Sister Mary Whalen, 87
Former Teacher; With Sisters of Charity Nearly 70 Years
Sister Mary Dominic Whalen, 87, a native of Westfield, died on Friday, March 26, 1999 in St. Anne Villa in Convent Station.
A member of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth for 68 years, she had served for many years as an elementary and high school teacher, and later as an assistant librarian while semi-retired between 1989 and 1995.
Sister Mary Dominic was on the staff of various schools during her teaching career, including St. Patrick's in Newark, St. Mary's in Jersey City, Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Ridgewood, St. Mary's in Dumont and St. Teresa's in Summit, as well as East Orange Catholic High School, Essex Catholic Girls High School in Irvington and Marylawn of the Oranges Academy in South Orange.
After retiring to Seton Manor in Newark in 1989, she had assisted in the library of Sacred Heart School in Vailsburg until 1995.
Sister Mary Dominic received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the College of Saint Elizabeth in Convent Station, along with a state librarian's certificate.
Surviving are a sister, Sister Anita Agnes Whalen, and a brother, Michael Whalen.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, March 30, in St. Anne Villa Chapel in Convent Station.
Arrangements were handled by the William R. Dangler Funeral Home in Summit.
Robert Mooney
Was Local Lawyer; Retired Superior Court Judge
Robert J. T. Mooney, 77, died Tuesday, March 16, 1999 at his home in Williamsburg, Virginia.
Born in New Orleans, he had lived in Plainfield and Westfield for many years before moving to Williamsburg.
Mr. Mooney practiced law in New Jersey in both Plainfield and Westfield at Buttermore and Mooney until 1977 when he was appointed a Superior Court Judge. He retired from the bench in 1984.
He was a member of the Plainfield Country Club, Echo Lake Country Club, the Log Cabin Gun Club and a trustee for the Hartridge School.
He had graduated Perkiomen Prepartory School, Washington & Lee University and received his law degree from Harvard Law School.
He had served four years in the United States Army during World War II in the South Pacific as a First Lieutenant.
Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Parry Giles Mooney; a sister, Mary Elizabeth Brown of Peacham, Vermont; four children, Parry J. Mooney of Jacksonville, Florida, Charlotte L. Mooney of Charlotte, North Carolina, Elizabeth Mooney Bower of Falls Church, Virginia, and Joseph T. Mooney of San Antonio, Texas; and five grandchildren.
Funeral services were private.
Interment will be held in Peacham.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Building Fund of St. Bede's Church, Williamsburg, the James City County Rescue Squad, or Queen of Peace Church, in Danville, Vermont.
Alfred Santo Salvo, 85
Alfred Santo Salvo, 85, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Tuesday, March 23, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Mr. Salvo had worked for the Union County Road Department for 50 years before retiring in 1979.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are two sisters, Rose DiFrancesco and Esther Santo Salvo.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 27, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
Pearler L. Ford, 86
Pearler L. Ford, 86, a 52-year resident of Scotch Plains, died on Sunday, March 28, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
She was born in Cherokee County, South Carolina.
Mrs. Ford was a member of the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Scotch Plains for 54 years, where she was a member of the choir and the leader of the Crusaders Four Chorus.
Surviving are her husband, Paul L. Ford, and two brothers, Charles Harding, Sr., of Brooklyn, and Theodore Harding of China Grove, North Carolina.
A Funeral Service will be held today, Thursday, April 1, at 11 a.m. at Metropolitan Baptist Church.
Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of the church service.
Arrangements are being handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Charles Rasmussen, 54
Charles Rasmussen, 54, of Green Brook died on Wednesday, March 24, 1999 at home.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Green Brook 22 years ago.
Mr. Rasmussen had been a self-employed auto body worker with Razz's Auto Body in Plainfield for 20 years before retiring in 1978.
He was recently employed by Krupp Plastics in North Branch.
He was a member of the Middlesex Modelers Airplane Club.
Surviving are a daughter, Deborah Buono of Somerset; his mother, Helen Ligush of North Plainfield, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 30, at the Middlesex Funeral Home in Middlesex.
Susyn Davis-Reid, 51
Susyn Hewitt Davis-Reid, 51, of North Plainfield died on Sunday, March 21, 1999 at home.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to North Plainfield.
Miss Davis-Reid was a computer operator for the Prudential Insurance Company in North Plainfield.
She was a 1967 graduate of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School, and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.
She was predeceased by her father, James Hewitt, in 1991.
Surviving are her mother, Joan Robertson Hewitt; a sister, Kim Bonstein, and a brother, William Hewitt.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 27, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Walter Rozmierski, 84
Walter Rozmierski, 84, of Lakewood died on Wednesday, March 24, 1999 in the Leisure Park Nursing Home in Lakewood.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Lakewood.
Mr. Rozmierski had been a machinist with the Walworth Manufacturing Company in Linden before retiring.
He was a member of the Original Leisure Village Bowling Club in Lakewood.
Surviving are a daughter, Catherine Schwarz; a brother, Roman Rozmierski; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
A Mass was offered on Friday, March 26, in St. Dominic's Church in Brick, following the funeral from the Colonial Funeral Home in Brick.
Robert Hendry, 80
Was Electrician With Local No. 262 in Newark
Robert Hendry, 80, of Scotch Plains, died on Monday, March 29, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Scotland, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains 50 years ago.
He worked as an electrician for the international union I.B.O. Electrical Works, Local No. 262, in Newark until he retired in 1961.
He also was a member of the union.
He was a former communicant of the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church in North Plainfield.
He had served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II.
Mr. Hendry graduated from the Casey Jones Aeronautical School in 1945.
Surviving are his wife, Anges J. Miko Hendry.
