Elizabeth C. Wentlandt Lenard, 92, of Whiting died on Thursday, September 21, 2000 in the Keswick Pines Nursing Home in Whiting.
Born in Westfield, she had lived in Roselle for more than 50 years before moving to Whiting.
Mrs. Lenard had been a bookkeeper for Burry Business Procedures in Cranford before retiring many years ago.
She had also worked for Fishman’s of Elizabeth and Overlook Hospital in Summit as a bookkeeper.
Mrs. Lenard was a member of the Washington School Parent Teacher Association and the Girl Scouts of America in Roselle.
She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Lenard, in 1987.
Surviving are four daughters, Jane E. Littrell of Manchester, Mary C. Shaw of Point Pleasant, Betta Jacobs of Rahway and Nancy M. Humphrey of Westfield; a son, Arthur J. Lenard of Point Pleasant, and seven grandchildren.
A service was held on Monday, September 25, in the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Dr. Leslie H. Apirian, 52
Practiced Dentistry in Westfield for 25 Years
Dr. Leslie H. Apirian, 52, of Warren, who maintained a dental practice in Westfield for the past 25 years, died on Saturday, September 23, 2000 in St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Springfield before moving to Warren 23 years ago.
Dr. Apirian was on the staff at Overlook Hospital in Summit and was a volunteer Professor at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in Newark.
He was a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia and of the New York University Dental School.
He was a member of the Alpha Omega dental fraternity and recently established a fund in his name at St. Barnabas Medical Center to aid cancer patients.
Surviving are Robin Apirian, his wife of 31 years; two daughters, Jen Apirian and Lauren Apirian; two sons, Ari Apirian and Michael Apirian; two brothers, Marc Apirian and Dr. Howard Apirian, and a grandchild.
Memorial services were held on Monday, September 25, in Temple B’Nai Abraham in Livingston.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Bernheim-Apter-Goldsticker Suburban Funeral Chapel in Maplewood.
Mary M. Godfrey, 87
Mary M. Godfrey, 87, of Westfield died on Sunday, September 17, 2000 at The Woodlands Nursing Home in Plainfield.
Born in Scotch Plains, she grew up in Plainfield and moved to Westfield in the 1950s.
Mrs. Godfrey had been employed as an office worker with Howell Electric in Plainfield before she retired.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Godfrey.
Surviving is a sister, Anna “Sally” Godfrey of North Plainfield.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 6, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Ruth Silverthorne, 66
Ruth Clare Silverthorne, 66, of Franklin, N.C., died on Monday, September 18, 2000 in Angel Hospital in Franklin.
Born in Paterson, she had lived in Mountainside and Largo, Fla., before relocating to Franklin in 1995.
Mrs. Silverthorne had been a computer room supervisor with Ciba Pharmaceutical in Summit for many years before retiring.
Surviving is her husband of 23 years, William T. Silverthorne.
Arrangements were handled by the Bryant Funeral Home in Franklin.
Paula Eaker, 72
Paula Eaker, 72, of Las Vegas, Nev., died on Tuesday, September 19, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, Mrs. Eaker had lived in Westfield before moving to Las Vegas 16 years ago.
Surviving are her husband, Hyman Eaker; a son, Bruce Eaker; a daughter, Dr. Bonnie Weil; two sisters, Lorraine Heyman and Beryl Gasalberti; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, September 24, in the King Solomon Cemetery in Clifton.
Arrangements were handled by the Jewish Memorial Chapel in Clifton.
Stephen F. Mannuzza, 48
Was Partner In Accounting Firm, Past Rotary Head
Stephen F. Mannuzza, 48, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, September 22, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Cranford before relocating to Scotch Plains four years ago.
Mr. Mannuzza was a partner with his father, Frank S. Mannuzza of Linden, in Frank S. Mannuzza and Company, an accounting firm in Clark, where he worked for 20 years.
The company merged with Fazio, Mannuzza, Roche, Tankel & D’Angerio in Springfield, where he worked for four years.
Earlier, Mr. Mannuzza had worked for Haskins & Sells in New York City.
