Desmond R. "Desi" Shanley
Mr. Shanley, 74, of Red Bank died Nov. 2 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided there and in Rumson before moving to Red Bank. He was general organizer and serviced the Ironworker’s District Council of Greater New York before retiring in 1994. He began his career as an ironworker in 1954, serving as a member of New York Local 40, and business agent and president of Local 170, New York City. He was also a professional boxer who finished his career with more than 70 victories, and was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1989. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen Shanley of Red Bank; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Felicia and Roy Edwards of Neptune, Danielle Shanley of Highlands, Sue and Tom Schroll of Red Bank, and Michelle Shanley of San Francisco; three brothers, Raymond Shanley of Bayonne, the Rev. Kevin O’Carm of Darien, Ill., and Michael Shanley of Jersey City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann Marie and Robert Brooks of Centerville, Mass., and Colleen and Lester Jennings of Eatontown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Anthony J. Savarese
Mr. Savarese, 79, of Oceanport, died Oct. 23 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided there prior to moving to Oceanport 20 years ago. He was a stockbroker at Adams and Peck, New York City, and at various area brokerage firms, retiring 14 years ago. He was a parishioner of Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church, Monmouth Beach, and St. Joan of Arc, Fort Monmouth. Mr. Savarese is survived by his wife of 51 years, Constance Allegra Savarese; three sons and daughters-in-law, Philip J. and Susan Savarese of Manahawkin, Joseph A. and Kathleen Savarese of Jupiter, Fla., and Michael A. and Rachel Savarese of Oceanport; a sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Jack Ronan of Brick; and five grandsons. Giovannina "Janis" Bonanno Bianchi
Mrs. Bianchi, 82, of Middletown died Oct. 22 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, she resided in Newark before moving to Middletown 42 years ago. She was a beautician and cosmetologist at Harbour Island Spa, Long Branch, for 20 years, retiring in 1989. She also worked at several beauty salons in the area. She was a member of the Middletown Senior Club. Mrs. Bianchi was predeceased by two brothers, John and Luke Bonanno. She is survived by her husband, Ugo P. Bianchi of Keansburg; five sons and four daughters-in-law, Leonard Bianchi and Jean Howson of Atlantic Highlands, Howard Bianchi of Oakland, Calif., Hugo and Randi Yaffee-Bianchi of Tinton Falls, Timothy and Mary Cooper-Bianchi of Fair Haven, and Geoffrey and Judy Bianchi of Duluth, Minn.; a daughter and son-in-law, Josiana Bianchi and Peter Blum of Red Bank; two brothers, Anthony Bonanno of Shrewsbury and Humbert Bonanno of Las Vegas; four sisters, Anne Motycka of Sparks, Nev.; Rose Scotti of Little Silver; Mary Moseley of Seattle, Wash.; and Loretta Powell of El Paso, Texas; four grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Carmine Benante
Mr. Benante, 85, of Monmouth Beach died Oct. 29 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided in Oceanport for 40 years before moving to Monmouth Beach in 2002. He was a supervisor of research in pathology at the Veterans Hospital, East Orange, for 30 years, retiring in 1972. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II, from 1942-45. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2140, Long Branch. Mr. Benante is survived by his wife, Concetta Valentino Benante; and a son, Carl Benante of Monmouth Beach. Blanca R. Morales
Mrs. Morales, 68, of Red Bank died Oct. 21 at St. Barnabas Hospice, Long Branch. Born in Camuy, Puerto Rico, she had been a resident of Red Bank for more than 40 years. She was a homemaker, and a seamstress at various apparel companies in the Red Bank area. She was a communicant of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. She enjoyed time with her family, cooking and collecting dolls. She was predeceased by her first husband, Juan P. Nieves. She is survived by her husband of 20 years, Jose Carrero of Red Bank; six sons and four daughters-in-law, Juan P. and Gloria Nieves of New Mexico, Berto and Angela Nieves of Florida, Jose Nieves of Florida, and Orlando Nieves, and Victor and Lisa Nieves, all of New Jersey; four daughters and one son-in-law, Olga Nieves, Annie and Quiency Frazier, Hilda Nieves and Evelyn Nieves, all of New Jersey; 24 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several stepsons and stepdaughters. Clementine "Ginger" Haberski Kucmyda
Mrs. Kucmyda, 87, of Keansburg died Oct. 21 at Bayside Manor, Keansburg. Born in Linden, she had been a resident of the Middletown area since 1958. She was a seamstress for several companies for 25 years, retiring in 1988. Mrs. Kucmyda was predeceased by her husband, Charles Kucmyda, in 1991; a sister, Lillian Konecni; and a brother, Victor Haberski. She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Roberta Kucmyda of Hazleton, Pa.; three daughters, Barbara Thayer of Tinton Falls, Dolores Uras of Middletown, and Linda Gould of Marlton; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and LaVerne Haberski of Emerson; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Helen V. Hill
Miss Hill, 94, of Red Bank died Dec. 6 at Bayside Manor Assisted Living, Keansburg. Born in Jersey City, she resided there for 77 years prior to moving to Shadow Lake Village, Red Bank, in 1986. She was an executive secretary at American Export Lines Inc., New York City, for 34 years, retiring in 1976. Prior to that, she was a secretary at First National Bank of Jersey City for 15 years. She was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank, and a former parishioner at St. Aloysius Church, Jersey City. She enjoyed time with her family, traveling to Ireland, and bingo. Scott L. Koerkel
Mr. Koerkel, 36, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown, died Dec. 8 at home. Born in Belleville, he had been a resident of Middletown for the past 30 years. He was a construction foreman at Frank McBride Co., Edison, for 10 years. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He enjoyed boating and fishing. Catherine Chobany McCracken
Mrs. McCracken, 84, of Long Branch died Nov. 17 at the St. Barnabas Hospice and Palliative Care Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Summerhill, Pa., she resided in Long Branch for 60 years. She was a banquet waitress at the Channel Club, Monmouth Beach; Old Orchard County Club, Eatontown; and Molly Pitcher Inn, Red Bank, for 50 years, before retiring in 1986. She was a member of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church, Red Bank. Mrs. McCracken was predeceased by a son, Gregory, in 1986. Gloria Sarpa Brennan
Mrs. Brennan, 80, of Oceanport died Dec. 2 at home. Born in Jersey City, she resided in Sea Bright and Rumson prior to moving to Oceanport six years ago. She was a member of the Rumson and Sea Bright Seniors Citizens clubs, Sea Bright Home School Association, and Women’s Auxiliary at St. Alphonso’s Retreat Home, West End section of Long Branch. Mrs. Brennan was predeceased by her husband, William Brennan Sr., in 1997; a sister, Mary Marino, in 2001; and a brother, Thomas Scarpa, in 1976. James "Uncle Jim" Foggia
Mr. Foggia, 89, of Oceanport died Nov. 19 at home. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident of the Shore area. He was a florist at F.G. Foggia Florist Inc., Oceanport, retiring in 1979. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. He was a life member of the Amerigo Vespucci Society and the Port-au-Peck Fire Department, Oceanport, and was also an exempt fireman. He was predeceased by his wife, Carmel Apicelli Foggia, in 1983; and a daughter, Rosanne Foggia Williamson, in 1992.
