John Miller, 69
Was Cabinetmaker; Industrial Manager and Army Veteran
John Miller, 69, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, September 18, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Scotland, he lived in Scotch Plains most of his life.
Mr. Miller had been the Industrial Manager of the State Use Industries Department at East Jersey State Prison in Rahway before retiring in 1997.
He was formerly employed as a foreman with the J. D. Loizeaux Lumber Company in Plainfield.
He was also a cabinetmaker. Mr. Miller served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred Miller; a daughter, Rose A. Gowesky of Point Pleasant; two sons, Andrew S. Miller of Pen Argyle, Pa. and John W. Miller of Scotch Plains; two sisters, Janet Dunn and Elizabeth Wilson, both of Fanwood, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, September 20, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Alfons Baiersdorfer, 92
Alfons Baiersdorfer, 92, of Mountainside died on Sunday, September 17, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Munich, Germany, he had lived in Irvington before moving to Mountainside 35 years ago.
Mr. Baiersdorfer had been a tool and die maker with G. T. E. in Newark for 30 years before retiring in 1965.
He was a member and Past President of Dank, a national German-American organization, and of the Deutscher Club in Clark.
Surviving are a son, Herbert R. Baiersdorfer; a daughter, Catherine Ortiz; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, September 20, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, following the funeral from Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield.
Doris Krohn Rau, 79
Doris Krohn Rau, 79, of Summerville, S. C., died on Sunday, September 17, 2000 at the Oakbrook Convalescent Center in Summerville.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Scotch Plains before relocating to South Carolina in 1982.
Mrs. Rau was a former member of the Plainfield Country Club in Edison and the Fanwood Presbyterian Church in Fanwood.
She was predeceased by her husband, Louis E. Rau, in 1981. Surviving are a daughter, Pamela Stoney of Charleston, S. C.; two sisters, Carol K. Johnson of Suwanee, Ga. and Iris K. Barkley of Myrtle Beach, S. C., and a granddaughter.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. this Saturday, September 23, at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Lynn S. Russell, 53
Lynn S. Russell, 53, of Bethlehem Township died on Sunday, September 17, 2000 in Hunterdon Medical Center in Raritan Township.
Born in Mineola, N.Y., Mrs. Russell had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Bethlehem Township 15 years ago.
Surviving are John R. Russell, her husband of 32 years; two daughters, Sara E. Russell and Katie E. L. Russell; a son, Scott M. Russell; her parents, William and Eleanor Schroeder, and a brother, William D. Schroeder.
Memorial services will be held at 5 p.m. today, Thursday, September 21, in the Martin Funeral Home in Clinton.
Catherine Ryan, 79
Was Office Manager For 12 Years for Higgins and Bonner
Catherine A. Ryan, 79, of Springfield died on Friday, September 15, 2000 at home.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Roselle, Clark and Westfield before relocating to Springfield three years ago.
Mrs. Ryan had been an office manager with the Higgins and Bonner Funeral Home in Elizabeth from 1970 through 1982, when she retired.
Surviving are three sons, John E. Ryan, Robert D. Ryan and Jeffrey Q. Ryan; two daughters, Patricia A. Ryan and Deborah S. Dolan; a sister, Margaret Fox, and eight grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday, September 19, in St. Joseph the Carpenter Roman Catholic Church in Roselle, following the funeral from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Grace Shepherd, 86
Was President Of Visiting Nurses Association
Grace B. Shepherd, 86, of Cornwall Manor in Cornwall, Pa., died on Monday, September 18, 2000 at the Manor.
Born in Brooklyn, the daughter of the late Edward and Mary Cassidy Buckley, she had formerly been a Westfield resident for many years.
Mrs. Shepherd was a past member and former President of the Visiting Nurses Association in Lebanon, Pa., and a former member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Auxiliary, also in Lebanon.
She was a member of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in Cornwall.
Surviving are two daughters, Suzanne S. Bagley of The Woodlands, Tex. and Bonnie S. Yocum of Lebanon; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 25, in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, where visitors will be received from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the Mass.
Interment will take place in the Holy Savior Cemetery in Cornwall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VNA, Cornwall Road and Houck Street, Lebanon, Pa. 17042 or to the Cornwall Manor Society, P. O. Box 125, Cornwall, Pa. 17016.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rohland Funeral Home in Lebanon.
Agnes McCallum, 97
Agnes McCallum, 97, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, September 13, 2000 at home.
Born in Philadelphia, she relocated to Scotch Plains several years ago.
Surviving are a daughter, Agnes J. Wilson; two sons, James Jackson, Jr. and Walter T. Jackson; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be arranged by the family.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Edward R. Vail, 79
Edward R. Vail, 79, of Kenilworth died on Thursday, September 14, 2000 in Union Hospital.
Born in Westfield, he had lived in Clark for many years before moving to Kenilworth several weeks ago.
Mr. Vail had been employed by the Hyatt Roller Bearing Corporation in Clark for 48 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1991.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Clark.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Catherine Vail, and two sisters, Peggy Kane and Louise Vail.
Services were held on Monday, September 18, in the August F. Schmidt Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
Walter W. Bittner
Walter William Bittner of Gainesville, Fla. died on Friday, August 25, 2000 in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Gainesville.
Born in Brooklyn on October 5, 1915, he had lived in Westfield for 12 years before moving to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. in 1957.
He relocated to Gainesville several years ago.
Mr. Bittner had been a Trust Officer at First National City Bank in New York City.
A 1935 graduate of Yale University in New Haven, Conn., he was a member of the Yale Club and the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield.
He was also active with The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Mr. Bittner served on active duty with the United States Navy for six years in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theatres.
He was also in the Active Reserve for 10 years.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Himmelberger Bittner; three daughters, Jerilyn B. Merritt and Linda Crider of Gainesville and Nancy Andrews of Bridgewater Corners, Vt.; three sons, William Bittner of Gainesville, Douglas Bittner of Fort Lauderdale, Russell Bittner of Brooklyn; 14 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
A private family memorial and burial at sea will take place in Fort Lauderdale.
