Patrick J. Duggan, Jr., 57, of Westfield died on Saturday, May 22, 1999 at home.
Born in Kearny, he had lived in Newark before moving to Westfield in 1972.
Mr. Duggan was employed with the DeVry Institute in North Brunswick from 1996 to 1998 as an Assistant Mathematics Professor.
Previously, he had been a district manager with Bell Atlantic at various locations in New Jersey for 26 years before retiring in 1995.
He was a lector at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
Mr. Duggan graduated from Newark College of Engineering with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering in 1964.
He received a master’s degree in mathematics from Seton Hall University in South Orange in 1994.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Marie Elward Duggan; his mother, Mary Gallagher Duggan of South Belmar; three sons, Patrick Duggan, 3rd, of Chatham Brian Duggan of Westfield and Sean Duggan of Manhattan; a brother, John Duggan of Spring Lake, and two grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, May 24, in St. Helen’s Church in Westfield.
Burial took place on Tuesday, May 25, at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made either to the Center for Hope Hospice, 176 Hussa Street, Linden, 07036, or to the Westfield Memorial Library.
Herman Tucker, 68
Active in Church Past Master of Mt. Horeb Lodge No. 9
Herman Tucker, 68, of Fanwood died on Monday, May 17, 1999 in Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Alberta, Virginia on January 10, 1931, he was the son of the late Lem and Mattie Tucker.
He had lived in Westfield and Newark before moving to Fanwood in 1976.
Mr. Tucker had been employed by A&N; Landscaping in Westfield before retiring.
He was previously employed by the Hyatt Roller Bearing Division of General Motors in Clark for more than 32 years.
After moving to New Jersey, he joined the Bethel Baptist Church in Westfield and later became a member of the Philemon Missionary Baptist Church in Newark, where he had served on the Usher Board and sang with the Male Chorus.
He was also a member and Past Master of Mt. Horeb Lodge No. 9 of Free and Accepted Masons, and a member of the Holy Temple No. 4, the Royal Arch Masons, the Hiriam Commandery No. 17, the Moohab Grand Consistory, the Knights Templar, and the Morocco Temple No. 1 A.A.O.N.O.M.S.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in 1991 by his wife, Lucille Harris, whom he married in 1955.
Surviving are two daughters, Dorothy Yancey and Yvonne Richards; two sisters, Helen Graves and Alice Proctor, and two grandchildren.
Services were held on Friday, May 21, at the Plinton-Curry Funeral Home in Westfield and at the Philemon Baptist Church.
Masonic rites and additional services were held at the church on Saturday, May 22.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Julian C. Dowell, 85
Freelance Illustrator; Spent 50 Years in the Advertising Field
Julian C. Dowell, 85, of Westfield died on Tuesday, May 18, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Silver Spring, Maryland in 1913, he grew up in Riverside, Illinois and moved to Westfield in 1951.
A graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago, Mr. Dowell later moved to New York, where he began a 50-year career in advertising.
By age 29 he was the youngest senior art director in New York, working for Sherman Marquette Advertising.
In 1985, after working for numerous firms, he left Doyle Dane Birnbach but continued to draw storyboards as a freelance illustrator for 10 more years before retiring five years ago.
Surviving are his wife, Lucinda Huff Dowell; three sons, William Dowell, Jonathan Dowell and Jeremy Dowell; two daughters, Christina Fleur and Sabina Wendell, and four grandsons.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 13, at 1 p.m. in the First Congregational Church in Westfield.
Arrangements are being handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Multiple Sclerosis National Society.
Mary Colapietro, 70
Mary Colapietro, 70, of Garwood died on Friday, May 21, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Plainfield, she had lived in Westfield and Garwood for many years.
Miss Colapietro had worked for 40 years in various positions at Woolworth’s in New York and New Jersey before retiring 14 years ago.
Surviving are her brother, Thomas Colapietro, and two sisters, Christine Materia and Madeline Ayres.
A Mass was offered on Tuesday, May 25, in St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church in Garwood.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Ruth F. Mariano, 76
Ruth F. Mariano, 76, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, May 19, 1999 at home.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Plainfield before moving to Fanwood 30 years ago.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Mariano; a son, Thomas J. Mariano of Whitehouse Station; a brother, Joseph Giordano of Sun City, Florida, and three grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 22, at the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Alfred Lovell, Sr., 67
Navy Veteran; Chemist at Merck & Co. in Rahway
Alfred Vincent Lovell, Sr., 67, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, May 18, 1999 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Staten Island, he had lived in Brooklyn and in Roselle before moving to Scotch Plains 25 years ago.
Mr. Lovell had been a chemist at Merck & Company in Rahway for more than 30 years before retiring 10 years ago.
He was a member of the Independent Order of Foresters and the New Jersey Football Officials Association.
He served in the United States Navy during peacetime and in the Navy Reserve during the Korean Conflict.
Mr. Lovell earned a bachelor’s degree in science from Brooklyn College.
Surviving are his wife, Sylvia Lovell; two sons, Alfred Lovell, Jr. and Gerard Lovell; a brother, John Lovell; a sister, Linda Mull, and a grandchild.
A Funeral Mass was held on Monday, May 24, in St. John Baptist Church in Scotch Plains.
Peter von Nessi, 81
Awarded Bronze Star; Owned Newark Firm for Over 40 Years
Peter von Nessi, 81, of Mountainside died on Saturday, May 22, 1999 in the Manor Care Nursing Center in Mountainside.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Roselle Park before moving to Mountainside in 1954.
Mr. von Nessi had owned Central Warehouse and Transportation in Newark for more than 40 years before retiring as President in 1981.
He served in the United States Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
Mr. von Nessi received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Rutgers University in 1947.
Surviving are two sons, Peter P. von Nessi, Jr. and Gregory von Nessi, Sr.; a daughter, Karen Vega; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered yesterday, Wednesday, May 26, in Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside, following the funeral from the McCracken Funeral Home in Union.
Patrick Del Negro, 70
Local Parishioner; Retired Clerk With Lucent Technologies
Patrick Del Negro, 70, a lifelong resident of Scotch Plains, died on Friday, May 21, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Mr. Del Negro had been a clerk for Lucent Technologies in Piscataway for many years before retiring in 1990.
He was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Surviving are a brother, Joseph Del Negro of West Creek, and two sisters, Mary DiQuollo and Edith Rapoano, both of Scotch Plains.
Funeral services were held on Monday, May 24, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in Watchung, followed by a Mass at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Entombment was held at the Good Shepherd Mausoleum in Colonia.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Scotch Plains Rescue Squad.
