Elsie M. Thomas, 71
Former Teacher Held Bachelor and Master Degrees
Elsie May Thomas, 71, of Plainfield, Ill., died on Sunday, October 29, 2000 in the home of her daughter, Lisa Plaskett, in Plainfield, Ill.
Born in Orange, she had lived in Newark, West Orange, Westfield, Pittsford, N.Y. and Chicago before moving to Plainfield, Ill., in 1991.
Mrs. Thomas had been a high school teacher at Pittsford Mendon High School in Pittsford, N.Y., before retiring in 1991.
Prior to that, she had taught elementary school in Livingston.
She received a bachelor’s degree from the New Jersey College for Women in New Brunswick and master’s degrees from Newark State Teachers College in Newark and from the Nazareth College of Rochester in New York.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter, is a brother, Irving Trygg.
Services were held on Monday, November 6, in the Trinity Covenant Church in Livingston.
Arrangements were handled by the Reilly Funeral Home in Belmar.
Vivian Wilson
Was Teacher’s Aide; Member of Local Seniors’ Groups
Vivian Alice Wilson of Fanwood died on Tuesday, October 31, 2000 at her home.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Elmhurst, Queens before moving to Fanwood in 1956.
Mrs. Wilson had been a teacher’s aide at McGinn Elementary School in Scotch Plains before retiring in 1979.
She was a member of the Fanwood Senior Citizens group and the Catholic Golden Agers of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harold C. Wilson, in 1975. Surviving are two sons, Harold “Cliff” Wilson and Richard Wilson; two daughters, Vivian “Betty” D’Antuono and Kathy DeChellis; two sisters, Frances Holmes and Edith Manley; 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 3, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
Interment took place at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus.

Thomas P. Rafferty, Sr., 82
Worked At American Cyanamid For 43 Years
Thomas P. Rafferty, Sr., 82, of Piscataway died on Wednesday, November 1, 2000 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born and raised in North Plainfield, he had lived in Bound Brook and Raritan before relocating to Piscataway 32 years ago.
Mr. Rafferty had been a chemical operator before his retirement, having worked for American Cyanamid in Bridgewater for 43 years.
He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Piscataway and a member of the Piscataway Senior Citizens.
He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II.
He was predeceased by a brother, John “Hip” Rafferty, and by a sister, Mary Paulina.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Kovacs Rafferty; a son, Thomas Rafferty, Jr. of Piscataway; two daughters, Jackie Tickerhoff of Piscataway and Janet Batha of Brick Township; three sisters, Margaret Shea of Scotch Plains, Ann Kauffman of Atlantic Highlands and Winifred Blume of Lake Worth, Fla., and four grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday, November 4, at the Scarpa Funeral Home in North Plainfield, followed by a Mass at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
Interment took place at Resurrection Mausoleum in Piscataway.
Robert J. Lambertsen, 81
Had Been Aerial Photographer in World War II
Robert J. Lambertsen, 81, of Manahawkin died on Friday, November 3, 2000 at Southern Ocean County Hospital in Manahawkin.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in Fanwood before relocating to Cedar Bonnet Island in Manahawkin in 1988.
Mr. Lambertsen had been employed in the Telemetrics Department unit at the Elizabethtown Water Company until his retirement in 1984 after more than 30 years of service.
He served in the United States Army Air Corp from 1942 to 1945.
Mr. Lambertsen was an aerial photographer and radio operator on a B24 Liberator Bomber based in North Africa.
While returning from a raid over the Balkans, his plane developed engine trouble near Istanbul and was fired upon and forced to land in Turkey, after which Mr. Lambertsen was interned for a brief time.
He was a member of the Scotch Plains Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife of 56 years, Louise Hendricks Lambertsen; two sons, Robert Lambertsen and Kim Lambertsen, both of Fanwood; a brother, Edward Lambertsen of Manahawkin, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 7, at the Scotch Plains Baptist Church. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Judith Howard, 50
Judith Howard, 50, of Fanwood died on Thursday, November 2, 2000 at home.
Miss Howard was an electronic assembler at Datatek in Mountainside.
Surviving are her mother, Ammie Howard; two daughters, Darlene Howard and Elisa Howard; a sister, Mary Alers; two brothers, Ernest Green, Jr. and Mark Green, and three grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, November 6, in Warren’s Temple Church of the Living God in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.
Bertha Charters, 85
Had Been Active With Westfield P. T. A. and Cub Scouts
Bertha Marie Charters, 85, of Westfield died on Saturday, November 4, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in New York City, she lived in Westfield for the past 56 years.
Mrs. Charters was a homemaker and also helped her husband run the family business, Charters Refrigeration & Air Conditioning, in Westfield for 35 years.
She was a member of the Westfield Parent Teacher Association and was a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts of America.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur R. Charters; two sons, Richard E. Charters of Vienna, Va. and John A. Charters of Westfield; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Graveside services took place yesterday, Wednesday, November 8, at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Elmhurst, Queens.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Edward J. Jeuther, Jr., 94
Recognized For Service to Youth Through Scouting
Edward J. Jeuther, Jr., 94, died on Thursday, November 2, 2000 in the ManorCare Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Mountainside.
Born in Brooklyn, he had lived in Westfield for many years before moving to Mountainside 20 years ago.
Mr. Jeuther had been the owner and President of Jeuther and Company of New York City, a bond broker firm, for 50 years before retiring in 1990.
He received the YMCA Award for Outstanding Leadership Service.
He also was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation from Troop No. 86 of St. Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Clark.
Mr. Jeuther, who was a swim instructor for the Boy Scouts, received the St. George Emblem in 1970 in recognition for outstanding service to the spiritual development of Catholic youth in the Boy Scout program.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Henrietta Jeuther.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret Panfilio White Jeuther, and four stepchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Saturday, November 4, in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment took place in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
David Gordon, 89
Former Area Resident; Was Owner of City Electric in Newark
David Gordon, 89, of Plainsboro died on Sunday, October 29, 2000 in the Forrestal Nursing Home in Plainsboro.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Westfield and Scotch Plains before moving to Plainsboro a year ago.
Mr. Gordon had owned City Electric on Mulberry Street in Newark for many years before retiring five years ago.
He had also worked at Electrical Motor Sales in Roselle for many years.
Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Shirley Gordon; a son, Ralph Gordon; a daughter, Nancy Baumer; a brother, Michael Zamat, and three grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Wednesday, November 1, at Beth Israel Cemetery in Woodbridge.
Mount Sinai Memorial Chapels in East Brunswick was in charge of the arrangements.
