he was the son of the late Vincent and Mary Bavosa Intelisano.
Mr. Intelisano had been the founder and co-owner of the Bavint Corporation in Garwood for many years, retiring in 1987.
He was awarded a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science in 1951 from the University of Maryland, where he was a member of the Alumni Association.
Mr. Intelisano was a member of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann F. Gerrity Intelisano.
Surviving are three sisters, Patricia Petruzzell and Mary Intelisano, both of Westfield, and Teresa Chambers of Bouse, Arizona; a stepdaughter, Barbara Yuengel of Rahway; two stepsons, William Gerrity and Robert Gerrity, both of Westfield, and six step-grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy will be given at 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, September 3, at the Holy Trinity Church.
Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Ruth S. Wright, 72
Forster Mother For United Family Children’s Society
Ruth S. Wright, 72, of Piscataway, died Monday, August 31, 1998 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Dobbs Ferry, New York, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Piscataway in 1951.
She had been a telephone operator supervisor for 12 years for New Jersey Bell Telephone.
Mrs. Wright was a foster mother of 22 babies for the United Family Children’s Society in Plainfield.
She participated in the program for seven years.
She was a member of the Monmouth County Organ Club and the Hammond Organ Club of Linden.
Surviving are her husband, William R. Wright; a daughter, Linda R. Olekson of Piscataway; two sisters, Virginia Jonas of Bridgewater and Beverly Stephens of Scotch Plains, and three grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held today, Thursday, September 3, at 9:30 a.m. in the McCriskin Home for Funerals in South Plainfield.
Norman Varandas, 71
Mason Leader; Coast Guard Seaman in World War II
Norman O. Varandas, 71, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, August 26, 1998 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in New London, Connecticut, he had lived in Roselle before moving to Scotch Plains in 1973.
Mr. Varandas was a sales associate for Sears in Watchung for the past 10 years. Prior to that, he had worked in mortgage banking and real estate.
He served as a Seaman Second Class in the United States Coast Guard during World War II.
He was Past Vice Commander of the American Legion Post No. 102 in Linden.
He also was Past Master of the Corner Stone Tyrian Free and Accepted Masonic Lodge, also in Linden.
Mr. Varandas was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Belle Baker Varandas; a son, David N. Varandas of Oakland, and a sister, Diana Vermette of Duncan, Oklahoma.
Funeral services were held on Friday, August 28, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Rae Clevenger, 71
Church Rosarian; Had Worked at Garwood Quick Chek
Rae Colapietro Clevenger, 71, of Garwood died on Thursday, August 27, 1998 at her home.
Born in Westfield, she moved to Garwood in 1953.
Mrs. Clevenger had worked at the Quick Chek in Garwood for 10 years, retiring in 1994.
Previously, she had been a checker in the produce department at A&P; in Westfield for 10 years.
She was a member of St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood and belonged to its Rosary Society.
She was also a member of the Garwood Senior Citizens Club and the Ladies’ Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Bayleaf Post No. 6807 in Garwood.
Mrs. Clevenger was predeceased by her brother, James Colapietro.
Surviving are her husband, Garnet Clevenger; a daughter, Sharon Vastano of South Plainfield; a son, Kenneth Clevenger of Garwood; a brother, Thomas Colapietro, and three sisters, Mary Colapietro, Christine Materia and Madeline Ayres.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, August 31, at St. Anne’s Church in Garwood, following the funeral from the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Melvin J. Hazell, 52
Melvin J. Hazell, 52, a lifelong resident of Perth Amboy, died on Wednesday, February 23, 2000 at home.
Mr. Hazell had been employed by Pathmark of Woodbridge as a warehouseman for 23 years before his retirement.
He attended Middlesex County College in Edison and Virginia Union University in Richmond, Va.
He was a member of St. James African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Perth Amboy and a member of Teamsters Local No. 863.
He was predeceased by his parents, Herman and Muriel Hazell, and a brother, George M. Hazell.
Surviving are his wife of 29 years, Verna Hazell; three daughters, Vonnie Hazell, Melanie Hazell and Jessica Hazell, all of Perth Amboy, and two brothers, Herman A. Hazell of Perth Amboy and Larry M. Hazell of Scotch Plains.
Services were held on Saturday, February 26, from St. James Church.
Interment took place at Alpine Cemetery in Perth Amboy.
Arrangements were handled by the James Funeral Home in Perth Amboy.
