George D. Eggleston
Mr. Eggleston, 70, of Red Bank died Nov. 22 at home. Born in Martinsville, Va.., he had been a resident of Red Bank since 1969. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Defense, Fort Monmouth. He also retired from the U.S. Army with the rank of sergeant first class after 20 years of service. He was a member of Monmouth Grace United Methodist Church, Eatontown. He was predeceased by a sister, Betty Petrillo. He is survived by his wife, Yon I. Pak Eggleston of Eatontown; two sons and daughters-in-law, James W. and Ruth Eggleston of Eatontown, and Robert and Laura Eggleston of Rialto, Calif.; a daughter, Corie A. Eggleston of Edison; two brothers, Warren Eggleston and Bob Eggleston, both of Detroit; and three grandchildren. A funeral service was held at Grace United Methodist Church, Eatontown. Interment
was at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. The Braun Funeral Home, Eatontown, was in charge of arrangements.
Walter P. Ryan
Mr. Ryan, 83, of Monmouth Beach died Nov. 29 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Keansburg, he resided there prior to moving to Monmouth Beach 10 years ago. He was a retired pari-mutuel clerk at New Jersey Sports and Expedition/Meadowlands, East Rutherford, where he was employed for 10 years. Prior to that, he worked at Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport; owned and operated the Berkshire Hotel, Keansburg; and owned and raced thoroughbred horses in the 1970s. He was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. He was the former vice president of Local No. 137, Cherry Hill. He was predeceased by his wife, Jane Mallon Ryan in 1990; his sister, Emma Hgromoho; and his brothers, Edward Ryan and Richard Ryan. He is survived by two daughters, Linda E. Ryan and Jeannine M. Ryan, both of Monmouth Beach; two sisters-in-law; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral liturgy was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. Arrangements were by John F. Desmond R. "Desi" Shanley
Mr. Shanley, 74, of Red Bank died Nov. 2 at home. Born in Jersey City, he resided there and in Rumson before moving to Red Bank. He was general organizer and serviced the Ironworker’s District Council of Greater New York before retiring in 1994. He began his career as an ironworker in 1954, serving as a member of New York Local 40, and business agent and president of Local 170, New York City. He was also a professional boxer who finished his career with more than 70 victories, and was inducted into the New Jersey Boxing Hall of Fame in 1989. He served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was a communicant and usher at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. He enjoyed golf and gardening. He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Helen Shanley of Red Bank; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Felicia and Roy Edwards of Neptune, Danielle Shanley of Highlands, Sue and Tom Schroll of Red Bank, and Michelle Shanley of San Francisco; three brothers, Raymond Shanley of Bayonne, the Rev. Kevin O’Carm of Darien, Ill., and Michael Shanley of Jersey City; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Ann Marie and Robert Brooks of Centerville, Mass., and Colleen and Lester Jennings of Eatontown; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Charles A. Valentino Sr.
Mr. Valentino, 79, of West Long Branch died Nov. 8 at home. He resided in Long Branch prior to moving to West Long Branch 40 years ago. He and his family owned and operated Valentino’s Market, Long Branch, which opened in 1925. He served with the U.S. Army under Gen. George S. Patton during World War II. His numerous awards included the Purple Heart for wounds received during the Battle of the Bulge, Distinguished Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal and American Campaign Medal. He was a communicant of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. A disabled American veteran, he was a member of the Long Branch Old Guard and a life member of the Long Branch Elks Lodge No. 742. He was a 53-year member and past president of the Long Branch Green and White Association, which awarded him a lifetime membership in 1988. Mr. Valentino is survived by his wife, Angela Rose Scarano Valentino; a son, Charles A. Valentino Jr. of Long Branch; a brother, Louis Valentino of West Long Branch; and several nieces and nephews. Theodore C. Sari
