William J. Hassett, 74
Navy Veteran; Boilermaker With Union Local No. 5
William J. Hassett, 74, of Fanwood died on Friday, July 23, 1999 at home.
Born in Bayonne, he was a longtime resident of Fanwood.
Mr. Hassett was a boilermaker with the Boilermakers Union Local No. 5 in New York City before retiring.
He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 209 and the Veteran of Foreign Wars Post No. 10122 in Scotch Plains.
He had served in the US Navy during World War II.
He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen Hassett.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas Hassett, Daryl Hassett and Buddy Hassett; five sisters, Sissy Cox, Kathy Haley, Marilyn Love, Peggy Sinoppoli and Gerry Wendell; one brother, Robert Hassett and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, July 25, at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
Memorial donations may be made to Deborah Hospital.
John F. Waters, 75
Navy Veteran; Second District Organizer of Unions
John F. Waters, 75, of Nutley died on Friday, July 23, 1999 in the Hackensack University Medical Center.
Born in Newark, he lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Nutley 35 years ago.
Mr. Waters was the second district organizer for the International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades for the East Coast and worked for more than 20 years before retiring 15 years ago.
He was a member and named Knight of the Year in 1997 for St. Mary’s Council of the Knights of Columbus in Nutley.
He was also a former member of the church’s parish council and a volunteer at the Hackensack University Medical Center.
He had served in the Navy during World War II.
Surviving is a daughter, Karen Waters.
A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, July 27, in St. Mary’s Church in Nutley.
Arrangements were handled by the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home in Nutley.
Martha Aber, 94
Was Assistant Manager At Howard Savings Bank for 35 Years
Martha R. Aber, 94, of Toms River died on Tuesday, July 20, 1999 at the Community Medical Center in Toms River.
Born in Long Island, she had resided in Scotch Plains before moving to Toms River in 1967.
Mrs. Aber had been an assistant manager for 35 years at the Howard Savings Bank in South Orange before retiring in 1965.
She was a member of the Scotchwood Women’s Auxiliary and was Past President and a member of the Women’s Club of Holiday City in Silverton.
Mrs. Aber was also a past matron of Atlas Chapter No. 99 Order of the Eastern Star in Westfield.
She was predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Aber.
Private services were handled by the Silverton Memorial Funeral Home in Toms River.
David M. Mumford, 75
Army Veteran; Owner of Mumford Dental Ceramics
David M. Mumford, 75, of Scotch Plains died on Monday, July 26, 1999 at Rahway Hospital in Rahway.
Born in Westfield, he lived there before moving to Scotch Plains 45 years ago. He also maintained a residence in Loveladies, Long Beach Island.
Mr. Mumford owned Mumford Dental Ceramics in Scotch Plains, before retiring.
He was a member of the First United Church in Westfield, Atlas Pythagoras Lodge No. 10 Free and Accepted Masons in Westfield, Atlas Chapter No. 99 Order of the Eastern Star in Westfield, the Crescent Temple Ancient Order of the Noble and Mystic Shrine in Trenton and the New Jersey Lapidary’s Society.
He was an Army veteran of World War II when he received four Bronze Stars for his service in Europe including the Battle of Normandy.
He was a graduate of the Dental Ceramics School in New York.
Surviving are his wife, Leola Thomas Mumford; a son, Mitch Mumford of Scotch Plains; a daughter, Judy M. Leslie of Lansdale, PA; two brothers, James Mumford, Jr. of Springhouse, PA and William Mumford of Woodcliff Lake and five grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, July 29, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 3551 North Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA 19140.
Ruth Bliwise
Active in Westfield Groups; Charter Member of Holocaust Museum
Ruth Bliwise of Mountainside died on Friday, November 5, 1999 in the Manor Health Care Facility in Mountainside.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Elizabeth before moving to Mountainside 45 years ago.
Mrs. Bliwise had worked as a teacher with the Newark Board of Education until 1955.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from New Jersey State Teachers College in Newark.
She was a member of the Hadassah and B’nai B’rith, both of Westfield, and a charter member of the Holocaust Museum of Washington, D.C.
Surviving are her husband, Daniel Bliwise; a son, Dr. Donald Bliwise; a brother, Dr. William Offenkrantz, and a grandchild.
Services were held on Monday, November 8, in Temple Emanu-El in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Barbara Gordon
Barbara Gordon of Mountainside died on Thursday, November 4, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Connecticut and New York City before moving to Mountainside 25 years ago.
Mrs. Gordon was a member of Hadassah and the B’nai B’rith Women, both of Westfield.
She studied voice at the Juilliard School of Music and the Manhattan School of Music for many years.
Surviving is her mother, Jeanne Scher.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, November 7, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Mary Cauterucci, 74
Mary Josephine Anne Cauterucci, 74, of Toms River died on Friday, November 5, 1999 at home.
Born in North Arlington, she had lived in Westfield for 37 years before moving to Toms River.
Mrs. Cauterucci was a graduate of Trinity College in Washington, D.C.
Surviving are her husband of 50 years, Vincent J. Cauterucci; seven sons, James Cauterucci, Frank Cauterucci, Peter Cauterucci, Richard Cauterucci, Vincent Cauterucci, Michael Cauterucci and John Cauterucci; four daughters, Annamarie McCarthy, Judith Prior, Delores Talvy and Mary Godfrey; a brother, Aldo Del Turco; a sister, Irene Morrison and 14 grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was offered on Monday, November 8, in St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church in Toms River.
Arrangements were handled by the Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home in Toms River.
James Williamson, Sr., 76
Army Veteran; Was Retired From Harris Structural Steel
James Williamson, Sr., 76, of Union died on Thursday, November 4, 1999 at Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark.
Born in Johnsonville, S.C., he had lived in Plainfield and Fanwood before moving to Union 18 years ago.
Mr. Williamson had worked for the Harris Structural Steel Corporation in South Plainfield before retiring.
He was a veteran of the United States Army and served during World War II.
He was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Westfield.
Surviving are two sons, Rochelle Williamson of Plainfield and James Williamson, Jr. of Piscataway; a daughter, Annie Williams of Plainfield; two stepdaughters, Pamela Butterfield and Doris Stephens; nine sisters, Juanita Graham of New York City, Yvonne McWhite and Adele Key, both of Johnsonville, S.C.; Johnnie M. Perkins of the Bronx, Mary Hayes and Naomi Williamson, both of Brooklyn; Jerona Wright and Betty Williamson, both of Piscataway and Patricia Williamson of Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; a brother, Isaac Williamson of Johnsonville; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services were held yesterday, Wednesday, November 10, at the Church of Latter Day Saints in Plainfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
