David C. Payne, 82
David C. Payne, 82, of Mountainside died on Friday, June 18, 1999 at Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Lawrence, Long Island, he grew up in Cedar Hurst, Long Island and also lived in Westfield before moving to Mountainside many years ago.
He attended Hofstra University in Hempstead, New York for two years before entering the United States Army Air Corps.
Mr. Payne served in the 8th Army in England and France during World War II, and was discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield, and of the Old Guard of Westfield.
He was predeceased by a son, Mark Alexander Payne, who died in 1949.
Surviving are his wife of 52 years, Shirley M. Payne; a daughter, Cynthia Payne Howell of Fanwood; a son, David Bradford Payne of Fort Myers, Florida, and two grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 22, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield. Burial was private.
Donations may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Mountainside Rescue Squad.
Raymond J. Holt, 88
Raymond J. Holt, 88, of Westfield died on Friday, June 18, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Bayonne, he most recently lived in Westfield.
Mr. Holt had been employed in sales for Hostess Bakery in Paterson for 30 years before his retirement in 1975.
He served in the United States Navy during World War II, assigned in the Pacific at Pearl Harbor and Midway.
Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Althedel Holt; a daughter, Janis Richards of Westfield, and two grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on Monday, June 21, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Kathleen D. Sutton, 53
Was Teacher In Woodbridge and Green Brook
Kathleen “Kathy” D. Hiross Sutton, 53, died on Saturday, June 19, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Westfield, she had lived in Middlesex before moving to Green Brook in 1975.
Mrs. Sutton was an English teacher from 1968 to 1975 at Woodbridge Junior High School and was a substitute teacher in the mid-1980s in the Green Brook school system.
She graduated from Holy Trinity High School in Westfield and from Bloomfield College in Bloomfield.
Surviving are her husband, Ronald D. Sutton; two sons, Ronald D. Sutton, Jr. and Thomas W. Sutton, both of Green Brook; a daughter, Heather Ann Blood of Wildwood, Illinois; a brother, Thomas Hiross of Omaha, Nebraska, and two sisters, Patty Abdy of Franklin Lakes and Marylyn DeCuello of Readington.
A Funeral Mass was held yesterday, Wednesday, June 23, at St. John’s Roman Catholic Church in Dunellen.
Arrangements were handled by the Higgins Home For Funerals in Watchung.

Elizabeth Smith, 34
Pingry Graduate; Worked With Exchange Student Groups
Elizabeth “Lisa” Allan Smith, 34, of Annapolis, Maryland died on Friday, June 18, 1999 in the Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Mountainside before moving to Annapolis in 1992.
Mrs. Smith had worked with the American Field Service, an international exchange student organization in New York, and in the Maryland State House.
She also hosted a foreign exchange student from Brazil in 1994 and another from Norway in 1997 with her husband, Andrew Paul Smith.
She had graduated from the Pingry School in Martinsville, where she was named a scholar-athlete.
She was a 1987 graduate of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina where she graduated with a double degree in political science and psychology.
Surviving, in addition to her husband, are a son, Henry Winfield Smith; a daughter, Hannah Katherine Smith; her parents, Connie and David Allan of Mountainside, and three brothers, David Allan of Pennsylvania, Robert Allan of Honeoye Falls, New York, and Christopher Allan of Boulder, Colorado.
A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 26, at 6 p.m. at the John M. Taylor Funeral Home, 147 Glouscester Street, Anapolis, Maryland. Visitation will be held at 5 p.m.
Isabella B. Thiesing, 101
Oldest Member Of Redeemer Lutheran Church, Westfield
Isabella B. Thiesing, 101, of Fanwood died on Saturday, June 19, 1999 at the Arnold Walter Nursing Home in Holmdel.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Irvington before moving to Fanwood in 1952.
Mrs. Thiesing was the oldest living member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Westfield, where she was a volunteer until the age of 90.
She was also President of the Ladies Aid Guild, assisting the Pastor with nursing home services and in other capacities.
She was predeceased by her husband, Henry R. Thiesing, in 1976.
Surviving are three sons, H. Richard Thiesing of Middletown, Robert E. Thiesing of Fanwood, and John E. Thiesing of Rockford, Illinois; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held today, Thursday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at the Redeemer Lutheran Church.
Interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.

