William Scholz, 77
William Scholz, 77, of Mountainside died on Saturday, September 26, 1998 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Romania, he had lived in Maplewood before moving to Mountainside 36 years ago.
Mr. Scholz, a butcher, had owned the Hillside Pork Store in Hillside for 30 years before retiring in 1986.
He was a two-term President of the Hillside Lions Club and also served as Zone Chairman for District No. 16E of Lions International.
Surviving are his wife of 46 years, Herta Scholz; a son, Rudolf Scholz; a brother, Adolf Scholz, and two grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, September 29, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Arrangements were handled by the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.
Rosemary Quinn
Owned Quinn Realty; Was Real Estate Broker for Over 30 Years
Rosemary Quinn, 78, of Westfield died on Friday, September 25, 1998 in the home of her daughter, Jacqueline Quinn Palmer, in Yardley, Pennsylvania.
Born in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania, she had lived in Westfield for many years.
Mrs. Quinn had been a real estate broker in Westfield for more than 30 years.
She had owned and operated Quinn Realty in Westfield, together with her late husband, James F. Quinn, Sr., for eight years before her retirement.
She was a WAVE in the United States Navy during World War II.
Also surviving are another daughter, Maribeth Quinn Giovinazzo; a son, James F. Quinn, Jr.; a sister, Ann Ehrlich, and five grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, September 29, in St. Lawrence Church in North Catasauqua following the funeral from the John H. Brubaker Funeral Home in Catasauqua.
Helene Glass Briant, 69
Helene Glass Briant, 69, of Westfield died on Saturday, September 26, 1998 at home.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Edison before moving to Westfield 32 years ago.
Mrs. Briant was a homemaker. She was a communicant of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield, and was a member of the Westfield Art Association.
She was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Briant.
Surviving are four sons, Robert Briant of Hillsborough, Ray Briant of Cranford, Tim Briant of Westfield and Peter Briant of Edison; two daughters, Laura Venturo of Point Pleasant and Mary Meyner of Bound Brook; a brother, Robert Kelly of the Whitehouse Station section of Readington; a sister, Raye Berthelson of St. Helena Island, South Carolina, and nine grandchildren.
A Memorial Mass was held yesterday, Wednesday, September 30, at the Holy Trinity Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Funeral Service of New Jersey, Inc. in Hillside.

Alfred H. Lusardi
Army Veteran; Was Fire Equipment Repairman
Alfred H. Lusardi, 79, of Plainfield died on Saturday, September 26, 1998 at The Soldiers’ Home in Menlo Park.
Born and raised in Westfield, he had lived in Plainfield since 1947.
Mr. Lusardi had been a fire equipment repairman at New Jersey Fire Equipment Company Inc. in Green Brook before retiring.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, having served with the Medical Corps.
He was a member of St. Stanislaus Roman Catholic Church in Plainfield, and a member of the Plainfield area Storr-Richie Post No. 506 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Graveside services took place yesterday, Wednesday, September 30, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Scarpa Funeral Home of North Plainfield.
Sophie Schlachtun, 78
Sophie Schlachtun, 78, of Las Vegas died on Monday, September 14, 1998 in Valley Hospital in Las Vegas.
Born in Charleston, West Virginia, she had lived South Plainfield and Scotch Plains before moving to Las Vegas 30 years ago.
She had been the owner and operator of a plastics company before her retirement.
Surviving are two daughters, Sonia Schreyack of Grafton, Massachusetts and Sandy Thompson of Pittsburgh; a son, Charles Schlachtun of Las Vegas; three sisters, Anna Stefko of Lavallette, Helen Popadiuk of Raritan Borough and Catherine Halasz of Highland Park; two brothers, John Buyachek of Las Vegas and Michael Buyachek of North Plainfield; seven grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Palm Mortuary of Las Vegas.
Danny Pastore, 70
Danny Pastore, 70, of Mountainside died on Tuesday, September 29, 1998 at home.
Born in Summit, he had lived in Union before moving to Mountainside in 1964.
Mr. Pastore had owned and operated J. Pastore & Son, Inc., a Union paving contracting company, for 45 years before retiring two years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Anna Pastore; a daughter, Ann Marie Pastore; a sister, Josephine Alacco, and five grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass will be offered on Saturday October 3, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Teresa of Avila Roman Catholic Church in Summit.
Arrangements are being handled by the Paul Ippolito Summit Memorial in Summit.
Caroline Broaddus, 92
Caroline Elizabeth Catherine Broaddus, 92, of Westfield died on Monday, September 28, 1998 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Maryland, she had moved to Westfield at age 6.
She attended Westfield schools and was a longtime member of St. Luke African Methodist Episcopal Church in Westfield.
Mrs. Broaddus was predeceased by her husband, George D. Broaddus.
Surviving are two nieces, Grace Coles of Plainfield and Elaine Keet of Scotch Plains; and two nephews, Jack Keet of Georgia and Ernestine Lambert of Westfield.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, October 2, at 1 p.m. at St. Luke Church in Westfield.
Visitation is from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, October 1, at the church.
Arrangements are being handled by the Plinton-Curry Funeral Homes in Westfield.
Mary Peterson, 64
Child Care Provider; Member of Bethel Baptist Gospel Chorus
Mary Mae Peterson, 64, of Westfield died on Saturday, September 26, 1998 at the Berkeley Heights Convalescent Home in Berkeley Heights.
Born in Alberta, Virginia, she lived there before moving to Westfield 21 years ago.
Ms. Peterson was a child care provider and a licensed beautician.
She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield and was also a member of the church’s gospel chorus.
Surviving are a daughter, Joann Peterson Tyler; a granddaughter, and two step-grandsons.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, October 2, at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Baptist Church. Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. today, Thursday, October 1, at Plinton-Curry Funeral Homes in Westfield, and from 7 to 9 p.m. tonight at the church.
Chester Batog, 81
Rescue Squad Member; Had Been Machine Operator for 50 Years
Chester J. “Chet” Batog, 81, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, September 29, 1998 in the Abbott Manor Convalescent Center in Plainfield.
Born in Plainfield, he had lived in South Plainfield before moving to Scotch Plains in 1941.
Mr. Batog had been a machine operator for 50 years at Thul Machine Works in Plainfield prior to retiring in 1991.
He was a member of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains and had served as its Minister of Hospitality.
Mr. Batog was a member of the Scotch Plains Volunteer Rescue Squad and the South Plainfield Polish Home.
He was also a coordinator for Scotch Plains golf leagues.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ann Lestarchick Batog, in 1990.
Surviving are three sisters, Helen Veracco, Adele Myzie and Mary Mazepa.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, October 1, at 9 a.m. at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Bartholomew Church.
