Ernest ‘Duke’ Oerfradi, 74
Worked For United Parcel Service for 32 Years
Ernest “Duke” Oerfradi, 74, of New Castle, Del. died on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Westfield before moving to New Castle nine years ago.
Mr. Oerfradi had been employed as a driver for the United Parcel Service for 32 years before retiring in 1987.
After his retirement, he worked as a landscaper for a nursery in Westfield.
He was a member of the American Legion and St. Peter the Apostle Church in New Castle.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Victoria Oerfradi; a son, Michael Oerfradi; three daughters, Nancy Oerfradi, Deborah Oerfradi and Michele Oerfradi; a stepdaughter, Gina; a brother, Joseph Oerfradi; three sisters, Viola Oerfradi, Yolanda Oerfradi and Pearl Oerfradi, and six grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Friday, January 21, at St. Peter the Apostle Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Krienen-Griffith Funeral Home in New Castle.
Margaret De Castro, 89
Rosarian; Was Active With Local UNICO
Margaret M. De Castro, 89, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, January 19, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, she moved to Scotch Plains in 1948.
Mrs. De Castro had been a secretary for 10 years, until 1939, with the Sherwin Williams Paint Company in Newark.
Mrs. De Castro was a member of the UNICO Women’s Auxiliary and the Rosary Altar Society of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, both in Scotch Plains.
She was a 1929 graduate of the Drake Business School in Newark.
Surviving are Thomas F. DeCastro, her husband of 69 years; a son, Thomas P. De Castro; a sister, Emily Pondillo; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Private funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.

M. Virginia Regenthal, 85
Exxon Retiree; Served in Navy During World War II
M. Virginia Regenthal, 85, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 in the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Center in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Elizabeth, the daughter of the late Henry F. and Gertrude Lilley Regenthal, she moved to Scotch Plains in 1950.
Ms. Regenthal had been a secretary for the Exxon Corporation for 25 years before retiring in 1980, and was a member of its annuitants club.
She was a member of the Historical Society of Scotch Plains and Fanwood.
Ms. Regenthal served in the United States Navy during World War II as a Yeoman Third Class.
Services were held on Friday, January 21, in the August F. Schmidt Memorial Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
Augustus Bender, 81
Princeton Graduate; Had Been Executive at Several Firms
Augustus J. Bender, 81, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Westfield before relocating to Scotch Plains three years ago.
Mr. Bender had been the Director of National Sales for Combe Inc. of White Plains, N.Y., where he worked for 15 years before retiring in 1986.
Previously, he had been National Sales Director for Fabergé in New York City and for Shulton Inc. of Clifton.
Mr. Bender received a bachelor’s degree in geology from Princeton University.
He was a member of the Princeton Club in New York City and the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield.
Surviving are Jane Bender, his wife of 47 years; a son, James A. Bender; two daughters, Diane Bender and Lisa Bender; two sisters, Joan Bender and Sally Campagna, and five grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, January 22, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Michael Gonnella, 75
Was Partner In Solid Waste Equipment Business
Michael Gonnella, 75, of Mountainside died on Monday, January 24, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in East Orange, he had resided in Westfield for many years before moving to Mountainside in 1954.
Mr. Gonnella was a partner with his brother, Joseph Gonnella, for the last 20 years in Solid Waste Equipment, Inc. of Westfield, a firm dealing in the sales and installation of sanitation compactors.
He had previously been the owner of Golden Dawn Dairies in Westfield, the largest distributor for Raritan Valley Farms in Somerville.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret DiLorenzo Gonnella; a daughter, Norma Jean Friend; three sons, Anthony Gonnella; Michael Gonnella and Thomas Gonnella; a sister, Annette Buldo; a brother, Joseph Gonnella, and five grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered tomorrow, Friday, January 28, at 10 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment will take place in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Barbara Holstein, 57
Hadassah Member; Was Former Resident of Scotch Plains
Barbara J. Holstein, 57, of Palm City, Fla. died on Friday, January 21, 2000 in Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Palm City 13 years ago.
She was a life member of Hadassah and a member of the Organization of Rehabilitation Through Training.
Surviving are a daughter, Tracy Snyder; her mother, Lillian Goss, and a sister, Debbi Farkas.
Graveside services were held in Palm City on Monday, January 24, in the Forest Hills Memorial Park.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Forest Hills Funeral Home in Palm City.
John P. Welkner, 7
Was Machinist; Served in Navy During World War II
John P. Welkner, 79, of Fanwood died on Friday, January 21, 2000 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Akron, Ohio, he had lived in Brooklyn and Garwood before moving to Fanwood in 1957.
Mr. Welkner had been employed as a machinist with the Accurate Bushing Company in Garwood for 45 years before retiring.
After his retirement, he worked part-time for L&B Typo in Scotch Plains.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II.
He was predeceased by a son, Douglas J. Welkner, in 1974.
Surviving are his wife, Anita Guerriero Welkner; two brothers, Robert J. Welkner of Brooklyn and Arthur Welkner of La Mesa, Calif., and a sister, Adele Maloney of Toms River.
Services were held on Tuesday, January 24, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Alice Pinkin, 75
Was Office Manager; Active With Rosary Society and GOP
Alice M. Mann Pinkin, 75, of Brick died on Saturday, January 22, 2000 at Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born and raised in Linden, she had lived in Garwood for 40 years before moving to Brick 12 years ago.
Mrs. Pinkin had been an office manager for Wisner Manufacturing in Mountainside for over 20 years before retiring in 1987.
She was the President of the Brick Rosary Altar Society and a member of the St. Anne’s Rosary Altar Society in Garwood.
She was an officer in the Garwood Republican Club and a member of the Garwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
She was also a member of the Lion Head Lionettes Woman’s Club of Brick.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wallace Pinkin.
Surviving are three sons, James Pinkin of Westfield, Thomas Pinkin of Maryland and Robert Pinkin of California; two daughters Nancy Salwitz of East Brunswick and Maryanne Troyk of Illinois; a brother, Ralph G. Mann; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Tuesday, January 25, at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood.
Burial took place in Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue in Garwood.
