Gloria Bonavita, 73
Gloria Bonavita, 73, of Scotch Plains died on Sunday, July 18, 1999 at home.
Born in Brooklyn, she lived in Carteret before moving to Scotch Plains in 1973.
Mrs. Bonavita was active with the Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School Parent-Teacher Association and was a member of the Kessler Institute Ladies Auxiliary in South Orange.
Surviving are her husband, Gus Bonavita; two daughters, Janis Billon and Lucia Bonavita; two sons, August Bonavita and Anthony Bonavita; a sister, Claire Norris; two brothers, Nelson Zuppa and William Zuppa; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held yesterday, Wednesday, July 21, in Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Madeline Ryan, 87
Operated and Owned Willow Coffee Shop in Scotch Plains
Madeline Louise Meyer Ryan, 87, died on Monday, July 19, 1999 at Community Memorial Hospital in Toms River.
Born and raised in Scotch Plains, she lived in Linden and Rahway before moving back to Scotch Plains in 1979.
Mrs. Ryan owned and operated the Sweet Shop in Linden in the 1950s.
She later owned and operated the Willow Coffee Shop in Scotch Plains.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Scotch Plains, the Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign War, Post No. 10122 in Scotch Plains, the West Mount Chapter of Deborah Hospital and the Scotch Plains Historical Society.
She received the “Outstanding Senior Citizen of the Year Award” in 1989.
She was predeceased by a daughter, Mae E. Backovsky, in 1976.
Surviving are three sons, William Warren Ryan, Jr. of Rahway, John Raymond Ryan of Lanoko Harbor, and Richard Charles Ryan of Clark; a brother, Arthur Meyer of Scotch Plains; 11 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren, and 13 great-great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Service will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood, tomorrow, Friday, July 23, at 9 a.m.
Interment will be at Rosedale Memorial Park in Linden.
Calling hours will be today, Thursday, July 22, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 1171 Terrill Road, Scotch Plains, 07076.
Rose Ann Barclay, 75
Was Secretary For Department of Special Services
Rose Ann Caldwell Barclay, 75, of Plainfield died on Sunday, July 4, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Plainfield 27 years ago.
Mrs. Barclay was a secretary for the Department of Special Services for the Westfield Board of Education, before retiring in 1986.
Prior to that, she was a secretary for the Department of Special Services for the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Board of Education.
She had attended Seton Hall University in South Orange.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mansfield Spencer “Red” Barclay, in 1992.
Surviving are her daughter, Susan Barclay-Kilduff of Plainfield; her son, William Gavin Barclay of Atlantic Highlands; her sister, Elizabeth Lynch of New South Berlin, New York, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services and interment will be private.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
Memorial donations may be made to the Plainfield Rescue Squad in Plainfield.
Edward P. Pinkman, 72
Was Director Of Human Resources For Hoechst A.G.
Edward P. Pinkman, 72, of Montclair and Spring Lake Heights died on Thursday, July 8, 1999 at the Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune.
Born in Newark, he lived in Roselle and Westfield before moving to Montclair three years ago and maintaining a residence in Spring Lake Heights.
Mr. Pinkman was a director of human resources for Hoechst A.G. in Bridgewater, before retiring 10 years ago.
He also worked with the New Jersey Chapter of the United Way and the Right to Life Organization for several years.
He earned a bachelor’s degree at Seton Hall University and a master’s degree in psychology from Bowling Green State University.
He served in the U.S. Army where he received the Victory Medal.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Ann Bock Pinkman, in 1990.
Surviving are his second wife, Ann Margaret McMillan Pinkman of Spring Lake Heights; four sons, Paul Pinkman of Plainfield, Mark Pinkman of Austin, Texas, James Pinkman of Mountainside and Andrew Pinkman of Austin, Texas; three daughters, Christine Ehly San Diego, California, Karen Pinkman of Mountainside and Mary Ellen Pinkman of Palm Springs, California; a brother, John Pinkman of Spring Lake Heights and a sister, Margaret Murray of Bloomfield.
A Funeral Mass was celebrated on Monday, July 12, at St. Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Spring Lake.
Interment was held at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall.
Memorial donations may be made to the Right to Life Organization and the United Way of Somerset County.
Mary Misko, 74,
Mary Kudelko Misko, 74, of Brick died on Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at Brick Hospital.
Born in Newark, she lived in North Plainfield and Somerville before moving to Brick 23 years ago.
Mrs. Misko was a secretary. She was a member of St. Dominic’s Roman Catholic Church in Brick.
Surviving are her husband, Andrew Misko and two sisters, Olga Stack of Manville and Irene Bednarz of Westfield.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, July 12, at St. Dominic’s Church.
Interment was held at the Brigadier General William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Arnytown.
Arrangements were handled by the Colonial Funeral Home in Brick.
Memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Rocco Macalle, 64
Self-Employed Tailor in Westfield For 18 Years
Rocco Macalle, 64, of Watchung died on Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Silvi Passe Abruzzi, Italy, he lived in Irvington and Gillette before moving to Watchung 15 years ago.
Mr. Macalle was a self-employed tailor in Westfield, known as “Rocky the Tailor” for 18 years, before retiring in 1997.
Surviving are his wife, Lucia Monticello Macalle; three sons, Galliano Macalle of Bryan, Texas, Michael Macalle of Watchung and Giovanni Macalle of Watchung and two brothers and five sisters in Italy.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, July 12, at St. Vincent De Paul Roman Catholic Church in Stirling.
Arrangements were handled by Valley Memorial Funeral Home in Gillette.
Frances C. Steber, 82
Frances C. Natoli Steber, 82, of Westfield died on Friday, July 9, 1999 in the Passaic General Hospital.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Brooklyn, Jersey City and Fairlawn before moving to Westfield 10 years ago.
Surviving are two daughters, Terry Pallarino of Westfield and Carolyn Coombes of Fairlawn; a sister, Josephine Damillio of Pennsylvania and three grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, July 12, in St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment was held at Calvary Cemetery in New York.
Arrangements were handled by Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West in Cranford.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Fairlawn Rescue Squad.
Mary Enz, 83
Mary Holuta Enz, 83, of Cranford died on Wednesday, July 7, 1999 at home.
Born in Garwood, she lived in Mountainside before moving to Cranford in 1953.
Mrs. Enz was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Atlas Chapter No. 99 in Westfield and the Senior Citizens Club in Garwood.
She was predeceased by her husband, Richard Enz, in 1979.
Surviving are two sons, Mark Enz of Irvington and Emery Enz of Cranford and a daughter, Gail Powell of Ponice Inlet, Florida.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 12, at the Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Avenue, West in Cranford.
Order of the Easter Star services were held on Sunday, July 11.