Mr. Sari, 87, of Tinton Falls died Oct. 27 at Seabrook Village, Tinton Falls. Born in West Orange, he resided in Howell Township for more than 25 years before moving to Tinton Falls two years ago. He was a warehouse manager at Marine Drive Systems, Edison, retiring 25 years ago. Prior to that, he operated Sari’s Main Street Cleaners, East Orange, for 26 years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Freehold. He was past president of the Freehold Kiwanis Club, and member of the Deborah Hospital Auxiliary and Local No. 151 American Federation of Musicians. He enjoyed bowling and playing the saxophone and clarinet. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor Finn Sari of Tinton Falls; two daughters, Carol Andrews of Middletown, and Gail Kennedy of Mifflintown, Pa.; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A memorial service was at Seabrook town square auditorium, Tinton Falls. Arrangements were by Higgins Memorial Home, Freehold. Anthony J. Savarese
Mr. Savarese, 79, of Oceanport, died Oct. 23 at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided there prior to moving to Oceanport 20 years ago. He was a stockbroker at Adams and Peck, New York City, and at various area brokerage firms, retiring 14 years ago. He was a parishioner of Precious Blood Roman Catholic Church, Monmouth Beach, and St. Joan of Arc, Fort Monmouth. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Brooklyn. Mr. Savarese is survived by his wife of 51 years, Constance Allegra Savarese; three sons and daughters-in-law, Philip J. and Susan Savarese of Manahawkin, Joseph A. and Kathleen Savarese of Jupiter, Fla., and Michael A. and Rachel Savarese of Oceanport; a sister and brother-in-law, Theresa and Jack Ronan of Brick; and five grandsons. Chrystal E. Jinks Kopp
Mrs. Kopp, 80, of Middletown died Nov. 12 at St. Barnabas Hospice at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Castlehill, Maine, she resided in Middletown the past 60 years. She was the owner/operator of Salon 36, East Keansburg, for 20 years. She was a past member of Bayshore Community Church, Middletown, as well as a member of its board of trustees. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Lucille and Peter Horbach of Tampa, Fla.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Harold and Joan Kopp of the Leonardo section of Middletown, and Larry and Beth Kopp of Ocean; two brothers and one sister-in-law, William and Mary Jinks of Churdan, Iowa, and Leland Jinks of Zephyrhills, Fla.; her sister-in-law, Mary Kopp of Middletown; and four grandchildren. Meade Robertson
Mr. Robertson, 48, of Green Island, Toms River, died Oct. 13 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Born in Long Branch, he grew up in Highlands where he attended Henry Hudson Regional High School. Mr. Robertson was a chef at the Brielle Inn for 10 years, and was a landscaper/heavy equipment operator for LuMar Landscape Contractors/Calgo Garden, Toms River, for the past 20 years. A former resident of Brick, he was a member of the Green Island (Toms River) Community Association and participated in Toms River East Little League. Mr. Robertson enjoyed gardening and music, especially the Blues, and played the guitar. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Linda Robertson; his son, Conner; his mother, Edith Robertson of Highlands; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Sylvia and William Schloeder of Atlantic Highlands, Susan and Herb Brooks of Jamestown, N.Y., Sheri and Richard Briggs of Sugar Grove, Pa., Nedra Warren of Boston, and Myra Robertson of Highlands; three brothers and one sister-in-law, Rob and Makie Robertson, and Roger and Richard Robertson, all of Highlands; as well as many nieces and nephews. Geraldine "Gerry" E. McGuire
Mrs. McGuire, 80, of Eatontown died Oct. 8 at King James Care Center, Middletown. Born in West Pittston, Pa., she resided in Little Silver prior to moving to Eatontown 10 years ago. Mrs. McGuire was an area Realtor for several years, as well as a homemaker. She was a former member of the Officers Club, Fort Monmouth, and was an avid golfer with the Officers' Wives Club. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph J. McGuire, in 1996; and a son, Terrance McGuire, in 1995. She is survived by four sons and two daughters-in-law, Edward McGuire of Worcester, Mass., Kevin and Maureen McGuire of Downingtown, Pa., Daniel J. and Melissa McGuire of Little Silver, and Joseph McGuire of Ithaca, N.Y.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Dr. John Ziegler of Ithaca, and Ann and Tom Murdock of Rumson; a brother, Carl Borr of Yuba City, Calif.; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Dobias, 71, of the Parlin section of Sayreville, formerly of Long Branch, died Oct. 18 at home. Surviving are her husband, Richard S. Dobias; a daughter, Susan Wassel of South Plainfield; two sons, Dr. Richard J. Dobias of Hanover Township, Pa., and Brian R.
