Raymond Curley, 94
Retired Salesman; Had Been Tennis Champ During 1920s
Raymond Larkin Curley, 94, of Shrewsbury died on Sunday, November 19, 2000 at home.
Born in Hoboken on September 24, 1906, he had lived in East Orange, Newark and in Westfield before moving to Shrewsbury in 1972.
A graduate of Hoboken High School, he subsequently became a local tennis champion in East Orange in 1923.
Mr. Curley had been a salesman for Remington Rand Corporation in Newark for many years before retiring in 1971.
He was a member of the Red Bank Old Guard before the organization disbanded in 1998.
He was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church in Red Bank.
He was predeceased by his parents, John J. and Catherine Elliot Curley; a sister, Dorothy Brady, and a brother, John E. Curley.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Mary Trelease Curley; a son, John Curley of Summit; six daughters, Mary Pat Hollenbach of Little Silver, Helen Price of Westfield, Peggy Carleton of East Windsor, Kathy Biersack of Brick, Rita Stutzman of Treasure Island, Fla. and Jane Rosenberger of Ventnor; 27 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Wednesday, November 22, in St. James Roman Catholic Church. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the John E. Day Funeral Home in Red Bank.

Jean Martinez, 86, of Westfield died on Wednesday, November 15, 2000 at home.
Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Westfield since 1984.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Cutro; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, November 18, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, following the funeral from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Emmanuella Pontoni, 73
Had Taught Culinary Arts at Business and Schools
Mae Emmanuella Pontoni, 73, of Bethlehem, Pa., died on Thursday, November 16, 2000 in Kirkland Village in Bethlehem.
Born in Cleveland, she had lived in Westfield before relocating to Bethlehem in 1991.
Mrs. Pontoni had been a culinary instructor and caterer at Strawberry Kitchen in Westfield for 10 years before retiring in 1988.
She was also a culinary arts teacher in Union County schools.
She attended John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio.
She was a member of the women’s club, senior group and friendship club at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bethlehem.
Surviving are her husband, Arthur Pontoni; three daughters, Nancy Fleming, Margaret Meyers and Mary Lou Steele, and five grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Monday, November 20, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Bethlehem.
Arrangements were handled by the Connell Funeral Home in Bethlehem.
Thomas M. Gibney, 82
Thomas Matthew Gibney, 82, of Mountainside died on Friday, November 17, 2000 at home.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Mountainside 38 years ago.
Mr. Gibney had worked for the American Abrasive Metals Company in Irvington for 51 years before retiring as a sales manager in 1989.
He received an associate’s degree in criminal justice from Union County College in 1994, at the age of 76.
Mr. Gibney was an honorary member of the Mountainside Police Benevolent Association and the Aviation Boatswain’s Mates Association, where he served as Chaplain.
In August, he became the first recipient of the Honorary Living Legend Award presented by the Aviation Boatswain’s Mates Association.
He served as an usher at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Gibney; two daughters, Mary Lu Korkuch and Tommie Ann Gibney, and a grandchild.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday, November 21, in the Chapel at Mount St. Mary Academy in Watchung.
Arrangements were under the direction of Smith and Smith (Suburban) in Springfield.
Betty N. Bernatt, 82
Betty Nettie Bernatt, 82, of Lakewood died on Thursday, November 16, 2000 in Jackson Health Care in Jackson.
Born in Roselle, she had lived in Westfield before relocating to Lakewood 50 years ago.
Surviving are two sons, George Bernatt and Ron Bernatt; a daughter, Karen Ryder; a brother, Mike Druzek; three sisters, Mary Underwood, Dolores Politz and Eve Donahue, and a grandchild.
Private services were arranged by the Lakewood Funeral Home in Howell.
Catherine Holmes, 63
Catherine Holmes, 63, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, November 16, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., she had lived in Brooklyn before relocating to Scotch Plains 23 years ago.
Mrs. Holmes was a supervisor with the United States Postal Service in Brooklyn, where she worked for 27 years.
She was also a salesperson with Sears Roebuck & Company in Watchung for five years.
She was a member of the Fountain Baptist Church of Summit and of Rebecca Chapter No. 1 of Order of the Eastern Star in Plainfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Holmes, in July.
Surviving are a daughter, Pamela F. Mason of Fresh Meadows, Long Island, N.Y.; two sisters, Lottie Williams and Mary Louise Jinks, both of Atlanta, and a granddaughter.
Services were held on Monday, November 20, at the Fountain Baptist Church.
The Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert E. Ancipink, 70
Architect; Local Soccer and Baseball Coach
Robert Edward Ancipink, 70, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, August 19, 2000 at Rahway Hospital in Rahway.
Born in Jersey City, he had moved to Fanwood in 1966 and recently relocated to Scotch Plains.
Mr. Ancipink had formerly been employed as an architect By Karel Philipp, AIA in Union and by M. Alfieri Company in Iselin.
He worked independently most recently.
He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1955 and his Master of Science Degree in 1957, both in architecture, from Pratt Institute in New York City.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
A soccer and baseball coach, Mr. Ancipink had served as President of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Soccer Association.
He was also a member of the Watchung Amateur Ski Club for more than 30 years.
Mr. Ancipink was a former board member of the American Youth Hostel and volunteered his services as an architect to renovate hostels in the United States and Europe.
He sang with the Choral Arts Society of New Jersey in Westfield and was a former member of the church choir at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Patricia Coyle Ancipink of Bedminster; three sons, Mark Ancipink of San Francisco, Rob Ancipink of Remsenburg, N.Y., and Patrick Ancipink of Austin, Tex., and a grandson.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, August 23, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Raymond F. Obrock, 88
Was Attorney For Exxon-Mobile Corp. for 30 Years
Raymond F. Obrock, 88, of Westfield died on Sunday, August 20, 2000 at the Masonic Home of New Jersey in Burlington.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he had lived in Bayonne for 25 years and then in Cranford before moving to Westfield.
Mr. Obrock had been an attorney for the Exxon-Mobile Corporation in New York City for 30 years before retiring in 1968.
He was a Master Mason of the Free and Accepted Masons Azure Lodge No. 129 in Cranford.
He was also a member of the Exxon Annuitant Club and the New York University Annuitant Club, both in New York City.
He did his undergraduate studies at New York University in New York City and received his law degree from Brooklyn Law School.
He was predeceased by his wife, Emma Rose Lasko Obrock, in 1998, and by a son, Raymond Obrock, in 1950.
Surviving are a son, Frederick Obrock of Scotch Plains; a sister, Cleorah Dick of Bridgewater, and a granddaughter.
A funeral service was held at the Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue in Cranford, yesterday, Wednesday, August 23.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
