John J. Barnes, 82
Merck Retiree; Elks and American Legion Member
John J. “Mike” Barnes, 82, of Westfield died on Saturday, February 26, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Philadelphia, he had lived in Rahway for many years before moving to Westfield in 1957.
Mr. Barnes had been employed by Merck and Company, Inc. in Rahway for 37 years before retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the Merck and Company Quarter Century Club.
He also was a life member of the Rahway Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1075 and a member of the Rahway High School Football Hall of Fame.
Mr. Barnes served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was a member of Martin Wallberg Post No. 3 of the American Legion in Westfield.
He was a communicant of St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Linden.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Andrew Barnes and Paul Barnes, and two sisters, Jane Rack and Veronica O’Connor.
Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Jane Jeambey Barnes.
Private funeral services were arranged by the Pettit-Davis Funeral Home in Rahway.
Interment took place in Rahway Cemetery.
Ralph Vendetti
Was Sales Executive For Footwear Company in California
Ralph Vendetti of Manhattan Beach, Calif., died on Tuesday, September 12, 2000 in the Newark home of his parents, Carmen and Josephine Vendetti.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Westfield before recently relocating to California.
Mr. Vendetti was Vice President of Sales for seven years with Sketchers USA Footwear in Manhattan Beach.
He had previously been a buyer for Macy’s department store and regional manager for Keds Footwear.
He was a member of the Two Ten Shoe Industry Foundation.
Besides his parents, he is survived by his wife, Marti Vendetti; a son, Christian Silva, and two daughters, Nicole Vendetti and Alexa Vendetti.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, September 16, in St. James Roman Catholic Church in Springfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Galante Funeral Home in Union.
Dominick Di Francesco, Jr., 69
Owned Local Landscaping Firm for 40 Years
Dominick Di Francesco, Jr., 69, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Tuesday, September 12, 2000 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Mr. Di Francesco had owned and operated Di Francesco Landscaping in Scotch Plains for 40 years before retiring in 1993.
Surviving are three daughters, Debra Kelley, Lisa Delnegro and Katherine Massa; a son, Dominick Di Francesco; two sisters, Rose Polon and Virginia Di Francesco, and five grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, September 16, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Edna Cooper, 98
Hospital Volunteer; Ambulance Driver for Westfield Squad
Edna Pearsall Cooper, 98, died on Saturday, September 9, 2000 at the Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, Vt.
Born on July 3, 1902 in Westfield, the daughter of Leigh M. and May Moffet Pearsall, she was educated in the Westfield area schools and graduated from the National Park Seminary, a finishing school, in Chevy Chase, Md.
She and her husband relocated in 1976 to Melrose, Fla., where she resided until moving to Vermont in February of 1997.
Mrs. Cooper served as a Captain and ambulance driver for the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad during World War II.
She later worked as a volunteer at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield and also served as President of the Women’s Auxiliary.
While living in New Jersey, she was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederic Waldemar Cooper, Jr., in 1985; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Scudder, in 1990, and by a grandson, Robert B. Fast, in 1982.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Fast in East Poultney, Vt.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, October 3, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Melrose Rescue Squad, Melrose, Fla., 32666.
John T. Gaffney, 82
Pace Graduate; Director of Materials Management
John T. Gaffney, 82, of Edison died on Saturday, September 16, 2000 at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown.
Born in White Plains, N.Y., he had lived in Scotch Plains before relocating to Edison in 1982.
Mr. Gaffney had been Director of Materials Management at Jersey City Medical Center in Jersey City before his retirement in 1992.
Earlier, he had worked in the same capacity for Roosevelt Hospital in Middlesex County.
Before that, he was the Director of Purchasing for Purolator Products in Rahway for 20 years.
He was a graduate of Pace University in New York City. Mr. Gaffney had been a member of the International Materials Management Society and the American Society for Hospital Materials Management.
Surviving are his wife, Janet Ryan Gaffney; a son, John T. Gaffney, Jr.; a daughter, Ellen Gaffney Sheedy; a brother, Myles J. Gaffney; a sister, Jean Gaffney Shugg, and eight grandchildren.
The funeral was held yesterday, Wednesday, September 20, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a funeral Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Interment took place at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.

Shirley Cohen
Shirley Cohen of Chatham died on Friday, September 15, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Fort Lee and Westfield before moving to Chatham 15 years ago.
Mrs. Cohen had worked for the Fort Lee school superintendent for more than 10 years before retiring in 1968.
She was a member of the Fort Lee Chapter of Hadassah and the Sisterhood of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Cohen.
Surviving are two daughters, Marcy Cherensky of Westfield and Amy Simowitz of Bethesda, Md., and four grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, September 17, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Interment took place at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.
Chester Kellogg
Insurance Executive; Chaired Westfield Adjustment Board
Chester M. Kellogg, a former resident of Westfield, died on Saturday, September 16, 2000 at the Monroe Village Nursing Facility in Monroe Township.
Born in Brooklyn in 1905, he had lived in Westfield from 1907 until moving to Monroe Township more than a decade ago.
Mr. Kellogg joined the A. M. Best Company of Oldwick, an insurance rating and publishing firm, in 1929.
He retired as Director of the company in 1980 after completing 50 years of service.
During his tenure with the company, he was in charge of its weekly and monthly publications and served as Editor-in-Chief of its monthly magazines.
An editor, speaker and author, Mr. Kellogg served on a number of insurance industry committees, particularly in the fields of research and terminology.
He was also a Director of the American Risk and Insurance Association and of international insurance seminars, and was on the Executive Committee of the Insurance Section of the New York Board of Trade.
Mr. Kellogg was a Director of the National State Bank of Elizabeth and several other corporations; Past President of the Drug and Chemical Club of New York and the Hawthorne Park Club in Sparta.
He served for many years as Chairman of the Westfield Board of Adjustment and as President of the Trustees of the Westfield United Fund.
Mr. Kellogg was a member of the First Congregational Church of Westfield, the Westfield Historical Society and the Sons of the American Revolution.
He was a graduate of the Lawrence School, Dartmouth College and the Amos Tuck Graduate School at Dartmouth.
He was predeceased last year by his wife, the former Alice E. Luellen of Mountain Lakes, whom he married in 1930.
Surviving are three sons, C. Burton Kellogg, Hugh M. Kellogg and Daniel B. Kellogg; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Private arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Theodore Kowalczyn, 84
Theodore Kowalczyn, 84, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, September 13, 2000 in the Barbara Cheung Memorial Hospice in Edison.
Born in Ukraine, he had lived in Scranton, Pa. and in Rochester, N.Y. before moving to Scotch Plains eight years ago.
Mr. Kowalczyn had been a machine operator for the GM Corporation in Rochester for 25 years before retiring in 1980.
He served in the Ukrainian Attachment of the British Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Irene Kowalczyn, and two sons, Theodore Kowalchyn and Nicholas Kowalchyn.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, September 16, in St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carteret, following the funeral from the Walter J. Johnson Funeral Home in Clark.
