Mauro Cantu, 63, of San Antonio, Tex. died on Thursday, November 9, 2000 in a San Antonio hospital.
Born in San Antonio, he had lived in Paris, Montclair and Westfield before returning to San Antonio three years ago.
Mr. Cantu had owned the Adelitas Restaurant in Montclair for three and a half years until 1993.
He had also owned a restaurant in Paris during the 1980s.
Surviving are a son, Lucio Cantu; two daughters, Rose Cantu Moro and Joann Cantu; two sisters, Mary J. Garcia and Olivia Cantu; a brother, Hector Cantu, and eight grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, November 13, in the D’Angelus Funeral Home in San Antonio.
Valentino Scipioni, Sr., 63
Carpenter For Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill
Valentino Scipioni, Sr., 63, of Garwood died on Sunday, November 12, 2000 at home.
Born in Alvi, Italy, he came to the United States in 1962 and had lived in Westfield before moving to Garwood 27 years ago.
Mr. Scipioni was a carpenter for Lucent Technologies in Murray Hill.
He was a member of the Communications Workers of America in Murray Hill and of the Italian-American clubs in Scotch Plains and Westfield.
Surviving are his wife, Caterina Scipioni; a son, Valentino Scipioni, Jr.; four daughters, Lorenza Valles, Patricia Juliano, Marisa Scipioni-Duva and Diana Parra; his mother, Caterina Mazzilli; three brothers, Bruno Scipioni, Michele Scipioni and Giovanni Scipioni; two sisters, Albina Palumbi and Santina Mazzilli, and eight grandchildren.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, November 15, in St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood, following the funeral from the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Joan R. Picurro
Joan R. Picurro of Scotch Plains died on Friday, November 10, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Hoboken before moving to Scotch Plains in 1971.
Mrs. Picurro was a homemaker. She was predeceased by a son, Thomas Picurro.
Surviving are her husband, Aniello Picurro; three sons, John Picurro, Neil Picurro and Francis Picurro; two daughters, Niobe Vangelakos and Lucia Wilkens; her brother, Walter Rushalski, and eight grandchildren.
A funeral Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, November 15, at St. Bernard’s Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Betty (Rebecca) Felton Sauerbrun
Betty Sauerbrun, 85, died peacefully November 12, 2000 in her home in Westfield after a brief illness.
Mrs. Sauerbrun was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1914, the only child of Stephen Jacob and Susanna Humphreys Felton.
Mr. Felton was a metallurgist, professor at the University of Cincinnati and a talented portrait artist. Susanna held a bachelor’s degree of fine arts.
Mrs. Sauerbrun’s grandfather, William Humphreys, was a curator at the Cincinnati Art Museum and Professor of Art at the University of Cincinnati.
Betty married Willard Edward Sauerbrun of Elizabeth in 1945 when they moved to Westfield. Mr. Sauerbrun predeceased Betty in 1999.
Mrs. Sauerbrun received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and her master’s in Educational Foundations from the University of Cincinnati, where she received the Phi Beta Kappa Key and was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma.
She served as President of the Women’s Athletic Association.
Voted the most outstanding female graduate in her class of 1937, she was given the distinguished CRing Award. She was a member of the Mortar Board, an academic and leadership honorary organization.
Mrs. Sauerbrun was well known for her involvement in and contributions to many community organizations.
She held membership in or was affiliated with the Westfield Service League, the College Women’s Club of Westfield, The Service Club, the Women’s Club, Echo Lake Country Club, Highland Swim Club, the Westfield Tennis Club, the Fourth Monday Duplicate Bridge Group, the PTA, YMCA and The Silver Bay Association.
Mrs. Sauerbrun served as a Girl Scout leader and was honored with the then Eagle Scout Award, a most highly regarded honor from the Girl Scouts of America. She was a member of the Genealogical Society of the West Fields, as well as the Women’s Auxiliary of the Children’s Specialized Hospital.
Mrs. Sauerbrun’s wide ranging interests included dance.
Having studied many dance styles from a young age through college, she landed a summer job at Martha Graham’s retreat for professional dancers.
Mrs. Sauerbrun was a substitute teacher of English and Physical Education at Roosevelt Junior High School in Westfield.
She also served as a Red Cross Life Guard and taught swimming and sailing on Lake Winnipesaukee and the Finger Lakes.
Mrs. Sauerbrun’s love of the outdoors led her to become active in many varied hobbies.
She was an avid environmentalist and enjoyed hiking, bird and wildlife watching, golfing, swimming, skiing, tennis and paddle tennis.
Other pastimes she enjoyed were bowling, ballet and figure skating.
She was also an accomplished pianist and played the ukulele.
In her many endeavors and, by example, Mrs. Sauerbrun was a strong women’s advocate.
Mrs. Sauerbrun is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Hamlin Sauerbrun of North Plainfield, and her cousin, Paul Felton of Lansdale, Pa.
Mrs. Sauerbrun’s life will be celebrated at a memorial service Friday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield, where she had been a member since 1945.
Arrangements are by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.

Mary Cicio, 83
Mary Cicio, 83, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, November 13, 2000 at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Orange, she had lived there and in Jacksonville, Fla., before moving to Scotch Plains in 1994.
Mrs. Cicio was a homemaker and a volunteer at Union Hospital in Union.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Cicio, in 1975.
Surviving are two daughters, Elizabeth Hornung of Millville, Del. and Patricia Saltarella of Forest Hill, Md.; a son, Frank J. Cicio of Nutley; a brother, Thomas Starrett of Toms River; two sisters, Margaret Pauciello of Newton and Elizabeth Weigand of Jacksonville, Fla.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, November 17, from the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Interment will be at the Hollywood Memorial Park in Union.
Visitation will take place today, Thursday, November 16, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Deerfield Student; Athlete and Active in Local Church
Ryan Patrick Faella, 13, of Mountainside died on Tuesday, August 1, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Elizabeth before moving to Mountainside eight years ago.
Ryan was a student at Deerfield Middle School in Mountainside and would have entered the eighth grade in September.
He played baseball and volleyball at Deerfield and was a first baseman and outfielder with the Mountainside All-Star Baseball Team.
Ryan was an altar server and a member of the Junior Emmaus Group, both at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Surviving are his parents, Alfred J. Mary Theresa Faella; two brothers, Jude Michael Faella and Sean Edgar Faella, and his grandparents, Nicholas D. Glynn and Jennie Faella.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, August 5, in Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Mountainside.
The funeral was held in the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Dominick Ponturo, 71
Dominick P. Ponturo, 71, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, August 2, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in Westfield and Scotch Plains before moving to Fanwood in 1968.
Mr. Ponturo had been a foreman with MarKay Bags in Plainfield for 21 years before retiring many years ago.
Surviving are Lena Ponturo, his wife of 52 years; a son, Philip J. Ponturo; two daughters, Theresa A. Popolan and Brenda M. Waters; two sisters, Frances Pompilio and Lena Simone, and six grandchildren.

Gertrude E. Murray, 79

Gertrude E. Murray, 79, of Fanwood died on Thursday, August 3, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Roselle Park before relocating to Fanwood 45 years ago.
Mrs. Murray had been employed as a secretary with Airco Corporation in Murray Hill for more than 20 years before retiring in 1980.
She was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains and of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Women’s Business Association.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Joseph Gigl and Robert Gigl, and three sisters, Dorothy Ellams, Mary Waterman and Frances Schlear.
Surviving are her husband, Elwyn J. Murray, and a brother, Raymond Gigl of Westfield.
Funeral services were held on Monday, August 7, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
Interment took place in St. Gertrude Cemetery in Clark.
