Edward Boykin, 77
Edward “Eddie” Boykin, 77, a lifelong Scotch Plains resident, died on Sunday, September 27, 1998 at home.
He had been a truck driver for the Castleway Trucking Company for 30 years before retiring.
Surviving are six sons, Bruce Boykin, Melvin Boykin, Curtis Boykin, Dennies Boykin, Howard Boykin and David Boykin; four daughters, Patricia Boykin, Debra Boykin, Suzan Boykin and Cyndy Boykin; two brothers, Marion Boykin of Plainfield and William Boykin of Scotch Plains; two sisters, Ella Coles and Annabell McCoy of Scotch Plains; 20 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services were held yesterday, Wednesday, September 30, at the Plinton-Curry Funeral Homes in Westfield.
Helen J. Yastine, 79
Helen J. Yastine, 79, of Westfield died on Sunday, September 27, 1998 at home.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Garwood before moving to Westfield in 1962.
Miss Yastine was a 1941 graduate of the Capitol City School of Nursing in Washington, D. C.
Miss Yastine had been a registered nurse for the Woodbridge Developmental Center for many years before retiring in 1991.
Previously, she had worked in the same capacity for Runnells Specialized Hospital in Berkeley Heights.
She served in the United States Navy with the WAVES during World War II.
A Funeral Mass will be offered tomorrow, Friday, October 2, at 10 a.m. in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Dorothy Robinson, 76
Dorothy “Dot” Robinson, 76, of Plainfield died on Monday, September 28, 1998 at the Robert Wood Johnson Healthcare Center.
Born in Gatesville, North Carolina, she had lived in Plainfield for more than 70 years.
Miss Robinson had worked at the Singer Sewing Machine Company in Elizabeth for many years before retiring in 1981.
She had previously worked as a presser at Mignella Cleaners in Plainfield and at Paul’s Dry Cleaners in North Plainfield.
Surviving are four nieces, Patricia Boykin and Cyndy Boykin, both of Plainfield, Debra Boykin of Merritt Island, Florida and Suzan Boykin of Scotch Plains, and five nephews, Melvin Robinson and Curtis Boykin, Dennies Boykin, Howard Boykin and David Boykin, all of Plainfield.
Visitation will take place today, Thursday, October 1, at 10 a.m. at Brown’s Funeral Home in Plainfield, followed by an 11 a.m. service at the funeral home.
Beatrice Boublis
Local Scout Leader; Lord & Taylor Sales Representative
Beatrice L. Boublis, 67, of Westfield died on Sunday, September 27, 1998 at home.
Born in Union, she had lived in Ocean Grove and Clark before moving to Westfield in 1972.
She had been a sales representative at the Lord & Taylor department store in Westfield for 10 years prior to retiring in 1992.
Previously, Mrs. Boublis had been a nurse for Dr. Miles S. Winder in Asbury Park for 20 years.
She was a Past President of the Women’s Club of Ocean Township, and was a volunteer at Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County in Berkeley Heights, where she was awarded a 2000-hour pin.
Mrs. Boublis was also active as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader with Troop No. 696 of Westfield.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Surviving are her husband, Samuel Boublis; a daughter, B. Laura Boublis, and a brother, Karl Lachenauer.
A Memorial Mass will be offered at noon on Saturday, October 3, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Funeral Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.
Susan M. Wagner, 34
Senior Clerk; Had Worked for Area Libraries
Susan M. Wagner, 34, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, September 28, 1998 in the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Woodbridge before moving to Scotch Plains in 1996.
Miss Wagner was a senior clerk in the housekeeping department for the Woodbridge Developmental Center for 10 years.
Prior to that, she had worked at the Colonia and Woodbridge libraries.
She was a member of the Little People of America and the World Wildlife Federation.
Surviving are her parents, Richard P. and Eileen M. Wagner; a sister, Catherine Schaffner; three brothers, Thomas R. Wagner, Timothy J. Wagner and Michael J. Wagner, and her grandmothers, Helen Brennan and Catherine Wagner.
A Funeral Mass will be offered tomorrow, Friday, October 2, at 10 a.m. in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements are being handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
James A. DeCastro, 55
Held Boat License; Self-Employed in Retail Automotive Trade
James A. DeCastro, 55, of Mountainside died on Monday, September 28, 1998 at his summer home in Curtis Point.
Born in Bound Brook, he had moved to Mountainside 20 years ago.
Mr. DeCastro was self-employed in the retail automotive trade.
He was a life member of the Union County 200 Club and was a state-licensed small craft and boat captain.
Surviving are his wife, Patrice DiFabio DeCastro; a son, James A. DeCastro, Jr. of Mountainside; two daughters, Christine DeCastro and Gina DeCastro, both of Mountainside; his mother, Carmella DeCastro of Bound Brook; two brothers, Robert DeCastro of Bridgewater and George DeCastro of Ocean Township, and two sisters, Louise DeCastro and Angela Robinson, both of Bound Brook.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow, Friday, October 2, at 9 a.m. at the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Visitation is from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, October 1, at the funeral home.
Theodore Engert, 63
Electrical Engineer; Worked in Management Position at Lucent
Theodore P. Engert, 63, of Mountainside died on Monday, June 28, 1999 at home.
Born in New York City, he had lived in The Bronx before moving to Mountainside 32 years ago.
Mr. Engert had worked in management for Lucent Technologies in Berkeley Heights before retiring in 1990.
Previously, he had been employed by Western Electric and AT&T in Manhattan and at several locations in New Jersey.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Manhattan College and took graduate courses at Brooklyn Poly Tech.
He was a member of the New Jersey Canoe Club and the Sierra Club.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy J. Engert; two sons, Philip T. Engert and Thomas J. Engert; three daughters, Gail M. Engert, Carolyn R. Peryea and Elizabeth E. Manzo, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 29, in the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung.
Dorothy Wittke, 87
Dorothy Taylor Wittke, 87, of Point Pleasant died on Thursday, June 24, 1999 in Brick Hospital in Brick Township.
Born in East Orange, she had lived in Westfield before relocating to the New Jersey Shore area.
She lived in the Point Pleasant and Bay Head areas since 1941.
Mrs. Wittke was a member of the Bay Head Yacht Club, the Sea Weeders Garden Club in Bay Head and the New Jersey Golf Association.
She was a former member of the Manasquan River Golf Club in Brielle and the Echo Lake Country Club in Westfield, and was Past President and an honorary member of the Westfield Service League.
Surviving are her husband of 62 years, John Mills Wittke, a former Commodore of the Bay Head Yacht Club; a daughter, Gail Houston of Wilmington, Delaware; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Wednesday, June 30, at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Bay Head.
