Joyce H. Farley, 69
Was Crossing Guard; Served as Scout Leader, PTA President
Joyce H. Farley, 69, of Westfield died on Saturday, September 19, 1998 at Rahway Hospital in Rahway.
Born on August 1, 1929, the daughter of the late Walter and Michaelena Sienkiewicz, she had lived in Westfield for the past 33 years.
Mrs. Farley had worked as a crossing guard in Westfield for 18 years before retiring in 1995.
She was a member of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. In addition, Mrs. Farley was a Girl Scout leader and a Past President of the Parent-Teacher Association, both in Westfield.
Surviving are her husband, Edward Farley; four daughters, Cheryl Geyer of Pine Beach, Pamela Farley of Yardley, Pennsylvania, Judy Farley of West Orange and Cynthia Farley Geyer of Ridgewood; a sister, Frieda Zucker of Springfield; two brothers, George Sienkiewicz of Union and Frederick Sienkiewicz of Rahway; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, September 22, at the Holy Trinity Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Sol Rappaport
Was Army Veteran; President of Senior Citizens Housing
Sol Rappaport of Westfield died on Saturday, September 19, 1998 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Brooklyn and Edison before moving to Westfield three years ago.
Mr. Rappaport had worked in the bond department of Merrill Lynch in New York City for 10 years before retiring in 1978.
He had previously owned the Rappaport & Son restaurant in Brooklyn for many years.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Mr. Rappaport was the first President of the Westfield II Senior Citizens Housing. He was a member of the Senior Bowling Leagues of Edison and Westfield.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Krohn and Marsha Dainoff, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 20, at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Helen Matunas, 75
Helen Matunas, 75, of Westfield died on Tuesday, September 22, 1998 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Brooklyn, she had moved to Westfield in 1970.
Ms. Mantunas had been a secretary for various companies in Manhattan for many years before retiring in 1972.
Surviving is a sister, Katherine Berzanskis.
A Funeral Mass will be offered tomorrow, Friday, September 25, at 10 a.m. at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, following the funeral from the August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
Carl F. Jamison, 81
Had Owned Business; Held Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
Carl F. Jamison, 81, of Sarasota, Florida died on Friday, September 4, 1998 in Sarasota General Hospital.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he had lived in Morristown, Short Hills and Mountainside before moving to Sarasota in 1983.
Mr. Jamison had owned C. F. Jamison Engineering Company in Mountainside for 15 years before retiring in 1983.
He graduated from Ohio University in 1940 with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in Athens, Ohio.
Surviving are his wife, Anne Jamison; two daughters, Judith Haig and Elaine Timler; a son, Carl F. Jamison, Jr.; eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
Private funeral services were held under the direction of the National Cremation Society of Sarasota.
Patricia A. Hinson, 66
Rutgers Alumna; Taught at Edison School for Many Years
Patricia A. Hinson, 66, of Las Vegas, Nevada died on Saturday, September 12, 1998 at home.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Las Vegas in 1992.
Mrs. Hinson had been a teacher at Edison Junior High School, now Edison Intermediate School, in Westfield for more than 25 years before retiring.
She was a graduate of Washington College in Maryland, and had also received a master’s degree from Rutgers University.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Hinson-Jones; a son, John P. Hinson; a sister, Grace Johnson, and a grandchild.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, September 26, at 9 a.m. in Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
Arrangements are being handled by the Palm Mortuary-Cheyenne in Las Vegas.
Kathryn Gibney, 79
Was Active Locally; Involved in Heart Group and Area Clubs
Kathryn A. Gibney, 79, of Mountainside, formerly a longtime resident of Westfield, died on Friday, August 21, 1998.
Mrs. Gibney had lived in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and Richmond, Virginia, prior to moving to Westfield.
She had subsequently lived in Avon-by-the-Sea and in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Mrs. Gibney was active in many civic and charitable organizations, including the Newcomers’ Club, the Garden Club of Westfield, and the American Heart Association Blood Drive.
Surviving are her husband of 57 years, Harvey Gibney; a daughter, Louise Gibney; a son, Charles Gibney; four grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
Private funeral services were arranged by the Wm. A. Bradley & Son Funeral Home of Chatham.
Rheta N. Marenghi
Was Bookkeeper; Active in Auxiliary, American Legion
Rheta Naylor Marenghi, 95, of Watchung died Saturday, September 19, 1998 at Genesis ElderCare The Woodlands in Plainfield.
Born in Peapack, she had lived in Westfield and Chatham before moving to Watchung in 1982.
She had worked as a bookkeeper for Peoples Bank and Trust Company in Westfield before retiring many years ago.
Mrs. Marenghi was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the American Legion in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Leon Marenghi, in 1978.
A Graveside Service was held yesterday, Wednesday, September 23, at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
David Coulter, 52
Former IBM Employee; SPFHS Graduate Served at West Point
David D. Coulter, 52, of Kennesaw, Georgia, died on Friday, September 4, 1998 at Tranquility Hospice in Austell, Georgia.
Born in Plainfield, he was raised in Fanwood and had lived in Morris Plains, Spotswood and Marlton before moving to Georgia in 1985.
Mr. Coulter was a 1964 graduate of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and a 1968 graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
He served in the United States Army at West Point from 1969 to 1971.
Mr. Coulter worked at TPN Register after spending 25 years at IBM, including various assignments in New Jersey, Philadelphia and Atlanta.
Surviving are his wife, Jacqueline Coulter; two sons, Chris Coulter of Cartersville, Georgia and Steven Hackling of Kennesaw; a daughter, Tricia Dougherty of Norcross, Georgia; his parents, John and Jean Coulter of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Fanwood, and a sister, Barbara Cox of Fanwood.
A memorial service was held in Marietta, Georgia on Tuesday, September 8.
Arrangements were handled by the Carmichael Funeral Home of Marietta.

Alan H. Nerl of Branson, Missouri died on Wednesday, September 16, 1998 at home.
Born in Westfield, he had lived in Allentown, Pennsylvania before moving to Branson.
Mr. Nerl attended high school in Clark before entering the United States Navy.
Surviving are his daughters, Kendra Nerl and Briana Nerl; his father, Frank H. Nerl of Cranford; a sister, Pat Boytos of Cranford, and two brothers, Robert Nerl of Dunellen and Dan Nerl of Seasterville, Pennsylvania.
Private services were arranged by the Snapp’s Funeral Home in Branson.
