Dr. Peter Carosella, 37
Gastroenterologist Had Served Several Local Hospitals
Dr. Peter J. Carosella, 37, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, December 16, 1998 in Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Born in The Bronx, he had lived in Bloomfield and in Dumont before moving to Scotch Plains four years ago.
Dr. Carosella was an attending physician at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Union Hospital, Rahway Hospital and Elizabeth General Medical Center from 1993 to 1997.
He graduated from Rutgers University in Newark with a degree in biology in 1983, and received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 1988.
He became board certified in internal medicine in 1992, and in gastroenterology the following year.
Dr. Carosella completed his gastroenterology fellowship in 1993.
He had been Chief Resident at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center from 1990 to 1991.
Dr. Carosella was a member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American College of Gastroenterology, the New Jersey Medical Society, the Union County Medical Association, and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Carosella; his parents, Peter and Marie Carosella, and a sister, Lynn Carosella.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, December 21, in St. Raphael’s Church in Livingston.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Quinn-Hopping Funeral Home in Livingston.

Madeleine Naething, 99
CSH Supporter; Figure on Golf Circuit During 1920s-’30s
Madeleine Louise Naething, 99, of Westfield died on Friday, December 18, 1998 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in England on May 25, 1899, she had moved to Bayonne at age nine. She settled in Westfield in 1914.
Mrs. Naething played on the golf circuit during the 1920s and 1930s with Babe Didrikson Zaharias, the first female golf professional. She had been a fundraiser for Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside for 35 years before retiring in 1975.
Mrs. Naething was a member of the altar guild of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield, the Woman’s Exchange, and the Ladies Professional Golf Association. She also was a volunteer at the Westfield Day Care Center for 15 years.
She was predeceased by her husband, Herman Emile Naething in 1969, and her daughter, Mary Louise Buehler, in 1990.
Surviving are two sons, Arthur Naething of Westfield and Robert Naething of Benbrook, Texas; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 21, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, Box E, 1275 York Avenue, New York, 10021.

Jessie Smallwood, 56
Was Specialist In Infection Control and Detection
Jessie R. Smallwood, 56, of West Orange died on Thursday, December 17, 1998 at home.
Born in Newport News, Virginia, she had lived in Newark and in Scotch Plains before moving to West Orange nine years ago.
Mrs. Smallwood was employed by University Hospital in Newark for 27 years, first as a medical technologist and, for the past 17 years, as a practitioner in infection control and prevention.
Her responsibilities in the latter capacity included conducting programs for detection, recording, analysis and reporting of hospital-acquired and other infectious diseases at the hospital’s 530-bed acute care facility, New Jersey Trauma Center, National Tuberculosis Center, the New Jersey Dental School and The Stone Center. She prepared monthly reports on infection for the entire hospital.
Mrs. Smallwood served as Acting Director for infection control in 1988 and 1989, and also helped develop infection control procedures which she taught to staff members.
Prior to joining the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, she had been a medical technologist in the immunology and hematology departments at Seton Hall University Medical School and at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
Mrs. Smallwood was awarded a bachelor’s degree in community and health education from Jersey City State College, a medical technology diploma from Lyons Institute for Medical Technologies in Newark, and several state and national professional certifications, including state board certification in infection control in 1992.
Mrs. Smallwood was a member of the Association for Practitioners in Infection Control, North New Jersey Chapter; the New Jersey Public Health Association, the Union County Coalition for Healthcare and Prevention, and the Minority Health Council at University Hospital.
She was also a member of the Women of Trinity St. Phillips Cathedral and President of the St. Ann’s Guild, a cathedral affiliate.
Surviving are two sons, Kevin Smallwood and Gregory Smallwood; her parents, Emmett and Sarah Reynolds; a sister, Joan F. Henderson, and three brothers, Emmett Reynolds, Jr., Marion Reynolds and Alonzo Reynolds, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, December 21, in the Trinity St. Phillips Cathedral.
Arrangements were handled by the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark.

