Eugene P. Mulkeen, 86
Former Executive At Johansen Company in South Plainfield
Eugene P. Mulkeen, 86, of Westfield died on Thursday, January 7, 1999 at home.
Born in Woburn, Massachusetts, he lived in Westfield for many years.
Mr. Mulkeen had worked for the Johansen Company in South Plainfield for 30 years before retiring in 1982 as the Executive Vice President.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Gertrude Mulkeen; a daughter, Susan Mulkeen, and a brother, Richard Mulkeen.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Tuesday, January 12, at the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.

Jerome Oppenheim, 68
Jerome H. Oppenheim, 68, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, January 9, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Springfield before moving to Scotch Plains 20 years ago.
Mr. Oppenheim had been a certified public accountant with M. D. Oppenheim, a family-owned accounting business in Piscataway, for more than 25 years before retiring in 1976.
He graduated in 1954 from Pace University in New York with a degree in accounting, and was awarded his certified public accounting certificate the same year.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Carol Oppenheim; a daughter, Roberta Bamberger; a son, David Oppenheim; a sister, Joan Chait, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, January 10, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Anna B. Sturm, 94
Active Member At Redeemer Lutheran Church
Anna B. Sturm, 94, of Somerset died on Thursday, December 17, 1999 at Willow Creek Care Center in Somerset.
Born in Brooklyn, she had lived in Menlo Park and in Westfield at the Westfield Senior Citizen Housing.
Mrs. Sturm was a member of the Westfield Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield.
She was a lifelong member of the Granite Chapter, now Mizpah’s Star, Chapter No. 410, of the Eastern Star.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank J. Sturm, in 1973.
Surviving are her brother, Paul Henry Klett of Scottsdale, Arizona; her sister, Barbara Menzel of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania, and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, January 30, at 12:30 p.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Gray Memorial Funeral Home, 12 Springfield Avenue, Cranford.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Redeemer Lutheran Church, Cowperthwaite and Clark Streets, Westfield, 07090, in care of the Reverend Paul Kritsch.

Bernice Davis, 68
Former School Chief; Lauded for Saving Orange Schools
Bernice J. Davis, 68, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, July 19, 1999 at Elizabeth General Medical Center in Elizabeth.
Born in Cranford in 1930, she was raised in Elizabeth and moved to Linden in 1962. She relocated to Scotch Plains in 1989.
Mrs. Davis was a consultant for the state Department of Education, following a decades-long career as a teacher and administrator within the Elizabeth, Orange and Linden school districts. During the 1970s, she served on the Linden Board of Education.
A 1948 alumna of the former Battin High School in Elizabeth, she graduated in 1952 from the former Newark State Teacher’s College.
Mrs. Davis, who began her education career as a teacher at Lafayette Elementary School No. 6 in Elizabeth, became Principal of the city’s Winfield Scott School No. 2 in 1965. She earned a graduate degree in education from Seton Hall University in South Orange.
Mrs. Davis’s tenure with the Elizabeth school system included having been Director of Elementary Instruction and Curriculum, administrative assistant to the superintendent, and assistant superintendent.
In 1991, school district officials appointed Mrs. Davis as Deputy Superintendent, a position they created for her to honor her contributions to education.
A year later, she took over as Superintendent of the Orange school system. She was credited with rehabilitating the district, then on the verge of being taken over by the state, through a successful campaign which involved upgrading facilities and curriculum.
The system regained full certification from the state Board of Education just three years later.
Mrs. Davis retired from the Orange school district in 1995.
Surviving are a son, James Davis, 2nd of Atlanta; a daughter, Deidre Davis of Washington, D.C.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 22, at St. Elizabeth Church in Elizabeth.
Interment followed at Rosehill Cemetery in Linden.
Arrangements were handled by the Nesbitt Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bernice J. Davis Scholarship Fund, care of Deidre A. Davis, 30 Hardwick Court, Scotch Plains, 07076.

William B. Barnes, 86
Shipping Manager At Rheem Manufacturing; Army Veteran
William B. Barnes, 86, of Westfield died on Thursday, July 22, 1999 at home.
Born in Washington, D.C., he had lived in Westfield for many years.
Mr. Barnes was a shipping manager for Rheem Manufacturing in Linden for many years before retiring.
Previously, he had owned his own trucking company in Virginia.
He was a member of the senior handyman service of Union County. He was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels.
He helped organize the AARP Chapter of Westfield in the 1980s.
He was also a member of the Union County R.S.V.P. and the Westfield Veteran of Foreign Wars and received an award for being post chairman involved in the Voice of Democracy.
He was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Elsie Barnes, in 1996.
Surviving are two sons, Robert Barnes and William Barnes and a sister, Muriel Norris.
Funeral services were held on Monday, July 26, at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.
Interment was private.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation or the Alzheimers Association.

Dorothy Gonzales, 90
Dorothy Darton Gonzales, 90, a former New Jersey resident, died on Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at the Family Life Enrichment Center Community in High Shoals, GA.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank T. Heazle.
She graduated from Braintree, MA High School in 1925, and attended the New England Conservatory of Music.
Prior to moving to Georgia in 1982, Mrs. Gonzales had lived in Westfield, Pennsylvania and Florida, where she was an active member of several Episcopal churches.
From 1992 through 1997, she resided in Lanier Gardens in Athens, Georgia.
She later moved to the Family Life Enrichment Center Community.
She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years, Rodolfo S. Gonzales, in 1992.
Surviving is a son, Serge Gonzales of Athens.
A memorial gathering was held on Tuesday, July 27, at the Lord and Stephens Funeral Home, East, in Athens.
Burial took place in the Harmony Grove Cemetery in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
Memorial donations may be made to Lanier Gardens, 801 Riverhill Drive, Athens, GA 30606.

Elva Bunting, 86
Elva Bunting, 86, of Green Brook died on Monday, July 19, 1999 at Greenbrook Manor Nursing Home in Green Brook.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Manhattan for the majority of her life.
She had lived in Westfield for four years and in Dumont for the last three years.
Ms. Bunting was employed by McKesson Corporation in Manhattan for 10 years, before retiring several years ago.
She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in North Plainfield.
She was predeceased by her twin sister, Edna Johnson, in 1981.
Surviving are four brothers, George Gustavson of Hancock, New Hampshire, Paul Gustavson of Creskill, Bruno Gustavson of Orangeburg, NY and Eric Gustavson of New York City.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 22, at Higgins Home for Funerals in North Plainfield.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 9 Mercer Avenue, North Plainfield, 07060.

Mildred H. MacMillan, 87
Was Teller At National Newark and Essex Bank
Mildred H. MacMillan, 87, of Westfield died on Saturday, July 24, 1999 at Conway Hospital in Conway, South Carolina.
Born in New York City, she lived in Caldwell for 43 years and lived in Westfield for the last six years.
Ms. MacMillan was a teller at National Newark and Essex Bank in Newark for many years, before retiring in 1978.
Surviving are two sons, Gary Gadek of Westfield and Fred Gadek of West Caldwell; a daughter, Janet Waterman of Myrtle Beach, SC; a sister, Ruth Jelinek of Pendelton, SC; a brother, Ellsworth Martin of Succasunna; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Liturgy will be offered today, Thursday, July 29, at 11 a.m. at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment will be held in Restland Memorial Park in East Hanover.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue, Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to Sister Pat’s Camp for Children with Cancer, St. Helen’s Church, c/o Marilyn Ryan, 1600 Rahway Avenue, Westfield, 07090.
