Vincent Morris, 82
Vincent Morris, 82, of Fanwood died on Thursday, January 6, 2000 at the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network in Westfield.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived there before moving to Fanwood 45 years ago.
Mr. Morris had been a lab assistant with Bell Labs in Murray Hill for over 30 years before retiring in 1981.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific.
Surviving are his wife, La Vera M. Long Morris of Fanwood.
Funeral services were held on Friday, January 7, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Louise Loeffler, 78
Louise Loeffler, 78, of Westfield died on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 in Metuchen at the home of her daughter, Patricia A. Slavinski.
Born in Brooklyn, Mrs. Loeffler moved to Westfield 52 years ago.
Also surviving are two other daughters, Anne Marie Jones and Denise C. Cherepanya; two sons, Edward Loeffler and Michael Loeffler; three sisters, Josephine Olin, Eleanor Horner and Claire DeMartino; four brothers, Tige Kassuf, George Kassuf, Louis Kassuf and Sam Kassuf; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Friday, January 7, in St. Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen, following the funeral from the Costello-Runyon Funeral Home in Metuchen.
Darnell Lloyd, Jr., 63
Darnell “Harold” Lloyd, Jr., 63, of Fanwood died on Sunday, January 2, 2000 in Rahway Hospital.
Born in Newark, he moved to Fanwood in 1971.
Mr. Lloyd had owned the Harold Holding Realty Company in Fanwood and its subsidiary companies, including the Berckman Deli in Plainfield, the 518 Club in Newark and the Ridgewood Bar in Newark, before retiring in 1987.
Surviving are his wife, Ophelia Lloyd; two daughters, Pamela Lloyd and Regina Reese; two sons, Darnell H. Lloyd, 3rd and Patterson Reese, and five grandchildren.
Services were held on Wednesday, January 5, in the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Helen A. Ginder, 88
Helen A. Ginder, 88, of Edgewater, Fla. died on Tuesday, January 4, 2000 in the Ocean View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Born in Catasauqua, Pa., she had lived in Fanwood before relocating to Edgewater four years ago.
Surviving are two sons, Paul Ginder and Robert Ginder; a daughter, Bernice Osborne; a brother, Adam Pavol; a sister, Anne La Pay; three grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Wednesday, January 5, in St. Nicholas Byzantine Church in Dunellen.
The funeral was from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Ruth C. Grander
Ruth C. Colton Grander of Westfield died on Thursday, December 30, 1999 in the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Orange, she lived in Westfield for 32 years. Mrs. Grander had been a secretary at Westfield High School for seven years before retiring in 1975.
She was predeceased by her husband, Fred Grander.
Surviving are two daughters, Susan Geddis and Patricia Coogan; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held in the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield on Sunday, January 2.
Memorial donations may be made to the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center Staff Fund, 35 Cottage Street, Berkeley Heights, 07922.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Brough Funeral Home in Summit.
Dr. Joseph P. Greeley, 77
Pathologist; Received Distinguished Service Award
Dr. Joseph P. Greeley, 77, of Westfield died on Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at home.
Born in Scranton, Pa., he moved to Westfield 46 years ago.
Dr. Greeley had been a pathologist with Elizabeth General Medical Center in Elizabeth for more than 30 years before retiring in 1987.
He was also the head of the school for technicians at the medical center and taught medical technicians at Union County Technical School in Scotch Plains.
Dr. Greeley was a member of the medical staff of Marlboro Psychiatric Hospital and Runnells Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights.
He graduated from the University of Scranton in 1943 and from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia in 1947.
He interned from 1947 to 1948 at Scranton State Hospital and completed his residency by working at Mercer County Hospital in Trenton, Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia and the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology in Washington, D. C.
He served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean Conflict.
Dr. Greeley was a fellow in the College of American Pathologists.
He was a Past President of the New Jersey Society of Pathologists and the medical board of Elizabeth General Medical Center.
He received a distinguished service award in 1986 from the Elizabeth General Medical Center Foundation for practicing medicine.
Surviving are his wife, Elsie L. Greeley; two sons, J. Paul Greeley, Jr. and Lawrence Greeley, and a sister, Anna Mae Buckelew.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, January 8, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
The funeral was from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Evelyn Gottlick, 92
Sang With USO; Was Great-Grandmother of 49
Evelyn M. Nelson Gottlick, 92, of Westfield died on Wednesday, January 5, 2000 in Morristown Memorial Hospital in Morristown.
Born and raised in Cokato, Minn., she lived in Westfield since 1933.
Mrs. Gottlick had been employed as a receptionist for Burry Biscuit Company in Elizabeth for 15 years, retiring in 1990.
She was a professional singer in the metropolitan area and performed with USO shows during World War II at United States Army installations in New Jersey.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. Gottlick.
Surviving are a son, Richard C. Gottlick of Westfield; two daughters, Patricia B. Markey of Scotch Plains, and Geraldine E. Mielach of Pottersville; a sister, Vivian Soper of California; a brother, Eugene Bollman of California; 23 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, January 8, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
The Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield, was in charge of the arrangements.
Memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Robert Wendell Bender, 80
Manager; Was Active With Local Organizations
Robert Wendell Bender, 80, of Fanwood died on Thursday, January 6, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born and raised in Westfield, he lived in Fanwood since 1954.
Mr. Bender had been Manager of the Benelux service of United States Lines in New York City for many years.
He later became Manager of Regulatory Affairs for Gdynia-America Lines.
He was a graduate of Westfield High School and of Colby College in Waterville, Me.
Mr. Bender served overseas with the 11th Air Force during World War II.
He was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution; Westfield Chapter No. 4137 of the American Association of Retired Persons and Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He was also a member of the Fanwood Board of Elections.
Surviving are his wife, Jeanne Gilbert Bender; two sons, James Bender of Fanwood and Daniel Bender of Trumbull, Conn., and three grandsons.
He was predeceased by his parents, Stacey and Mary Preston Bender; two brothers, Stacey Bender, Jr. and Preston Bender, and a sister, Ruth Bender Silber.
A memorial service was held on Sunday, January 9, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
