Ruth J. Packer, 87
Ruth J. Packer, 87, died on Sunday, March 26, 2000 in the Quarryville Presbyterian Home in Quarryville, Pa.
Born in Englewood on April 29, 1912, she had lived in Westfield for 36 years and then in Whiting for three years before returning to Westfield.
She relocated to Quarryville nine years ago.
Mrs. Packer had been employed by the Springfield Board of Education as a teacher of Spanish and Social Studies and then as a librarian at the Florence M. Gaudineer Middle School in Springfield before retiring in June of 1970.
She was awarded her bachelor’s degree from Montclair State Teachers College, now Montclair University, in Upper Montclair.
Mrs. Packer received her Master of Library Science Degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick.
She was a longtime member of the Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church in Westfield and the Faith Reformed Presbyterian Church in Quarryville.
She was predeceased by her parents, William and Sophie Johnson, and by her husband, Robert E. Packer.
Surviving are two daughters, Barbara Ottoson of Westfield and Ruth Margaret Noll of Wheaton, Ill., and six grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at the Grace Orthodox Presbyterian Church on Saturday, April 1, at 10 a.m.
Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Ivan B. DeWald Funeral Home in Quarryville.
MaryRose Otto, 71
MaryRose Otto, 71, of Neshanic Station in Branchburg Township, died on Monday, March 20, 2000 at the Pocono Medical Center in East Stroudsburg, Pa.
Born in Scotch Plains, she had lived in Raritan before moving to Neshanic Station in 1957.
She resided at the Maple Run Manor personal care home in Salorburg, Pa. for the past two years.
She lived in Neshanic Station since 1957, formerly of Raritan.
Mrs. Otto, a homemaker, had worked briefly for Diehl Singer Company in Bridgewater.
Surviving are her husband of 42 years, Adolph J. “Eddie” Otto; a son, Edward A. Otto of Neshanic Station; a daughter, Maryann B. Sefcik of Tobyhanna, Pa., and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, March 24, at the Hannon Bros. Funeral Home in Raritan.
Interment took place at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Bridgewater.
Rosalyn Webb, 72
Rosalyn Hooper Webb, 72, of Somerville died on Monday, March 20, 2000 at the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in Boston on October 14, 1927, she had resided in Newton, Mass., in Hamden, Conn. and in Westfield from 1968 to 1982 before relocating to Somerville.
Ms. Webb attended Rogers Hall Academy in Massachusetts and Gould Academy in Maine.
Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl W. DeSantis of Fair Haven and Candace W. Conover of Bridgewater; a brother, Dr. Charles F. Hooper, Jr. of Gainesville, Fla.; four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters.
A private funeral service was held on Wednesday, March 22, at Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for breast cancer research or to the American Cancer Society.
William J. Rabbitt, 80
Exxon Retiree; Decorated Veteran of World War II
William J. Rabbitt, 80, of Westfield died on Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at home.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived there for many years before moving to Elizabeth in 1950. He relocated to Westfield in 1983.
Mr. Rabbitt had been employed as a rigger for Exxon in Linden from 1946 until his retirement in 1981.
He had worked as a ship fitter supervisor from 1940 to 1944 with the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Company in Kearney.
He served in the United States Navy in the Pacific and in Okinawa during World War II.
Stationed aboard The Crescent City, he was a Machinist Mate Third Class.
He received the Asiatic Pacific Medal, the American Medal and the Victory Medal.
Mr. Rabbitt was a parishioner and Holy Name Society member of the Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church in Jersey City and also of Saint Catherine’s Roman Catholic Church in Hillside.
He was also a member of St. Helen’s Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
He was a member of the Benedictine Academy Fathers Club in Elizabeth and the Exxon Retirees Club in Linden.
Mr. Rabbitt graduated from Sacred Heart Grammar School and Snyder High School in Jersey City.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Elaine Maria Rabbitt, and a sister, Mary Jane Rabbitt.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Marion Kieslor Rabbitt, and a daughter, Sharon E. Rabbitt of Westfield.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow, Friday, March 31, at St. Helen’s Church.
Interment will be at the Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Thursday, March 30, and also tomorrow from 9:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to the Westfield Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Laurence Meier, 57
Security Director; Was in National Guard and Scouting
Laurence Henry Meier, 57, of North Plainfield died on Monday, March 27, 2000 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Jersey City, he had lived in Maplewood before moving to North Plainfield 31 years ago.
Mr. Meier was employed as Director of Security at Degussa Huls, a precious metal company in South Plainfield, for the past 15 years.
Previously, he had worked in security at Metpath in Teterboro and Penick in Newark.
He served as a Captain in the National Guard. He was a communicant of St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church in North Plainfield.
Mr. Meier was a member of the International Precious Metal Institute; the Two Hundred Club of Middlesex County; the American Society for Industrial Security and the Appalachian Trail Conference.
He was formerly a Boy Scout leader for Troop No. 107 in North Plainfield for 20 years.
Surviving are his wife, Loretta Radler Meier; his son, Major Scott Meier of Fayetteville, N. C.; a daughter, Sheryl Marco of Morgantown, W. Va.; his mother, Stella Meier of Westfield; two brothers, Arthur Meier of Landing and Gregory Meier of Westfield, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. today, Thursday, March 30, at the Higgins Home for Funerals in North Plainfield, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church.
Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

George C. Muse, 42
George C. Muse, 42, a lifelong resident of Plainfield, died on Monday, March 20, 2000 at home.
Mr. Muse was employed as a maintenance mechanic for Amerker-Porterfield in Plainfield for 20 years.
Surviving are his mother, Catherine Muse of Plainfield; his father, Roosevelt Muse of Elizabeth; four brothers, David Muse of Elizabeth, William Muse and Gary Muse, both of Plainfield, and James Muse of Richmond, Va., and his paternal grandmother, Winnie Muse of Westfield.
Services were held on Friday, March 24, at the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.
Regina Ulbrich, 75
Was Parishioner, Rosarian at Holy Trinity Church
Regina Ulbrich, 75, of Stuart, Fla., died on Saturday, March 25, 2000 at Martin Memorial Medical Center in Stuart.
Born in Johnsonburg, Pa., she had lived in Westfield before moving to Stuart 16 years ago.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Stuart and had also been a parishioner and Rosary Society member of the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Frederick Ulbrich; two daughters, Cheryl Carnwath of Annapolis, Md. and Beverly Ulbrich of San Francisco; two sons, Frederick Ulbrich of Stuart and Douglas Ulbrich of Edison; her mother, Rose Dybowski of Ridgeway, Pa. and eight grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated yesterday, Wednesday, March 29, at St. Joseph Church.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Aycock Funeral Home in Stuart.

Randall O. Zempel, 68
Former Manager With Time Warner Communications
Randall O. Zempel, 68, of Fanwood died on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at home.
Born in Rogers City, Michigan, he had lived in Fanwood for 26 years.
Mr. Zempel was a graduate of the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor where he received a bachelor’s degree and Master’s Degree of Business Administration.
He also earned a law degree from New York University.
Mr. Zempel was a Distribution Manager with Time Warner Communications in New York City for 12 years before retiring three weeks ago.
Previously, he was employed with the Singer Sewing Machine Company in New York City for 25 years.
He was an active member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Plainfield, where he served as vice-president, president and treasurer of the church.
Surviving are his wife, Janette Zempel; his daughter, Carol Zempel of New Brunswick and a sister, Sally Trafelet of Rogers City, Michigan.
Funeral services were held on June 26 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Plainfield.
Interment was held at Hillside Cemetery in Scotch Plains.
Arrangements were handled by Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
