Helen Ann Crilly, 91

Helen Ann Thompson Crilly, 91, of Lavallette died on Monday, June 21, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Elizabeth, she had lived in Scotch Plains before moving to Lavallette in 1976.
Mrs. Crilly was a homemaker.
She was a member of the Altar Rosary Society at St. Bonaventure Church in Lavallette and at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Scotch Plains.
She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America in Scotch Plains and the Third Order of St. Francis.
She was predeceased by her husband, Roger L. Crilly, in 1982 and by her son, Roger L. Crilly, Jr. in 1997.
Surviving are her son, Thomas Crilly of Silver Spring, Maryland; four daughters, Shirley Chambers of Aberdeen, Marylou Lozowski of Scotch Plains, Eileen West of Toms River and Kathryn Sinnott of Piscataway; a brother, Walter Thompson of Lavallette; 27 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Friday, June 25, at Our Lady of Fatima Roman Catholic Church in Piscataway.
Interment was held at St. Gertrude’s Cemetery in Colonia.
Arrangements were handled by the Piscataway Funeral Home.

Marion Brown, 73
Marion Brown, 73, of North Plainfield died on Sunday, June 20, 1999 in the John F. Kennedy Medical Center in Edison.
Born in Cranford, she had lived in Elizabeth for 58 years and in Scotch Plains for 10 years before moving to North Plainfield five years ago.
Mrs. Brown was a member of the National Association for the Blind.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph Brown, Jr. and Bruce L. Brown; three daughters, Beatrice C. Braxton, Darlene R. King and Sharon Brown; a sister, Gladys Roach; a brother, Walter Davis; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Friday, June 25, in the New Zion Baptist Church in Elizabeth.
Ruth Alzua, 74
Ruth Wakefield Alzua, 74, of Westfield died on Sunday, June 27, 1999 at home.
Born in Newark, she lived in Westfield for over 39 years.
Ms. Alzua was a homemaker. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College of Nursing in Boston in 1945.
Surviving are two sons, Richard C. Alzua of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and Raymond W. Alzua of Murray Hill; a daughter, Christine D. Hynes of Westfield; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A graveside funeral service was held yesterday, Wednesday, June 30, at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
Edward Allen Tice, 81
Metallurgist For International Nickel Company
Edward Allen Tice, 81, of Westfield died on Sunday, June 27, 1999 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville.
Born in St. Alban’s, West Virginia, he had lived in Cranford for 10 years before moving to Westfield 40 years ago.
Mr. Tice had worked as a metallurgist for the International Nickel Company in New York City for 20 years and later as a private consultant for 15 years.
He was a member of various chemical societies and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Westfield.
He and his wife of 58 years, Olive Tice, were recognized as Ministers at Large for their work in the church.
Mr. Tice was awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are a son, Stephen Allen Tice of Great Falls, Virginia; two daughters, Virginia Tice Stillman of Croton, New York and Laura Tice Weiner of Briarcliff Manor, New York, and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the First United Methodist Church today, Thursday, July 1, at 11 a.m.
Arrangements are being handled by the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.

Henry W. Glass, 72
Actor-Director; Active in Community Theater Groups
Henry W. Glass, 72, of Westfield died on Thursday, June 24, 1999 at Muhlenberg Regional Medical Center in Plainfield.
Born in Chester, Pennsylvania, he lived in Westfield for 43 years.
Mr. Glass established Glendoor Millwork Company, Inc., a wholesale lumber company in South Plainfield.
He acted and directed in more than 50 productions for the Westfield Community Players (WCP) and community theater groups in Scotch Plains, Linden, Livingston, Summit, Chatham, Plainfield, Woodbridge, Clark and Cranford.
He was President of the WCP in 1977 and directed shows including the recent production of Blithe Spirit.
In 1959, he was recognized by the New Jersey Theater League, receiving first prize for his direction of The Crucible at the Livingston Little Theatre.
He also garnered the Best Serious Play award in 1961 with his direction of The Lottery for the WCP.
He was the founder and first director of the New Jersey Summer Shakespeare Festival in Woodbridge.
He also served on the board of directors for the New Jersey Lyric Opera Company.
He was a member of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood Rotary Club and taught at the Westfield Adult School.
He also directed and performed benefit productions for the College Woman’s Club of Westfield, the Westfield Historical Society and local high schools.
He co-authored eight original musicals at Westfield schools, where he also volunteered his time reading to students.
He had studied theater arts at Penn State University, where he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees.
He was predeceased by his wife, Marion Wilder Glass.
Surviving are his fianceé, Kay Macrae; two sons, Stephen Glass of Charlottesville, Virginia and Gary Glass of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Bonnie Glass of Sugar Land, Texas and four grandchildren.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, June 29, at the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Entombment was held at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.

Anne Shea, 94
Former Secretary At Air Reduction Co. for 25 Years
Anne McGovern Shea, 94, of Rowayton, Connecticut died on Tuesday, June 22, 1999 at Norwalk Hospital in Norwalk, Connecticut.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Scotch Plains, Hong Kong and New York City before settling in Rowayton.
Mrs. Shea had been a secretary for Air Reduction Company of New Jersey for 25 years before retiring in 1963.
She was a communicant of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
She was predeceased by her husband, Michael Shea, in 1937.
Surviving are her daughter, Patricia Anne Hotung of Hong Kong; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Saturday, June 26, at St. Bartholomew the Apostle Church.
Arrangements were handled by the Rossi Funeral Home in Scotch Plains.
Isabelle Wilhelm, 87
Homemaker; Former Resident of Fanwood
Isabelle Wilhelm, 87, of Dover, Delaware died on Monday, June 21, 1999 at Courland Manor in Dover.
Born in Andover, Illinois in 1911, she had lived in Fanwood before moving to Dover where she resided at Courland Manor for seven years.
Mrs. Wilhelm was a homemaker. She was a member of Whatcoat United Methodist Church in Camden, Delaware and the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.
She was predeceased by her husband, Beecher E. Wilhelm, in 1974 and her parents, Albert and Ida Almquist Rodell.
Surviving is a daughter, Karen Bryson of Dover, Delaware; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, June 26, at Sharon Hills Memorial Park in Dover.
Arrangements were handled by Torbert Funeral Chapel in Dover.
George Skaff, 66
Pharmacist, Owner Of Skaff’s Pharmacy in Rahway
George B. Skaff, 66, of Bedminster died on Saturday, June 26, 1999 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick.
Born in New Brunswick, he had lived in Scotch Plains for 25 years before moving to Bedminster two years ago.
Mr. Skaff was the owner of Skaff’s Pharmacy in Rahway before retiring in 1995.
He had served on the Board of Directors of the Rahway Savings Institution and was a consultant to the Woodbridge Diagnostic Center.
He had graduated Rutgers University and the School of Pharmacy at Rutgers University.
He had served in the Army during the Korean War.
He was predeceased by his wife, Gerry Stroppa Skaff, in 1991.
Surviving are his son, Paul G. Skaff of Hillsborough; two daughters, Linda R. Fleming of Doylestown, Pennsylvania and Eileen R. Hernandez of Birmingham, Alabama; two sisters, Evelyn Skaff of Mountainside and Georgette Milan of Roanoke, Virginia and four grandchildren.
A Funeral Mass was held on Wednesday, June 30, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Roman Catholic Church in Scotch Plains.
Entombment was held at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia.
Arrangements were handled by Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue, Fanwood.