He was a 1974 graduate of Pace University in New York City, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
He was a member of the New Jersey Society and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Mannuzza was a Past President of the Rotary Club of Cranford and had also been Treasurer and a Trustee of the Suburban Golf Club in Union.
Surviving, in addition to his father, are his wife, Jasmin L. Mannuzza; his mother, Tana Mannuzza, and two sisters, Francine A. Mannuzza and Vicki Maria Colasuonno.
A Mass was held on Tuesday, September 26, in St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Church in Linden, following the funeral from the Werson Funeral Home, also in Linden.
Eileen Ruerup, 81
Owned Music Store; Communicant of Holy Trinity Church
Eileen Marie Brown Ruerup, 81, a lifelong Westfield resident, died on Friday, September 22, 2000 at home.
Mrs. Ruerup had owned Eileen’s Music Shop in Scotch Plains before retiring many years ago.
She was a communicant of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman Ruerup, former Chief of the Westfield Fire Department, in 1991.
Surviving are two daughters, Geraldine Furchak Saliola and Eileen Ruerup, both of Westfield; a sister, Honora Pfeiffer, also of Westfield; two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, September 25, in the Holy Trinity Church.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
William A. Thawley
President Emeritus Of Philadelphia’s University of Sciences
William A. Thawley, 84, of Newtown Square, Pa., President emeritus of the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, died on Thursday, September 21, 2000 at Thomas Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.
Born in Wilmington, Del. on December 22, 1915, he had lived in Swarthmore, Pa. for 18 years, in Westfield for 28 years and in Prospect Park, Pa. for nine years before relocating to the White Horse Village retirement community in Newtown Square three years ago.
Mr. Thawley served as the 18th President of the University of the Sciences, then known as Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, from 1980 to 1984. He also served on the university’s Board of Trustees for more than 20 years, including several terms as Vice-Chairman. He retired from the board in 1988.
The William A. Thawley Auditorium in the university’s Pharmacology/ Toxicology Center was dedicated in his honor, while the reception area is dedicated to his first wife, Louise Touchstone Thawley, who died in 1981.
Prior to assuming the presidency of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science, Mr. Thawley was Senior Vice President of Penick Corporation, later a unit of CPC International, Inc. and Best Foods. He joined the company in 1952 in pharmaceutical sales.
Early in his career, he had been a community pharmacist. He later was a sales representative for Burroughs Welcome & Company.
A 1932 graduate of the former Prospect Park High School, Mr. Thawley earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy from the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science in 1938. He was honored by the university in 1950 with the Ivor Griffith Service Award.
He was a United States Navy veteran, having served as a PT boat captain in the South Pacific during World War II.
Mr. Thawley served as Vice Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia; a member of the Board of Directors of the University City Science Center in Philadelphia; Vice Chairman of the Board of the Philadelphia Association for Clinical Trials; Chairman of the Certified Medical Representatives Institute, and Vice Chairman of the Board of the West Philadelphia Corporation.
He was a member of the Development Committee of Community Home Health Services of Philadelphia and of the Steering Committee of both the United States Senatorial Business Advisory Board and the Greater Philadelphia Committee for Medical Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Mr. Thawley was Vice President of the American Pharmaceutical Association, New York section; Committee Chairman of the National Wholesale Druggists’ Association; Vice President of Parenteral Drug Association, and Director of both the Philadelphia Drug Exchange and the Drug, Chemical and Allied Trades Association.
He was also a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science; the American Chemical Society; the American Institute of the History of Pharmacy; the Institute of Food Technologists; the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association; the Academy of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the American Society of Pharmacognosy.
He was a member and former Trustee of the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife of 18 years, Mary Joanna Foster Thawley; two sons, Thomas A. Thawley of Reisterstown, Md. and Philip M. Thawley of Wilton, Conn.; a brother, Thomas M. Thawley of Annapolis, Md.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, October 4, at the Swarthmore Presbyterian Church in Swarthmore, Pa.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Frank C. Videon Funeral Home in Broomall, Pa.
