Georgiana ‘Jo’ Dobyns, 72
Volunteer; Was Recognized as Community Leader
Georgiana Marie “Jo” Dobyns, 72, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born January 20, 1927 in Maplewood, she grew up in Irvington and later lived there again for several years before settling in Scotch Plains in 1957.
Mrs. Dobyns studied to be a dental hygienist at the University of Missouri in Kansas City while her husband was attending dental school there.
They returned to New Jersey after his graduation and eventually settled in Scotch Plains.
Active with the Fanwood-Scotch Plains YMCA since 1968, she was a member of the Board of Directors, the Board of Trustees, and Endowment Committee.
She also served as Vice President of Membership, Board of Directors Secretary, and Chairwoman of the annual spring Sustaining Membership Drives for many years, the Family, Youth and Adult Committee, World Service Committee, Financial Development Committee and the yearly Support Campaign Committee.
She was also a division leader in the Building Fund Campaign for the Martine Avenue “Y.”
She was recognized by the YMCA many times for her service, at annual dinners and with special awards.
She was a Charter Member, along with her husband, of the organization’s Heritage Club.
As Community Chairwoman for the American Cancer Society Drive in 1965, Mrs. Dobyns organized 500 volunteers into 15 districts with five chairpersons.
Her efforts exceeded the campaign goal of $4,600 which had been set by the Scotch Plains Cancer Crusade.
She continued to work for many years afterward on behalf of the Cancer Society.
Mrs. Dobyns was Secretary of the Citizens Advisory Committee.
She also worked with the American Red Cross’s blood drives for local needy children; planned fundraisers to benefit those with leukemia, and raised money and organized activities for the “Two Worlds Foster Home for Children.”
In addition, she and her husband hosted needy children from urban areas for long weekends at their home, and sponsored a French high school student for a year.
Mrs. Dobyns was active with the Scotch Plains Community Fund in various capacities for 20 years.
She was also a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield, where she and her husband taught Sunday school, and was active in the Scotch Plains Republican Party, the Shackamaxon Elementary Parent Teacher Association, the American Field Service Club, the Scotch Plains Women’s Club and the Ladies Golf Association of the Scotch Hills Country Club.
She additionally was a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader.
She was recognized in 1971 as a Community Leader of America by the publication of the same name for her long service to the community and state.
Mrs. Dobyns served as Executive Secretary of the New Jersey Academy of General Dentistry, a professional organization co-founded by her husband.
Her role included preparing newsletters, and arranging for speakers from throughout the world to come to New Jersey and lecture to the membership.
Mrs. Dobyns took her first paid position when she worked with Fred Chemidlin at Family Investors in Fanwood. She retired two years ago.
Surviving are her husband of 53 years, Dr. Richard W. Dobyns; three daughters, Lynn Takach of LaCrosse, Wisconsin, Kathleen Watt of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania and Susan Barbato of Tarpon Springs, Florida; two sons, Dr. Mark Dobyns of Wichita, Kansas and Richard Dobyns, 2nd of LaCrosse, Wisconsin; four sisters, Ann Carrara of New Providence, Marie Dudzinski of Milford, Pennsylvania, Mildred Oprysk of Toms River and Angela deBerjeois of Berkeley Heights, and six grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at St. Paul’s Church on Saturday, July 3.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Noreen Reedell, 43
Noreen Reedell, 43, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, July 1, 1999 in the Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Middlesex, Piscataway and Ohio before moving to Scotch Plains in 1997.
Surviving are her husband, Gary R. Reedell; two sons, Kevin Reedell and Dan Reedell, and a daughter, Katie Reedell.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, July 6, in St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Gertrude V. Condon, 88
Gertrude V. Condon, 88, of Indian Harbor Beach, Florida died on Tuesday, June 29, 1999 in the Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, Florida.
Born in West Orange, she had lived in Mountainside before moving to Central Florida in 1978.
Mrs. Condon was a supporter of the Florida Sanctuary Wildlife Hospital.
Surviving are two daughters, Lorraine Grossmueller and Trude Bonas; a son, Raymond Condon; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Friday, July 2, in the Holy Name of Jesus Church in Melbourne.
Arrangements were handled by the Brownlie-Maxwell Funeral Home in Melbourne.