Joseph Cummo, 81
Joseph S. Cummo, 81, of Scotch Plains died on Saturday, June 19, 1999 in Genesis ElderCare Center in Westfield.
Born in Staten Island, he had lived in Barefoot Bay, Florida before moving to Scotch Plains three years ago.
Mr. Cummo was a supervisor for 25 years at the New York City Sanitation Department before retiring 21 years ago.
He was a United States Army veteran of World War II.
Surviving are his wife, Teresa Cummo; two sons, Richard Cummo and Robert Cummo; a daughter, Joy Ann Garvin; a brother, Mario Cummo, and 10 grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, June 22, in St. John Vianney’s Church in Colonia.
Arrangements were handled by the Gosselin Funeral Home in Edison.
James C. Farrell, 65
Golf Instructor; Taught Game to Three Presidents
James C. “Jimmy” Farrell, 65, of Boynton Beach, Florida, a golf professional and instructor who gave lessons to President Dwight D. Eisenhower and two of the President’s successors, died on Wednesday, June 9, 1999 in Bethesda Memorial Hospital in Boynton Beach.
Born in Hollywood Florida, he was the second of five children of golf champion Johnny Farrell and his wife, Kay, herself an amateur golfer.
Mr. Farrell’s father won the United States Open in 1928 and was inducted into the Professional Golf Association Golf Hall of Fame.
As a youth, Mr. Farrell divided his time between Florida and New Jersey, attending schools in both states.
While in New Jersey, he attended St. Benedict’s Preparatory School in Newark and Holy Trinity High School in Westfield.
Mr. Farrell lived in Westfield between 1934 and 1959.
While in the United States Army, he served as a golf professional at Fort Dix.
He later accompanied his mother to Iceland, where he helped establish the first military practice and driving range facility.
Mr. Farrell had worked as a golf professional at the Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, where he gave lessons to then-Vice President Richard M. Nixon.
He gave golf lessons to President Eisenhower at the Newport Country Club in Newport, Rhode Island, where he and his father also played foursomes with the President. He also taught the game to then-Senator John F. Kennedy at the club.
Mr. Farrell additionally served as Head Golf Professional at the Warrenbrook Country Club in Warren Township before he relocated to Florida in 1970. He subsequently worked as a golf professional at the Delray Beach Country Club there.
Surviving are three sons, James Farrell of Charlotte, North Carolina, Michael Farrell of Delray Beach, Florida and David Farrell of Charleston, South Carolina; two brothers, Billy Farrell of Greenwich, Connecticut and Johnny Farrell of New York; two sisters, Catherine Rock of Westfield and Peggy McGuire of Florida, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service was held yesterday, Wednesday, June 23, at St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Boynton Memorial Chapel in Boynton Beach.

Myra Hornby, 95
Patent Attorney Secretary; Past President of Fanwood Woman’s Club
Myra L. Hornby, 95, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at the home of her son, Robert Hornby, in the Sergeantsville section of Delaware Township, where she lived part of the time.
Born in New Brunswick on October 21, 1903, the daughter of the late George A. and Mary Meagher Hogan, she had lived in Fanwood from 1936 to 1965, when she moved to Scotch Plains.
Mrs. Hornby had been a patent attorney secretary at Bell Labs in Murray Hill.
She was a former member and Past President of the Fanwood Woman’s Club, and a member of the Scotch Plains Woman’s Club from 1970 to 1980.
She was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, Cecil R. Hornby, in 1952.
In addition to her son, Mrs. Hornby is survived by three grandchildren, all of Delaware Township.
A Funeral Liturgy will be held today, Thursday, June 24, at 9:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
Interment will take place at St. Peter’s Cemetery in New Brunswick.
Arrangements were handled by the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home in Flemington.
