Melvin Liberman
Was NJIT Graduate; Army Veteran Worked at Bomb Test Site
Melvin Liberman of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, January 2, 2000 in the Roosevelt Care Center in Edison.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Irvington and Springfield before moving to Scotch Plains 11 years ago.
Mr. Liberman served in the United States Army in the 1950s and was an electronics research engineer for bomb testing at the Mercury Nevada bomb test site.
He received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark.
He was a member of the B’Nai B’rith of Springfield and the International Society of Electrical Engineering.
Surviving are his wife, Bobbie Liberman; a daughter, Patti Liberman; a stepdaughter, Elisa Zinberg; two stepsons, Scott Zinberg and Jay Zinberg; his mother, Doris Liberman, and six grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, January 3, at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Mildred Raichle, 93
Founding Member Of Redeemer Lutheran Church
Mildred Raichle, 93, of Westfield died on Friday, December 31, 1999 at home.
Born in Staten Island, she moved to Westfield 61 years ago.
Mrs. Raichle was a founding member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield and was also a member of its Valpo Guild and a founding member of its Ladies Aid Society.
She was also a member of the Westfield and Mountainside Senior Citizens and the Staten Island Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are two sons, Herman Raichle and Robert Raichle; a daughter, Retired Air Force Colonel Mildred Raichle, and a grandchild.
Services will be held today, Thursday, January 6, at 2 p.m. in the Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Helen Stavenick, 74
Purchasing Agent; Had Owned Alumico in Kenilworth
Helen Stavenick, 74, of Mountainside died on Sunday, January 2, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, she had lived in North Arlington and Maplewood before moving to Mountainside in 1977.
She had also maintained a home in St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, from 1986 through 1998.
Mrs. Stavenick had been a steel purchasing agent for many years with Republic Metal Products in Springfield before retiring.
She had previously owned Alumico in Kenilworth and created the HelHar process for anodizing aluminum.
While in her teens, she earned a pilot’s license, and after retiring obtained both a travel agent license and a real estate license.
Surviving are her husband, Leo V. Stavenick; two daughters, Carol Tharaud and Marilyn Maroney; a son, Harry Maroney; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A memorial service was held yesterday, Wednesday, January 5, in the Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield.
Mario Giaimo, 76
Had Been Executive At Jersey Plastic Molders for 35 Years
Mario Giaimo, 76, of Delray Beach, Fla. died on Sunday, January 2, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Mountainside before moving to Delray Beach nine years ago.
Mr. Giaimo had been the Vice President of manufacturing and engineering with Jersey Plastic Molders in Irvington, where he worked for 35 years before retiring in 1989.
He was a United States Navy veteran of World War II and served with the Seabees Construction Unit and later as a bandmaster.
He also was a member of the Society of Plastic Engineers. Surviving are his wife, Clara Giaimo; three sons, William Giaimo, Robert Giaimo and Bradford Giaimo; a daughter, Barbara Spina; two sisters, Esther Saladino and Gloria Patrizio, and nine grandchildren.
A memorial Mass was held yesterday, Wednesday, January 5, in the Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church in Union.
The funeral was from the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.
Mary Coffman, 76
Was Department Head At Warranty Title Agency in Springfield
Mary Ruth Tambella Coffman, 76, of Bridgewater died on Saturday, January 1, 2000 at the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Queens, she had lived in Fanwood before moving to Bridgewater seven years ago.
Mrs. Coffman had been the head of the Policy Department at Warranty Title Agency in Springfield for 10 years before retiring in 1999.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald Lee Coffman, in 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Gerald Lee Coffman, Jr. of Davidsonville, Md. and Louis R. Coffman of San Diego, Calif.; three daughters, Cynthia Marie Yasuda of Wellesley, Mass., Andrea Reeves of Collegeville, Pa. and Maria C. Mensinger of Bridgewater, and 10 grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass was held yesterday, Wednesday, January 5, at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Bridgewater.
Interment was private.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Memorial donations may be made to the Somerset Medical Center – Hospice in Somerville.
Anna Stern, 91
Anna Stern, 91, a resident of the Senior Citizen Housing in Westfield, died on Thursday, February 3, 2000 in the Westfield Network, Genesis ElderCare Center in Westfield.
She would have turned 92 years old on Monday.
Born in Potunov, Poland, she was orphaned as a child and came alone to the United States in 1920.
She lived with relatives in New York City, eventually supporting herself as a garment worker.
A homemaker after her marriage, she had been a resident of Manhattan before moving to Westfield four years ago.
She was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Copeland J. Stern, in October of 1994.
Surviving are a son, Gerald L. Stern of Brooklyn; a daughter, Renee C. Schleifer of Westfield; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was conducted by Kehila Chapels of Brooklyn on Sunday, February 6.

Margaret Cox, 82
Margaret Cox, 82, a former area resident, died on Wednesday, February 16, 2000 in the Wayne Woodlands Manor Nursing Home in Waymart, Pa.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Scotch Plains and in Jamesburg before moving to Waymart in 1996.
Mrs. Cox had been an executive secretary for the Hoffman Beverage Company in Newark for many years before retiring in 1974.
She was a graduate of the Drake Business School in Elizabeth.
Services were held on Friday, February 18, in the James W. Conroy Funeral Home in South Plainfield.
Interment took place in Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.
Dr. Joan Merel, 67
Retired Teacher; Was Hadassah’s Woman of the Year
Dr. Joan Merel, 67, of Basking Ridge died on Thursday, February 17, 2000 at home.
Born in Philadelphia, she had lived in Hackensack, Verona and Westfield before moving to Basking Ridge five years ago.
Dr. Merel had been a teacher with the Verona school system for 29 years before retiring in 1995.
She was a member of Hadassah in Westfield, where she was voted Woman of the Year in 1999.
She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and Doctoral degrees in education, all from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Dr. Merel also was a volunteer at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside.
Surviving are her husband, Lee Merel; a brother, Roy Blumenthal, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted on Friday, February 18, from the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Interment was at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin.
