Sister Mary Visita, 90
Was Teacher; Had Also Been Secretary at College
Sister Mary Visita, 90, died on Friday, October 9, 1998 at McAuley Hall Health Care Center in Watchung.
Born Katherine McGuigan in Trenton, she entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1928.
She made her final profession on August 22, 1934.
Sister Mary Visita was a teacher at St. Nicholas School in Atlantic City from 1928 to 1931, and at St. James School in Red Bank from 1932 to 1934.
She then worked as a secretary at Georgian Court College in Lakewood from 1934 to 1948, and at St. Mary School in South Amboy from 1949 to 1973.
She had been a clerical assistant from 1973 to 1991 at the Mount St. Mary Academy Library in Watchung, and was a member of the Prayer Apostolate at McAuley Hall Health Care Center from 1991 to 1998.
She retired from full-time activity in January of 1980.
Surviving are a niece, Helen Ahern of Robbinsville, and a nephew, Joseph Dorsey of Wysox, Pennsylvania.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, October 13, at St. Catherine of Siena Chapel at McAuley Hall Health Care Center.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.

Irving Chernetz, 79
Served in Marines; Past Commander of Jewish War Veterans
Irving Chernetz, 79, of Westfield died on Friday, October 9, 1998 in Rahway Hospital.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Springfield and Long Branch before moving to Westfield three years ago.
Mr. Chernetz had been a sales associate for the Federal Wine and Liquor Company in Kearny for 47 years before retiring.
He served in the United States 1st Marine Division during World War II in the invasion of Guadalcanal in the Pacific Ocean.
Mr. Chernetz was a Past Commander of the Jewish War Veterans Post No. 10 in Jersey City, and a life member of both the First Marine Division Association and the Marine Corps League.
Surviving are a daughter, Bess Costa; a son, Joel Chernetz; two sisters, Sonia Casper and Miriam Chernetz, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, October 11, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Michael Cardona, 20
Michael M. Cardona, 20, a lifelong Scotch Plains resident, died on Monday, October 5, 1998 in an accident at the Netherwood Train Station in Plainfield.
Mr. Cardona was attending the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
Surviving are his parents, Regina and Joaquim Cardona, and three brothers, Richard Cardona, Joaquim Cardona and John Cholankeril.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday, October 13, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Theodore F. James, 45
Theodore F. “Teddy” James, 45, a lifelong resident of Plainfield, died on Tuesday, October 6, 1998 at home.
Mr. James was a sanitation technician for the Fanwood Disposal Company for 10 years.
Surviving are two brothers, Alexander James of Newark and Percell James, Jr. of Plainfield, and two sisters, Ethel Carter of Westfield and Aliese Nelson of Plainfield.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, October 10, at the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Marion Weinberg, 62
Scout Leader; Social Worker and School Teacher
Marion Weinberg, 62, of Fort Lee died on Wednesday, October 7, 1998 in the Wayne General Hospital in Wayne.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Westfield and Mountainside before moving to Fort Lee in 1993.
Mrs. Weinberg received a degree in sociology from Brooklyn College and a master’s degree in social work from Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
She was a counselor with the Employee Assistance Program for the United States Postal Service in Paterson for five years, and was also a part-time social worker for the Spring Lake Psychological Group for five years.
Prior to that, she had been a counselor with the New Jersey Unemployment Department and the Jewish Family Service Agency in Elizabeth, and was a social worker for the Union County Correctional Facility in Elizabeth.
She had also taught elementary school for the New York City and Elizabeth school systems.
Mrs. Weinberg was Vice President of the Westfield Chapter of the Women’s American Organization of Rehabilitation Through Training; a member of the National Council of Jewish Women, and a troop leader of the Mountainside Girl Scouts.
Surviving are two daughters, Bonnie Adelkopf and Beth Weinberg; a sister, Mendy Samstein, and a grandchild.
Funeral services were held on Friday, October 9, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Shirley Ann Fields, 47
Shirley Ann Fields, 47, of Plainfield, died Sunday, October 11, 1998 at home.
Born in Tokyo, she had lived in Piscataway before moving to Plainfield 15 years ago.
She was a member of the Church of God of Plainfield, where she sang in the choir and was an usher and assistant superintendent of its Sunday School.
She worked at Bell Atlantic in South Plainfield as a service analyst for 20 years.
Surviving are a daughter, Kristin D. Fields of Plainfield her stepmother, Fredda M. Briggs of Scotch Plains; three sisters, Joyce Harrison of Richmond, Virginia, Mary L. Briggs of Petersburg, Virginia and Darlene Snell of Middlesex.
Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 10 a.m. at Church of God in Plainfield.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, October 16, at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Judkins Colonial Home of Plainfield.
Ulysses Lee, 77
Local Elks Member; Was Usher at Bethel Baptist Church
Ulysses Lee, 77, of Plainfield died on Monday, November 9, 1998 at Robert Wood Johnson Nursing Center.
Born in Camden, South Carolina, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Plainfield 40 years ago.
He was an usher and member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield for 50 years.
Mr. Lee had been a forklift operator at General Motors Corporation in Linden for 38 years, retiring in 1990.
He was a member of the United Auto Workers Local No. 595 in Linden, the Centennial Lodge Independent Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks of the World 400 in Westfield, and of the Plainfield Senior Citizens’ Service Program.
Surviving are five sons, Keith Lee of Atlanta and Bobby McLean, Tyrone McLean, Michael McLean and Nicholas McLean, all of Plainfield; seven daughters, Mary L. McNair, Darlene Lee and Dawn Lee, all of Atlanta, Judy L. Harrington of Westfield and Veronica McLean, Victoria McLean and Bettina McLean of Plainfield; a brother, Boykin Lee of Paterson; two sisters, Eva Frederick of Plainfield and Laura Atkins of Camden, South Carolina; 21 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, November 13, at the Bethel Baptist Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Gloria Martin, 78
Earned Commendation For 30 Years of Service as Crossing Guard
Gloria J. Martin, 78, of Westfield died on Saturday, November 14, 1998 at the Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.
Born in Brooklyn, she grew up in East Orange and moved to Westfield in 1950.
Mrs. Martin had been a crossing guard in Westfield for 30 years, and received a commendation upon her retirement earlier this year.
She was predeceased by her husband, George Martin, in 1977.
Surviving are three sons, Richard Martin and Glenn Martin, both of Westfield, and George Martin of Edison; a sister, Rose Mulvaney of Verona; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services took place on Tuesday, November 17, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Interment was private.
