Alice Kingston, 95, of Westfield died on Friday, October 6, 2000 at the Norwood Terrace Health Center, Plainfield.
Born in Virginia, Mrs. Kingston moved to Westfield as a child.
Mrs. Kingston, was a domestic worker for many years with various families in Westfield.
A member of the Westfield Senior Citizens, she also was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church and its missionaries.
Surviving are a brother, Fate Harris, and twin sister, Mary Gilliam.
Services were held on Wednesday, October 11, at Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Plainfield.
Alma Banks, 85
Alma Banks, 85, of Scotch Plains, died on Thursday, October 5, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Holland, Va., she had lived in Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains last year.
Surviving are two daughters, Charnette Banks and Carol Francia; two sisters, Ora Milteer and Selma Byrd; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, October 9, at Evangel Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Jones Funeral Home in Rahway.
Lynne Miller, 54
School Librarian; Founding Member of Tiny Tim Fund
Lynne Miller, 54, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, October 19, 2000 at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark.
Born in Tuscaloosa, Ala., she had lived in North Plainfield before relocating to Scotch Plains 26 years ago.
Mrs. Miller worked as a librarian at the Washington Elementary School in Westfield for the past 29 years.
She was a volunteer with the United States Gymnastics Association and served as the Director for Rhythmic Gymnastics Region 5.
She was a founding member of the Tiny Tim Fund in Scotch Plains-Fanwood and had served as President of the Fanwood-Scotch Plains Jayceeetts.
Mrs. Miller received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa in 1967.
She was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority at the University of Alabama, the New Jersey Education Association and the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her mother, Carolyn Lewis Milstead.
Surviving are her husband, Craig R. Miller; a daughter, Caralynne Marie Miller of Scotch Plains; a son, Christopher R. Miller of Scotch Plains; her father, Clinton R. Milstead of Birmingham, Ala.; her stepmother, Eunice Milstead; a brother, Michael Milstead of Birmingham, and a sister, Kim Milstead, also of Birmingham.
Esther L. Silverstone, 96
Was Active In Synagogue and Senior Housing
Esther L. Pollock Silverstone, 96, of Westfield died on Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived there before moving to the Westfield Senior Housing in 1985.
Mrs. Silverstone had been employed as a sales clerk for The Hamilton Shop in Plainfield for 10 years, retiring in 1984.
Before that, she had worked for The Surprise Store in Plainfield for 10 years and The Silverstone Cigar Store in Plainfield for 15 years.
She was a member of Temple Emanu-El in Westfield and of its Friendship Group.
Mrs. Silverstone was also a member of the Golden Group of Cranford and served as Hospitality Chairperson of the Westfield Senior Housing Board.
She was a 1923 graduate of Plainfield High School.
Surviving are two sons, Louis Silverstone of Long Beach, Long Island and Robert Silverstone of Montauk, Long Island; a daughter, Anne Glasser of Westfield; a sister, Dorothy Pollock; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Friday, October 20, at Temple Emanu-El.
Interment took place in the United Orthodox Cemetery in South Plainfield.
Arrangements were completed by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Stephen Potasky, 80
Artist Illustrator; Teacher and Veteran of World War II
Stephen “Steve” Potasky, 80, a former Westfield resident, died on Wednesday, September 20, 2000 in Mariner Healthcare of Port Charlotte in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Born in Elizabeth, he had lived in Cranford and in Westfield before moving to Florida.
Mr. Potasky had been employed as an artist illustrator for the I. T. T. Corporation of Nutley for more than 25 years before retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the New Jersey Watercolor Society and the Westfield Art Association.
Mr. Potasky also taught watercolor classes at Union County College and in Florida.
One of his paintings was included in the traveling exhibition “21 Paint in Hyplar, ” sponsored by M. Grumbacher, Inc. of New York, which toured the United States.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Air Force with the 317th Troop Carrier Group known as “The Jungle Skippers, ” which participated in most of the major campaigns in the Southwest Pacific for more than two years.
Surviving are two daughters, Patrice Patterson of Cranford and Phyllis Becker of Hillsborough; two sisters, Mary LaRocco of Cranford and Rose Mikyska of Anaheim, Calif., and three grandchildren.
A private memorial service was arranged by the Ewing Funeral Home in Venice, Fla.
Dorothy Johnson, 78
Dorothy Johnson, 78, of Raleigh, N.C., died on Monday, October 2, 2000 at home.
Born in Hazlehurst, Miss., Mrs. Johnson had lived in Westfield for 35 years and Plainfield for 40 years before moving to Raleigh in 1998.
Mrs. Johnson had worked for the Burroughs Corporation in Piscataway for 10 years and also as a private duty nurse for various families in the Westfield Plainfield area before retiring in 1992.
She sang in the choir at St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church in Westfield.
Surviving are a son, Donald Sumner; four daughters, Barbara Miner-Brown, Brenda Muhammad, Robin Brown and Cheryle Jones; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday, October 7, at the Covenant United Methodist Church in Plainfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield.
Concetta San Giacomo, 87
Member Of Rosarians and Golden Agers
Concetta San Giacomo, 87, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, October 20, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, she relocated to Scotch Plains 34 years ago.
Mrs. San Giacomo had been a salesperson for E. J. Korvettes of Watchung for 12 years before retiring 22 years ago.
She was a member of the Rosary Alter Society and the Catholic Golden Agers, both of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church.
Surviving are her husband, James San Giacomo; a daughter, Concetta Oley; two sisters, Lucy DiMauro and Theresa Attanasio; a brother, Thomas Santaniello, and three grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday, October 24, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church, following the funeral from the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Josephine Babst, 93
Josephine Babst, 93, of West Caldwell died on Saturday, October 7, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Irvington, Bloomfield and Fanwood before moving to West Caldwell last year.
Mrs. Babst had worked for Westinghouse in Bloomfield for 25 years before retiring in 1969.
Surviving are two daughters, Evelyn Keator and Lorraine Matthews; four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
A Mass was offered on Wednesday, October 11, at Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Bloomfield.
Arrangements were handled by the O’Boyle Funeral Home in Bloomfield.
