Navy Lieutenant; Employed In International Marketing
Gordon Kennedy Reese, 82, of Fanwood died on Sunday, June 27, 1999 at Woodlands Genesis ElderCare Center in Plainfield.
Born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, he lived in Fanwood since 1950.
Mr. Reese was employed in International Marketing with the United States Department in Washington, D.C. before retiring in 1970.
He also worked with General Motors, Pfizer and Bon Ami, all of New York.
He was a member of the Westfield Tennis Association.
He graduated from the University of Virginia in 1940.
He served as a Lieutenant with the U.S. Navy before retiring in 1945.
Surviving are his son, Gordon K. Reese, Jr. of Sacramento, California; a daughter, Sally Anderson of West Tisbury, Massachusetts; a sister, Anne Taylor of Ridgewood and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were private.
Memorial donations may be made to a personal charity.
Louis D. Mecadon, 86
Former Plumber At Ciba-Geigy in Summit for 30 Years
Louis D. Mecadon, 86, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, July 1, 1999 at home.
Born in Pittston, Pennsylvania he had lived in South Orange before settling in Scotch Plains in 1960.
Mr. Mecadon had been a plumber for the maintenance department of Ciba-Geigy in Summit for 30 years before retiring in 1978.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hillside and a communicant of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are his wife, Tina Ferri Mecadon; two daughters, Gloria Simons and Jeanette Coan; seven brothers; three sisters; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, July 3, at the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains, followed by a Mass at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Haven Hospice, 65 James Street, Edison, 08818, or to the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Abraham Yablon, 90
Former Dentist Practiced in Plainfield; Was Army Veteran
Dr. Abraham Yablon, 90, of Westfield died on Thursday, July 1, 1999 in the Ashbrook Nursing Home in Scotch Plains.
Born in Philadelphia, he had lived in Plainfield before moving to Westfield in 1975.
A dentist for 50 years, Dr. Yablon had maintained a practice in Plainfield before retiring in 1985.
He was a member of the American Dental Association and the New Jersey Dental Society.
Dr. Yablon served as a Post Commander of the Jewish War Veterans of Plainfield.
He graduated from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Bernice Yablon; a daughter, Norma Jean Yablon; a son, Melvyn Yablon, and a sister, Anne Jacobson.
A graveside service was held on Tuesday, July 6, in the Beth David Cemetery in Kenilworth.
Arrangements were handled by Kreitzman’s Memorial Home in Union.
Luisa Rivera, 81
Luisa Rosado Rivera, 81, of Westfield died on Sunday, July 4, 1999 in Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County in Berkeley Heights.
A native of Havana, Cuba, she came to the United States in 1961 and settled in Astoria, Queens. She moved to Westfield in 1988.
Mrs. Rivera had been a secretary for Perry and Koplik and Sons in New York City for eight years before retiring in 1988.
She was predeceased by her husband, Gus Rivera.
Surviving are two sons, Gus Rivera of Mount Carmel, Pennsylvania and Ignacio Rivera of Westfield, and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered today, Thursday, July 8, at 10 a.m. in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Burial will be at Maple Grove Cemetery in Queens.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Grace S. Boyle, 87
Was Bookkeeper For Former Berse Car Dealership
Grace Savoye Boyle, 87, of Elizabeth died on Monday, July 5, 1999 at Elizabeth General Hospital.
Born in New York, she had lived in Westfield before moving to Elizabeth several years ago.
Mrs. Boyle was a bookkeeper for Berse Brothers, a former car dealership in Westfield.
She was an active volunteer in the American Red Cross and transcribed Braille for the group’s Elizabeth Chapter.
She was also a member of the Audubon Society.
She graduated from New York University with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.
Surviving are a son, Lawrence H. Boyle of Fairfield, Connecticut; two granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held tomorrow, Friday, July 9, at 11 a.m. at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street, Westfield.
Interment will be private.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Red Cross, Elizabeth Chapter.
HANDZA, George E., Sr., age 82

Beloved husband of Jean (Nee Linder).
Devoted father of George Jr. and Thomas. Dear brother of Betty Handza.
Also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah Jane, Tommy, Woody and Tara.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, July 24, between the hours of 68 pm at Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick, New Jersey, with a service to be held at 7 p.m.
George E. Handza, Sr., 82
Local Coach; Worked in Engineering Field for 45 Years
George E. Handza, Sr., 82, of Brick died on Sunday, July 18, 1999 at Brick Hospital in Brick.
Born in Bayonne, he had lived in Westfield before moving to Brick six years ago.
Mr. Handza had worked for 45 years in the field of engineering design and construction before retiring in 1984.
He had been employed by M. W. Kellogg, Chemico Construction, Union Carbide Coalcon, all of New York, and Texas Eastern-Duke Energy in New York and Houston, Texas.
He had worked on major industrial plants around the world, including LNG1 Plant in Arzew, Algeria.
In addition, he played a major role in a $1 billion clean boiler fuel project for the Department of Energy.
Mr. Handza was a Technical Sergeant in the United States Army during World War II.
He earned an engineering degree from Columbia University in New York University.
He was a member of the Bayonne Elks Lodge and the Bayonne Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Handza was a coach and official for the Police Athletic League in Bayonne for the Build Better Boys Basketball Association.
He was very active in Little League in Westfield as an organizer and coach, and was instrumental in starting Westfield Basketball.
Surviving are his wife, Jean Linder Handza; two sons, George E. Handza, Jr. of Westfield and Thomas Handza of Voorhees; a sister, Betty Handza of Bayonne, and four grandchildren.
A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, July 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Colonial Funeral Home, 2170 Highway 88, Brick, with a service at 7 p.m.
Arrangements were handled by the Colonial Funeral Home of Brick.
Harry T. Yessman, 67
Marine Veteran Of Korean War; Carpenter in Local Union
Harry T. Yessman, 67, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, July 16, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, he moved to Scotch Plains 40 years ago.
Mr. Yessman was employed for the Essex County Carpenters’ and Millwrights Union Local No. 1342 for 46 years, before retiring in 1994.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Father Nelligan Council of Scotch Plains.
He was also active for many years in the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Little League, Junior Raiders football and Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) basketball.
He was a moderator of St. Bartholomew’s CYO for many years.
He served in the United States Marines during the Korean War.
Surviving are his wife, Mickey Hanna Yessman; three sons, Timothy M. Yessman of West Hartford, Connecticut, Peter T. Yessman of Scotch Plains and Thomas J. Yessman of Bridgewater; one daughter, Patricia E. Berrios of Yonkers, New York; one sister, Elaine Lang of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and six grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, July 20, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
