Evelyn H. Rountree, 86
Evelyn H. Rountree, 86, of Bedminster died on Monday, January 24, 2000 at home.
Born in West Orange, she had lived in Point Pleasant before relocating to Bedminster in 1955.
Mrs. Rountree was a member of the National Audubon and Wildlife Society.
Her husband, Albert L. Rountree, 3rd, died in 1997.
Surviving are a son, Albert Rountree of Westfield and two grandsons.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, January 27, at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment will follow at Fair View Cemetery in Middletown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 815, Elizabeth, 07207-0815.
Barbara Mastroianni
Barbara Mastroianni, 38, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, January 22, 2000 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Fanwood before moving to Scotch Plains.
Mrs. Mastroianni was a 1981 graduate of the Katherine Gibbs Business School.
Surviving are her husband, Dominick Mastroianni; two daughters, Marissa Mastroianni and Lauren Mastroianni; her parents, John and Gilda DeCristofaro, and two sisters, Gina Rossman and Tina Ferrara.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, January 26, in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains, following the funeral from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Anna Miklas, 100
Anna Marusic Miklas of Scotch Plains, who celebrated her 100th birthday in August, died on Thursday, January 20, 2000 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Czechoslovakia, she had lived in Newark and Hillside for 50 years before moving to Scotch Plains 10 years ago.
Mrs. Miklas was a member of the Senior Ladies Guild of the Zion Lutheran Church in Clark.
She was predeceased by her husband, Paul Miklas, Sr.
Surviving are two sons, Paul Miklas and Walter Miklas; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Monday, January 24, in the Zion Lutheran Church.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Werson Funeral Home in Linden.
Memorial donations may be made to the Zion Lutheran Church, 559 Raritan Road in Clark.
Edward Gilinsky
Part of Most Decorated Flight Crew in North Pacific During War
Edward Gilinsky of Neptune City died on Friday, January 21, 2000 in the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.
Born in Lithuania, he had lived in South Plainfield before moving to the shore area 20 years ago.
Mr. Gilinsky had been a buyer for Tepper’s department store in Plainfield for 30 years, retiring in 1975.
He served with the most decorated flight crew in the North Pacific Theater during World War II, receiving a Flying Cross with an Oak Leaf and an Air Medal with two Oak Leaf clusters.
He was a member of Temple Beth Torah in Ocean Township and of the Bradley Beach Seniors Harmony Club.
Mr. Gilinsky served as the financial secretary for the shore area chapter of Deborah for the last 15 years.
He was a former member of B’nai Brith.
Surviving are his wife, Ceceil Gilinsky; a son, Larry Gilinsky of Howell; a sister, Rachel Grindlinger of Mountainside, and four grandchildren.
Services were held on Sunday, January 23, at the Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels in Ocean Township.
Interment was at New Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin, Woodbridge.
Shiva was observed at the Gilinsky residence.
Eleanor M. Watts, 81
Eleanor Marie Watts, 81, of Hickory, N.C., died on Friday, January 21, 2000 in the North Carolina Lutheran Home in Hickory.
Born in Binghamton, N.Y., Mrs. Watts had lived in Westfield before moving to Hickory.
Mrs. Watts was a retired sales representative.
She was a graduate of the Women’s College of Greensboro, N.C.
Surviving are a daughter, Mary Ellen Watts Furkey; a son, C. John Watts, 3rd; a sister, Marion O. Hines; three brothers, George E. Ortleb, Charles L. Ortleb and Robert F. Ortleb, and five grandchildren.
A Mass was offered at on Tuesday, January 25, in St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Rockaway.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Hickory Funeral Home, Hickory.
Dr. Burton M. Feinsmith, 73
Practiced Pediatrics in Westfield Over 30 Years
Dr. Burton M. Feinsmith, 73, of Aventura, Fla., died Wednesday, December 29, 2000 in the Aventura Medical Center.
Born in Brooklyn on December 14, 1926, he had lived in Westfield for 34 years before relocating to Aventura.
He had practiced pediatrics in Westfield for more than 30 years prior to his retirement in 1998.
Dr. Feinsmith was Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City.
He was also an attending physician in Pediatrics at Overlook Hospital in Summit and formerly served in that capacity at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Miami in Florida.
He received his medical degree from the University of Berne in Switzerland and completed an internship at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark.
He did his pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital in Newark.
Dr. Feinsmith was an officer of the Union County Medical Society for many years and had served as its President.
He was the author of many scientific papers and for many years was team physician for the Westfield High School football team.
He was an intercollegiate boxing champion during his undergraduate years at the University of Arkansas.
Surviving are his wife, Seena Feinsmith; a son, Todd Feinsmith of Marblehead, Mass., and a granddaughter.
Services were held on Sunday, January 2, at Lakeside Cemetery in Miami.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Riverside-Gordon Memorial Chapel in North Miami Beach, Fla.
Harriet Carmichael, 93
Was Teacher; Played Piano at Rialto During Silent Era
Harriet Wentlandt Carmichael, 93, of West Orange died on Thursday, September 7, 2000 at the Green Hill Nursing Home in West Orange.
Born in Westfield, she had lived there and in Plainfield before returning to Westfield.
She relocated to West Orange almost three years ago.
Mrs. Carmichael had taught elementary education in the Plainfield public school system for 30 years.
She was an active member of the Westfield Historical Society, the Grant Avenue Presbyterian Church in Plainfield and the National Education Association.
During the silent film era of the 1920s and 1930s, she played the piano at the Rialto Theatre in Westfield.
She was predeceased by a brother, former Westfield Police Sergeant Paul Wentlandt.
Surviving are a daughter, Carrie Carmichael of New York City; a son, William Carmichael of Chicago; a sister, Elizabeth Wentlandt Lenard of Toms River, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, September 10, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Interment was private.
John Fiore, 78
Was Electrical Engineer; Veteran and Power Squadron Member
John Fiore, 78, of Westfield died on Wednesday, September 6, 2000 at Union Hospital.
Born in Boston, he had lived in Elizabeth for 50 years before moving to Westfield two years ago.
Mr. Fiore had been an electrical engineer for the Singer-Kearfott Company in Wayne for 25 years before retiring in 1984.
Before that, he was an electrical engineer for the Curtiss-Wright Corporation in Newark for 10 years.
He was awarded his bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering in 1950 and a master’s degree, also in electrical engineering, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952.
He served with the United States Army in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater during World War II.
He was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the United States Power Squadron, Watchung Chapter.
Surviving are three sons, John J. Fiore, James V. Fiore and Michael T. Fiore; a brother, Alfred Fiore; two sisters, Adele Tarallo and Helen Previte, and four grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, September 9, in St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Hillside, following the funeral from the Leonard Home for Funerals in Elizabeth.
