Julia Zimpel, 96
Julia Zimpel, 96, of Highland Park died on Monday, October 23, 2000 at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Hibernia on February 17, 1904, Mrs. Zimpel was a homemaker.
She was predeceased by her husband, Alfred E. Zimpel, in 1991.
Surviving are two daughters, Rose Marie Taylor of Crofton, Md. and Betty Jane Roussakis of Scotch Plains; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 27, at Rusciano Funeral Home in Highland Park, followed by a Mass at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Highland Park.
Interment took place at Resurrection Cemetery in Piscataway.

Lucia Evangelista, 83
Opera Soprano Also Produced Gala Performances
Lucia Evangelista, 83, of Scotch Plains, who enjoyed a distinguished career as a soprano and producer of operas, died on Thursday, October 26, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born on April 30, 1917 in Genoa, Italy, she had lived in West Orange before relocating to Scotch Plains.
Miss Evangelista, a soprano, studied at the Verdi Conservatory of Genoa, making her debut at age 19 as Mimi in Puccini’s “La Bohéme” in the Politeama Genovese.
During an Italian tour three years later, she reprised the role of Mimi, sang Violetta in Verdi’s “La Traviata” and performed the title roles in both “Madama Butterfly” and Lehar’s “The Merry Widow.”
She traveled to the United States in 1947 for two seasons at the New York City Opera, where Violetta became her signature role.
Miss Evangelista subsequently toured North America with Fortune Gallo’s San Carlo Opera Company.
She also made guest appearances with opera companies in Philadelphia, New Orleans, Detroit and San Francisco, among other cities.
She additionally toured Latin America during this period.
The soprano, who married Metropolitan Opera basso Jerome Hines in Lawrenceburg, Ind., in 1952, sang the role of Violetta that same year in an hour-long version of “La Traviata” for the “Opera Cameos” television program. Her appearance led to her being recognized as the leading interpreter of the role at that time.
Miss Evangelista and her husband did several concert tours together and appeared on the “Voice of Firestone” television program.
She also appeared frequently in Mr. Hines’ opera “I Am the Way.”
The couple co-founded Opera Music Theatre International, originally based at Newark’s Symphony Hall, which served as an experimental training company for young singers. Miss Evangelista was chief vocal coach and co-artistic director for the group, and was also active in fundraising for it.
She produced numerous galas for the New Jersey State Opera, among them lavish productions at Newark’s Symphony Hall, the Newark Museum, the Meadowlands and the New Jersey Governor’s Mansion in Princeton.
Although she retired from active performing in 1957 to raise her family, Miss Evangelista had lent her talents, free of charge, on several occasions to the New Jersey State Opera in its formative years.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are four sons, David Hines, Andrew Hines, John Heinz and Russell Hines, and 12 grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Monday, October 30, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

George G. Ott, 91
George G. Ott, 91, of Cranford died on Thursday, October 26, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Germany, he had lived in Fanwood before moving to Cranford 44 years ago.
Mr. Ott had been employed as a foreman with DuPont in Arlington for 22 years.
He retired more than 20 years ago from Koppers Company in Carteret after 10 years of service.
He was a member of the New Apostolic Church in Plainfield.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Paula Ehrenberg Ott, and a son, Russell G. Ott of East Brunswick.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 29, at the New Apostolic Church. Interment was private.
The Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, was in charge of the arrangements.

Anne E. Puri, 88
Anne E. Ciampa Puri, 88, of North Plainfield died on Friday, October 27, 2000 at the Villa Maria Health Care Center in North Plainfield.
Born in Brooklyn, she was a lifelong resident of North Plainfield, having moved to the Villa Maria in 1995.
Mrs. Puri had been employed for 12 years as a traffic violations clerk for the Borough of North Plainfield before retiring in 1982.
She was a member of St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield and its Altar Rosary Society, as well as the North Plainfield Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank J. Puri, in 1970, and by a brother, Peter Ciampa, and a sister, Grace Bonzio.
Surviving are a son, Bob Puri of Langhorne, Pa.; a daughter, Mary Introcaso of Parsonsburg, Md.; two brothers, Andrew Ciampa of Moorestown and Anthony Ciampa of South Plainfield; five sisters, Angie Ferrara of Scotch Plains, Geraldine Miele of Parsippany, Lucy Cilano of Altamonte Springs, Fla., Marian Urciuoli of Clark and Mary Rubinetti of North Plainfield; six grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 31, from the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield, followed by a Funeral Mass at St. Joseph Church.
Interment took place at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Northern Regional Chapter, 101 Eisenhower Parkway, Roseland, 07068.

