Shirley Schwarz, 74
Lifelong Parishioner; Active in Hospital and Historical Groups
Shirley Schwarz, 74, a lifelong Westfield resident, died on Saturday, September 19, 1998 at her summer residence in Brielle.
Born on January 13, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harry D. and Mabel Pettit Taylor.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Schwarz was a lifetime member of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
She also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Phi Beta Phi Sorority and the Overlook Hospital TWIG group.
She was an honorary member of the Manasquan River Yacht Club.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Robert Schwarz; two sons, Richard Schwarz of Brielle and Doug Schwarz of Westfield; a daughter, Carol Greco of Westfield, and eight grandchildren.
A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, September 23, in the Sanctuary of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Mr. and Mrs. Michaels
Video Editors, Worked for Metro Studios in New York
Melanie and Lloyd Michaels of New York City died Saturday, September 12, 1998 at their home.
Mrs. Michael was born in Summit and had lived in Mountainside and Boston before moving to Manhattan nine years ago.
A videotape editor, Mrs. Michaels, 39, worked for Metro Studies, Court TV and other facilities.
Mr. Michaels, 42, was a chief engineer for C&C; , a video editing facility, and Metro Studios, both of New York.
The couple is survived by a daughter, Kelsea Michaels.
Mrs. Michaels is also survived by her father, Hal Tulchin; a brother, Gene Tulchin; two sisters, Jamie Tulchin and Ava Seavey, and a half-sister, Sasha Tulchin. Mr. Michaels is also survived by his parents, Michael and Edith Michaels.
A Memorial Service will be held tomorrow, Friday, September 25, at 2:30 p.m. in the United Nation’s Church Center in New York City.

Carmen W. Elicker
Carmen W. Elicker of Delray Beach, Florida, formerly of Westfield, died on Thursday, September 17, 1998.
Mrs. Elicker had worked for many years in the Admissions Office at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles S. Elicker, and a son, Charles Rolf Elicker.
Surviving are a daughter, Victoria Elicker Berns of Delray Beach; a son, Walter W. Elicker of Beverly, Massachusetts and four grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in Delray Beach at a later date.

Jean Jordan Dunn, 84
Jean Jordan Dunn, 84, of Westfield died on Sunday, September 13, 1998 at home.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, she had lived there for 37 years before moving to Westfield 47 years ago.
Mrs. Dunn graduated from Upsala College in East Orange with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Philosophy, and earned her master’s degree in Library Science from Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
She had been an executive for Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill for 20 years, retiring in 1981.
Mrs. Dunn served as a volunteer at the Westfield Community Center, tutoring children, and with the Westfield Memorial Library.
She additionally was a member of the Auxiliary of the Unitarian Church in Summit.
In 1997, she received the Clara Barton Award from the Unitarian Universalist Association.
She was predeceased by a grandson, Jack R. Moreno.
Surviving are her husband, Colonel Jack B. Dunn; three daughters, Cornelia Dunn Isasi of Norwalk, Connecticut, Lucinda Dunn of Long Branch and Abigail Dunn of Westfield; a sister, Leah Helfrich of Delaware, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 26, at 2 p.m. at the Unitarian Church in Summit.

Loretta Golden, 99
Loretta Golden, 99, of Bridgewater died on Tuesday, September 15, 1998 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Fanwood before moving to Bridgewater.
Mrs. Golden was a member of the United Methodist Church in Bridgewater.
She was predeceased by her husband, John Golden, in 1953.
Surviving are two sons, John E. Golden of Green Brook and Charles P. Golden of Toms River; three daughters, Loretta H. Meyer of Bridgewater, Dorothy A. Biven of Minoa, New York, and Betty Brown of Branchburg; 13 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 18, at the United Methodist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Speer-Van Arsdale Funeral Home in Somerville.

James E. Sherman, 84
James E. Sherman, 84, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, September 16, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Lyons.
Born in Jersey City, he had moved to Fanwood in 1953.
Mr. Sherman had worked at the Library Bindery Company of Pennsylvania in Horsham, Pennsylvania prior to retiring in 1978.
He was a United States Navy veteran, serving as a machinist mate, first class from 1937 to 1944.
Mr. Sherman was a life member of the Fanwood Volunteer Rescue Squad and a member of American Legion Post No. 209 of Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ruth Ebersole Sherman, in 1964.
Surviving are a daughter, Ruth A. Percoskie of Fanwood, and a grandson.
Funeral services were held on Friday, September 18, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, in Fanwood.

Susan Covras of Westfield died on Thursday, September 17, 1998 in the Father Hudson House in Elizabeth.
Born in Plainfield, she was the daughter of the late Gabriel and Sapfo Covras.
Miss Covras had been a methods analyst for AT&T; in Murray Hill from 1964 until she retired in 1989.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Tula Covras, in 1995.
A private graveside service was held at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Phoebe A. Ellis, 63
Phoebe A. Ellis, 63, of Fanwood died on Thursday, September 17, 1998 at home.
Born in Orange, she had lived in South Orange, in Wilmington, Delaware and in Plainfield before moving to Fanwood in 1960.
Mrs. Ellis graduated in 1956 from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry.
She was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society.
She was formerly employed by Hercules Chemical Company in Wilmington in the Patent Division.
Later, she was employed by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development in Newark.
From 1991 to 1995, she had served as the Director of Staff Operations at the Housing Authority for the City of Perth Amboy.
She was predeceased by a brother, Raymond Adams, in 1996.
Surviving are her husband, Robert W. Ellis; a daughter, Jean Louise Ellis of Wenham, Massachusetts; two sons, Robert A. Ellis of Burlington, Massachusetts and William W. Ellis of Richmond, Virginia; a sister, Emme Putnam of Englewood, Colorado; a brother, Dr. Richard Adams of Chelmsford, Massachusetts, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 20, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
