Mrs. Fries, 78, of Matawan died Jan. 25 at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel. Born in Glen Rock, she resided in Matawan the past 50 years. Mrs. Fries was a seamstress and the founder of the home-based business Taylor Made Boat Curtains. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, J. Donald Fries, in 2002; and a brother, William. She is survived by four daughters and three sons-in-law, Daren and Jim Hutchinson of Rumson, Patti Fries and Eric Sandor of Tarboro, N.C., Carol and Frank Dugan of Manasquan, and Nancy Dowd of Island Heights; a son, Donald A. Dorothy Brownell Lorenzo Johnsen
Mrs. Johnsen, 68, of Shrewsbury, died Jan. 25 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Red Bank, she resided in Shrewsbury the past 25 years. She was a self-employed freelance artist, donating several of her pieces to local charities. She was a member of St. George’s-by-the-River Episcopal Church, Rumson. She was one of the original founders of Second Hand Rose at Monmouth Day Care Center, Red Bank. She enjoyed time with her family, and playing the piano. She was predeceased by her father, Michael Lorenzo; and a daughter, Susan Johnsen in 1995. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Frederick C. Johnsen of Shrewsbury; her son and daughter-in-law, Wayne Scott and Meredith Johnsen of Oceanport; her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and John Naiman of Little Silver; her mother, Elenora "Brownie" Carman of Fair Haven; and five grandchildren. A funeral service was at St. George’s-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, Rumson. Interment

Catharine "Kay" J. Jacques
Mrs. Jacques, 92, of Shrewsbury died Jan. 25 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. She resided in Jersey City and Spring Lake Heights before moving to Shrewsbury. Mrs. Jacques was a homemaker. Prior to that, she had a brief career as a businesswoman in New York City. She enjoyed time with her family, and volunteering for the St. Peter’s College Alumni Association, Jersey City. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Fred Jacques; two daughters, Suzanne Gavin of Rumson and Calley Ekins of Batesville, Ind.; a son, Fred Jacques Jr. of Jersey City; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. William T. Schmitt Sr.
Mr. Schmitt Sr., 71, of Red Bank died Jan. 10 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Pittsburgh, he resided there prior to moving to Red Bank. Mr. Schmitt worked in the supermarket industry for 43 years prior to his retirement. He served with the U.S. Army during peacetime. He was a volunteer with the Independent Engine Fire Company, Red Bank, and a member of the Knights of Columbus and American Legion, both Red Bank. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Frances Trunzo Schmitt; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Cheryl Schmitt Jr. of Eatontown, and Joseph and Christine Schmitt of Ocean; two daughters and one son-in-law, Mary Frances and Russell Giovine of West Orange, and Cindy Schmitt of Red Bank; two brothers, Leo Schmitt and Earl Schmitt, of Pittsburgh; two sisters, Rosemary Bauer of Pittsburgh and Ruth Watkins of Virginia; and eight grandchildren. Mary A. Pede
Mrs. Pede, 89, of Little Silver, died April 15 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Newark, she resided in Jersey City prior to moving to Little Silver in 1968. She was a retired receptionist at Riverview Medical Center, where she was employed more than 25 years. She was a communicant of St. James Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. She enjoyed time with her family, dancing, and big band music. She was predeceased by her husband, Harold Pede in 1966. She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Pat Leonard and Dominick Abbatiello of Princeton, April and Joseph Prinzo of Hazlet, and Colleen McCloskey and William Novak of Great Falls, Va.; two brothers and one sister-in-law, William and Lorraine Preston of Keansburg, and James Preston of Middletown; a sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Al Bennett of Middletown; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Denise P. Hance
Mrs. Hance, 43, of Baton Rouge, La., died May 7 at Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center, Baton Rouge, following a battle with breast cancer and leukemia. Born in New York City, she resided in Staten Island, N.Y., and Middletown for 20 years, before moving to Baton Rouge 12 years ago. Mrs. Hance was a homemaker. She is survived by her husband of 15 years, John R. Hance; two daughters, Gabriella and Alexandra Hance of Baton Rouge; a son, Paul Hance of Baton Rouge; her parents, Sybil and Ray Fiegel of Tinton Falls; a sister and brother-in-law, Doreen and Ed Husar of Tinton Falls; a brother, Daniel Fiegel of New York City; and three nieces. Charles R. Layton
Mr. Layton, 73, of Highlands, died May 28 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. He was a long-time resident of Rumson. He was a retired self-employed plumber at Taylor and Layton Plumbing, Sea Bright. He served with the U.S. Navy, and was an active member of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He is survived by his wife, Edna Rogers Layton; a son, Charles “Buddy” Layton of Florida; a brother, Reginald C. Layton of Sea Bright; and several grandchildren. A funeral service and interment was at Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arnytown. Arrangements were by John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank.

Ms. Scala, 81, of Red Bank, died May 24 in Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she had resided in Vineland and Woodbridge before moving to Red Bank two years ago. Ms. Scala was a homemaker. She was predeceased by there brothers, Joseph, Edward and Dominick Scala; and a sister, Anna Scala. David F. Meshowski
Mr. Meshowski, 52, of East Windsor, died March 5 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, Hamilton. Born in Bayonne, he resided in East Brunswick for several years, prior to moving to East Windsor 13 years ago. He was a program administrator at the State of New Jersey, Department of Prevention of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Trenton. He is survived by a daughter, Katherine of South Plainfield; his parents, Frank and Olga Skirka Meshowski of Monroe Township; and two sisters and one brother-in-law, Laurie Lang of East Brunswick, and Elaine and Anthony Melone of Oceanport. Robin Greenley Fleury
Ms. Fleury, 33, of Keyport, died March 25 at home. Born in Belleville, she resided in the Belford section of Middletown and in Middletown Township before moving to Keyport one year ago. Ms. Fleury was a graduate of Middletown High School South. She is survived by her parents, Robert and Jane Picariello Greenley of Toms River; three sisters, Leslie Theyn of Long Branch, Renee Greenley of Red Bank and Lisa Christo of Indiana; her grandmother, Virginia Greenley of New Jersey; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Anne Matuch
Mrs. Matuch, 83, of Tinton Falls, died March 26 at home. Born in Neffs, Ohio, she moved to Long Branch in 1979 and then to Tinton Falls in 2004. Mrs. Matuch was a salesperson working in retail before her retirement. She was a communicant of Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was a volunteer at Ronald McDonald House and Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, and a member of the Leadership Corps at Monmouth Medical Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Walter F. Matuch, in 1999; and two brothers, Michael Kornutick, in 2002, and Joseph Kornutick, in 1980. Mrs. Matuch is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Walter M. and Marysusan Matuch of Bloomsbury; a daughter, Marilyn L. William J. Holle
Mr. Holle, 79, of the New Monmouth section of Middletown, died March 25 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Elizabeth, he resided in New Monmouth the past 49 years. He was a supervisor at Squibb Pharmaceutical, New Brunswick, for 15 years, retiring in 1987. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a member of the Reformed Church of Tinton Falls. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Lois Lapp Holle; a daughter and son-in-law, Gayle and Boris Semliatschenko of Fair Haven; a son and daughter-in-law, William and Joan Holle of Shrewsbury; and five grandchildren.