Herbert J. Haslam, 75
Herbert John Haslam, 75, of Charlotte, North Carolina, formerly of Westfield, died on Wednesday, December 16, 1998 at his home.
Born on July 17, 1923, in Weehawken, he was the son of the late Herbert and Harriet Kendrick Haslam.
Mr. Haslam was educated at Blair Academy and at Lehigh University.
He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
A member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Charlotte, Mr. Haslam also was a founding partner and President of Comp-Air & Equipment, Inc.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Ann Maxwell Haslam; two daughters, Cynthia H. Graham of Baltimore and Nancy Gooch of Cincinnati, Ohio; a son, John K. Haslam of Charlotte; a sister, Jean H. Connell of Spain, and four granddaughters.
He was predeceased by his brother, George H. Haslam.
A memorial service was held on Friday, December 18, at the Christ Episcopal Church, with the Reverend Martha Hedgpeth officiating.
Interment was to take place in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Harry and Bryant Company.

Shirley Telgarecz, 80
Shirley B. Telgarecz, 80, of the Rossmoor section of Monroe Township, died on Friday, December 18, 1998 in Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Union and Westfield before moving to Monroe Township 12 years ago.
Mrs. Telgarecz was a former member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield and a greeter at the Rossmoor Community Church.
She was a member of the Garden Club and the Guild of Rossmoor.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Telgarecz, and a brother, Larry Boehm.
Surviving are a daughter, Shirleyanne Varn of Durham, North Carolina; a sister, Florence Bell of Leonardo; two grandsons and a great-grandson.
A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, December 22, at the Rossmoor Community Church in Jamesburg, with the Reverend Edward Schulte officiating.
Interment took place at the Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the A. S. Cole Funeral Home in Cranbury.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Rossmoor Community Church, Village Mall, Jamesburg, 08831.

Arthur G. Poppele, 85
Arthur G. Poppele, 85, of Bradenton, Florida died on Wednesday, December 16, 1998 at Manatee Memorial Hospital in Bradenton.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Bradenton.
Mr. Poppele was a technical director for the National Broadcasting Company (NBC).
He was a member of NBC’s Peacock North and the River Isles Golf Club and Homeowners Association.
Surviving are his wife, Billie Poppele; two sons, Kenneth Poppele and Donald Poppele; a sister, Dorothy McCain; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held on Saturday, December 19, in the Manatee United Methodist Church in Bradenton.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Griffith-Cline Funeral Home in Bradenton.

Vincenza Romeo, 63
Vincenza (Nancy) Romeo, 63, of Westfield died on Sunday, December 20, 1998 at Union Hospital in Union.
Born in Formicola, Italy, she came to the United States in 1958, settling in Westfield.
Mrs. Romeo was a homemaker. She was a parishioner at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Surviving are her husband, John Romeo; a son, Rocco Romeo of Westfield; three daughters, Mimma Reilly of Bridgewater, Rosemarie Makris of Plainfield and Jane Romeo of Basking Ridge, and four grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, December 23, at 10 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Church.
Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, 200A Cottontail Lane, Somerset, 08873, or to the American Kidney Fund, 6110 Executive Boulevard, Rockville, Maryland, 20852.

Henry Cody, 61
Was Army Veteran; Truck Driver for Jersey Millwork
Henry Cody, 61, of Plainfield died on Sunday, December 20, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born and raised in Jersey City, he moved to Plainfield in 1971.
Mr. Cody had been a truck driver for Jersey Millwork in Newark for more than 25 years.
He was a warehouseman at Middlesex Lumber and Supply Company in Middlesex for the past 10 years.
He was a United States Army veteran.
He was predeceased by his brother, William L. Cody, in 1995.
Surviving are his wife, Magnolia Arrington; two sons, William H. Cody of Edison and Steven Cody of Westfield; a daughter, Bunnie Cody of New Brunswick; a brother, Leroy Cody of Jersey City; three sisters, Lucille Johnson and Bessie Cody, both of Jersey City, and Ola Johnson of Newtonville, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 28, at 11 a.m. at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, December 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
