Janet D. Egan, 76
Church Secretary; Was Active Member of Church Choir
Janet D. Egan, 76, of Manahawkin, died Tuesday, December 22, 1998 at Lacey Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Forked River.
Born in Plainfield, she was a longtime resident of North Plainfield before moving to Manahawkin in April of this year.
Mrs. Egan was a member and secretary of the Church of the Holy Cross in North Plainfield for 32 years, retiring in 1995. She was also a member of the church’s choir and Episcopal Church Women.
Surviving are her husband, Harris Egan; a son, Bruce Egan of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Patricia Busnack of Cokesbury, and five grandchildren.
A Funeral Service was held on Monday, December 28, at the Church of the Holy Cross.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Reserve Fund of Church of the Holy Cross, 40 Mercer Avenue, North Plainfield, 07060.

David Roy Staack, 53
David Roy Staack, 53, of Westfield died Friday, December 18, 1998 at home.
Born in New Jersey, he had lived in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma before moving to Westfield 10 years ago.
He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Staack was a sales representative for Elm Radio and Television in Westfield for 10 years where he was still active.
He was a member of the Vietnam War Post of Westfield and The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
He was also a member of the “Y” Squares and the Square Dance Club of Clark.
Surviving are his aunts, Marion Jones Cory of Toms River and Carolyn Wallace of Colorado Springs, Colorado.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, December 27, at 1 p.m. at the Chapel of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Westfield Rescue Squad, 335 Watterson Street, Westfield, 07090.

Anthony Rasera, Jr., 68
Army Corporal; Owned AA Bar and Restaurant Supply
Anthony F. Rasera, Jr., 68, of Roselle died on Sunday, December 27, 1998 at home.
Born in Garwood, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Roselle.
Mr. Rasera had been the owner of AA Bar and Restaurant Supply in Elizabeth for 15 years before retiring in 1989.
He served as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He was an active member of UNICO National, serving as Chairman of the UNICO National Gifts and Toy Fund, which distributes toys to mentally handicapped children.
He was a member of the Red Cross and the Salvation Army, both in Elizabeth, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 14000 in Kansas City, Missouri, as well as American Legion Post No. 3 in Westfield.
He was predeceased by his father, Anthony F. Rasera, Sr.
Surviving are his mother, Fannie Caserta Rasera, and a sister, Joan Marcketta.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered yesterday, Wednesday, December 30, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery, also in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the UNICO National Gift and Toy Fund.

Antoinette Ventura, 100
Homemaker; Co-founded Fanwood Senior Citizens
Antoinette Ventura, 100, of Fanwood died on Sunday, December 27, 1998 at Genesis ElderCare-The Woodlands in Plainfield.
Born in Avelino, Italy, she had lived in Mountainside before moving to Fanwood 40 years ago.
Mrs. Ventura was a homemaker and the co-founder of the Fanwood Senior Citizens.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mondea Ventura, in 1988.
Surviving are two sons, Richard Ventura of Fanwood and Robert Ventura of Mountainside; five daughters, Mary Lardiere of Lakehurst, Dorothy Cioffi of Manahawkin, Ruth Ventura of Whiting, Anna Ventura of Sterling and Patricia Wilde of Bedminster; 30 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held today, Thursday, December 31, at 10 a.m. at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood, followed by a Mass at 11 a.m. at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Interment will take place at Somerset Hills Memorial Park in Basking Ridge.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fanwood Senior Citizens Club.

Everett M. Emery, 79
Army Veteran; Was Mattress Closer at Simmons Co.
Everett M. Emery, 79, of Westfield died on Monday, December 28, 1998 at home.
Born in Dunmore, Pennsylvania, he had lived in Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, for many years before moving to Westfield 45 years ago.
Mr. Emery had been a mattress closer for the Simmons Company in Elizabeth for 34 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and served with the 94th Infantry Division during the campaigns in Northern France, Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe.
Mr. Emery was a member of the 94th Division Association and of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 11467 of Westfield.
He attended the Evangel Church of Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Esther Matweyiw Emery; three sons, Rodney C. Emery of Boston, Carl D. Emery of Somerville, Massachusetts, and Donald B. Emery of Kenilworth; a brother, Alfred Emery of Elkart, Indiana; a sister, Hazel Goodrich of Greene, New York, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, December 30, at the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Interment took place at Graceland Memorial Park in Kenilworth.

Bernard Meyer, Jr., 80
Lab Technician; Served in Army’s 101st Airborne Division
Bernard L. Meyer, Jr., 80, of Westfield died Thursday, December 24, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
He was a lifelong resident of Westfield.
Mr. Meyer was a lab technician with Merck & Co. in Rahway for 40 years before retiring in 1981.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving with the 101st Airborne Division.
Surviving are his wife, Margaret “Toots” Madsen Meyer of Westfield; three daughters, Diane Dear of Garwood, Barbara Arbes of Green Bay, Wisconsin, and Robin Baldassarre of Roselle Park; three sons, William Meyer of Westfield, Michael Meyer of Cincinnati, Ohio and John Meyer of Westfield; two sisters, Eileen Meyer of Westfield and Marion Hohenstein of Manasquan; 15 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, December 27, at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Leonard P. Newman, Sr., 88
Athlete; Art Color Cutter Was Semi-Pro Pitcher
Leonard P. Newman, Sr., 88, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, December 25, 1998 at Robert Wood Johnson Junior Healthcare Center in Plainfield.
Born and raised in Plainfield, he lived in Scotch Plains for the past 25 years.
Mr. Newman had been a cutter for 42 years at Art Color Printing in Dunellen.
He had also been employed in the maintenance department at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield for 12 years before retiring in 1975.
A member of the Art Color Basketball City Champs, Mr. Newman had also been a semi-professional baseball pitcher for the Plainfield Twilight Team in the Union County Baseball League.
Surviving are his wife, Frances Leo Newman; two sons, Leonard P. Newman, Jr. of North Plainfield and William S. Jennings of Plainfield; a daughter, Barbara Rastall of Lanoka Harbor; two brothers, Albert Newman of North Plainfield and Robert Newman of Piscataway, and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, December 30, at the Scarpa Funeral Home in North Plainfield.

Amy Bacon, 72
Grandmother of Four; International Bowling Congress Member
Amy S. Bacon, 72, of Fanwood died on Sunday, December 27, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Newton, Massachusetts, she had lived in Point Pleasant before moving to Fanwood in 1970.
Mrs. Bacon was a member of the Women’s International Bowling Congress.
She was predeceased by her husband, Charles V. Bacon, Jr., in 1989, and by a son, George W. Hottel, Jr., in 1996.
Surviving are another son, Richard Hottel of Claremont, California; two daughters, Amy Hottel of New York City and Wendy Davis of Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania; four grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, December 30, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Red Cross, 332 West Front Street, Plainfield, 07060, or to the Deborah Foundation, P.O. Box 820, Brown Mills, 08015.