Anthony Iammatteo, 84
Businessman; ‘Mr. Dante’ Launched Tuxedo Stores
Anthony Iammatteo, 84, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, October 27, 2000 at Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown.
Born on March 21, 1916 in Vinchiaturro, Italy, he came to the United States in 1926. He had lived in Staten Island before relocating to Scotch Plains in 1978.
Mr. Iammatteo opened Dante Tuxedos in Linden in 1967. Also known as “Mr. Dante, ” he was the owner of 23 stores in New York and New Jersey at the time of his death.
He had previously worked as a grinder, sharpening knives and scissors, from 1932 to 1967.
Mr. Iammatteo was a member of the San Bernardino Society in Staten Island, the 200 Club of Union County, the American Softball Association of Staten Island and the Bocci Club of Brooklyn.
He was predeceased by three brothers, Vincent Iammatteo, Matthew Iammatteo and Guido Iammatteo.
Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Filomena D’Aquila Iammatteo; a son, Daniel Iammatteo; a daughter, Rose D’Amato; a sister, Carmela Spensieri; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held yesterday, Wednesday, November 1, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a funeral liturgy at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Scotch Plains Volunteer Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 325, Scotch Plains, 07076.

Albert J. Benninger, 91
Had Owned Insurance Company in Mountainside
Albert J. Benninger, 91, of Brick died on Tuesday, October 24, 2000 in Brick Hospital.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Mountainside before relocating to Brick 25 years ago.
Mr. Benninger had owned and operated the Benninger-Tansey Insurance Company in Mountainside for more than 30 years before retiring.
He was a Captain in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War II and a member of the American Legion in Brick.
He served on the Republican State Committee, the Economic Development Commission in Brick and on the Board of Trustees at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, where he was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Mr. Benninger was Director of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders in the 1950s, a Union County Campaign Manager for Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1952 and magistrate for the Borough of Mountainside in the 1940s.
He was one of the first recipients of a nuclear-powered pacemaker at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark and President of the Pacemaker Club in Newark.
Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth Benninger; a son, Peter C. Benninger; a daughter, Mary B. Howard; five grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A Mass was offered on Monday, October 30, in the Epiphany Church in Brick.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Colonial Funeral Home in Brick.

Phillip A. Caivano, 70
Phillip A. Caivano, 70, of Mountainside died on Friday, October 27, 2000 at home.
Born in the Bronx, he had lived in Millburn before moving to Mountainside 35 years ago.
Mr. Caivano had been employed as a steamfitter with the Steamfitters Union Local No. 475 in Warren for 25 years before retiring in 1983.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are two daughters, Mary Louise Harpster and Cynthia Sibley; a sister, Carmena Stoney, and two grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Monday, October 30, at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, after the funeral from Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield.

Gabriel I. Borsellino, Sr., 78
Owner Of Trucking and Towing Companies
Gabriel I. Borsellino, Sr., 78, of Mountainside died on Friday, October 27, 2000 in St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston.
Born in Venice, Italy, he had lived in Newark before moving to Mountainside 50 years ago.
Mr. Borsellino was the founder, owner and President of G. and J. Freightliner of Newark Trucking Company for 45 years.
He was also the owner and President of Triangle Towing Service in Newark.
He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II, having served as a Sergeant in Panama.
He was predeceased by a son, Gabriel R. Borsellino, and by a brother, John Borsellino. Surviving are his wife, Assunta Fabbricatore Borsellino; two daughters, Judy Borsellino and Sue Chillemi; two sons, Mario Borsellino and Ray Borsellino; a sister, Lillian Markovitch; a brother, Lou Borsellino; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Monday, October 30, at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, following the funeral from the Haeberle & Barth Colonial Home in Union.