Elizabeth Naulty, 73
Dean of Admissions At Chatham College in Pennsylvania
Elizabeth Ann Naulty, 73, of Mountainside died on Thursday, June 24, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Manchester, New Hampshire, she had lived in Westfield for 30 years before moving to Mountainside 14 years ago.
She earned a bachelor’s degree from Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, Florida, and a master’s degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.
Mrs. Naulty had been the Dean of Admissions at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for several years before retiring.
She was a member of the College Woman’s Club of Westfield, the Auxiliary of Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside, and the Foothills Club, also in Mountainside.
She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Westfield.
Surviving are her husband, Leslie Naulty; a daughter, Sharon Naulty of Manhattan; two sons, Sherburne Naulty of Gillette and Robert Naulty of North Plainfield, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Monday, June 28, at the First Congregational Church.
Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to the College Woman’s Club of Westfield Scholarship Fund.
David Alan Hill, 84
Chemical Engineer At Whitlock Cord Company, Jersey City
David Alan Hill, 84, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Westfield, he lived in Scotch Plains for the past 30 years.
Mr. Hill had been a chemical engineer with the Whitlock Cord Company of Jersey City before retiring in 1978.
He was later self-employed as a fishing equipment supplier until he retired in 1984.
He played the trombone for many years with the Doctors Band of Overlook Hospital.
He was a communicant of The Presbyterian Church in Westfield.
Mr. Hill earned a degree in engineering from Duke University in Durham, North Carolina in 1935.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marjorie Hill, in 1987.
Surviving are his stepson, Gordon Nobbs of New Providence, and several nephews and cousins.
A funeral service was held on Friday, July 2, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Ida Younghans, 95
Was Homemaker; Member of Several Women’s Clubs
Ida M. Greer Younghans, 95, of Bricktown died on Saturday, July 3, 1999 at the home of her daughter, Lois Cameron, in Plainfield.
Born and raised in Newark, she had lived in Westfield for 25 years and in Mountainside for 27 years before moving to Bricktown in 1987.
Mrs. Younghans was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Women’s Club of Westfield, the Bricktown Women’s Club, the Amity Club of Westfield, and the Watchung Girl Scouts.
She was also a member of the Holy Trinity Parent-Teacher Association in Westfield, the Our Lady of Lourdes Rosary Society in Mountainside, and several bridge clubs.
She graduated in 1923 from the Drake School of Business in Newark.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry T. Younghans; her son, Robert D. Younghans, and two grandchildren.
Surviving, in addition to her daughter, are a son, Paul F. Younghans of Green Brook; two other daughters, Arline Strube of Clinton and Marilyne Morris of Bricktown; a sister, Marion Kopf of Port Judith, Rhode Island; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was held yesterday, Wednesday, July 7, at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside.
Burial took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Estella Seybold, 103
Estella F. Seybold, 103, of Sewell died on Wednesday, June 30, 1999 at the Health Care Center at Washington in Washington Township.
Born in Dayton, Ohio in August of 1895, she moved to Westfield in 1934.
She later lived in Scotch Plains from 1955 to 1987, when she relocated to Sewell.
A graduate of Miami University in Ohio, Mrs. Seybold had been a teacher in the Ohio school system before retiring in the 1920s.
She was a member of the Messiah Lutheran Church in Plainfield for many years, where she was also a member of the Ladies Aid Society.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frederick W. Seybold, in 1987.
Surviving are her son, Charles Seybold of Sewell; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 6, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Judy Lorraine Bell, 39
Was Technician In Food Service Industry for 10 Years
Judy Lorraine Bell, 39, of Newark died on Thursday, July 1, 1999 in Newark.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Newark six months ago.
She was a food service technician for 10 years, working for various organizations in the Union County area.
Surviving are a son, Kenman Bell of Perth Amboy; her father, Willie S. Bell, Sr. of Scotch Plains; her stepmother, Maxine Bell of Scotch Plains; a sister, Kim Bell of Atlanta; a stepsister, the Reverend Danielle Alston of Scotch Plains; three brothers, Willie Bell, Jr. and Keith Bell, both of Plainfield, and Anthony Bell of Scotch Plains; her maternal grandmother, Artimeece Reid of Savannah, Georgia; her paternal grandfather, Vertie Bivell of Clearwater, Florida, and a granddaughter.
A funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, July 7, at the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
