Gertrude Conroy, 89
Gertrude “Jerry” Mattson Conroy, 89, of Boca Raton, Fla., died on Sunday, February 6, 2000 in The Quadrangle in Haverford, Pa.
Born in Jersey City, she had lived in Westfield for 27 years before moving to Florida 20 years ago.
During her residency in Florida, Mrs. Conroy helped to establish the South East Florida Alzheimers Association and was Treasurer of the Golden Harbour Yacht Club.
She was a lifetime member of the Seraphic Society.
Surviving are a daughter, Patricia C. Conn of Haverford, Pa., and two grandchildren.
A gathering of friends to celebrate her life was held on Saturday, February 12, at the home of her daughter.
Arrangements were under the direction of Stuard Funeral Directors in Ardmore, Pa.

Marion Robson, 82
Marion Doerrer Robson, 82, of Greensboro, N. C., died on Monday, February 7, 2000 at Well Spring Health Care in Greensboro.
Born on September 16, 1917 in Westfield, she was a graduate of Westfield High School.
She had lived in the Westfield-Scotch Plains area until 1978, when she relocated to Tequesta, Fla. Mrs. Robson moved to Greensboro in 1997.
She was a homemaker.
Surviving are two sons, John Robson of Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Jeff Robson of Greensboro; a brother, Charles Doerrer of Ohio, and five grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Friday, February 11, in the Well Spring Retirement Community Auditorium in Greensboro.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 2550 Highway 1, North Brunswick, 08902.

Roberta Rumpf, 79
Roberta Rumpf, 79, of Mountainside died on Monday, February 7, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in Bridgeport, Conn., Mrs. Rumpf had lived in Elizabeth and Edison before relocating to Mountainside three years ago.
Surviving are a son, Arthur Rumpf; a daughter, Barbara Macpherson, and four grandchildren.
Private services were under the direction of the Gosselin Funeral Home in Edison.

Valda Wygledowski, 71
Valda A. Wygledowski, 71, of Mountainside died on Wednesday, February 9, 2000 at home.
Born in Latvia, she came to the United States after World War II.
She had lived in South Orange and in Irvington before relocating to Mountainside several years ago.
Surviving are her husband, Stefan Wygledowski; two daughters, Sondra Wygledowski and Beatrice Quinn, and two grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, February 12, at Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church in Mountainside following the funeral from the Parkway Wozniak Memorial Home in Clark.

Rose Mark, 87
Rose Mark, 87, of Scotch Plains died on Thursday, February 10, 2000 in the Ashbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Scotch Plains.
Born in Newark, she had lived in Hillside, Irvington and Mountainside before relocating to Scotch Plains five years ago.
Mrs. Mark had worked as a bookkeeper for The Star-Ledger in Newark before retiring in 1970.
Surviving are two sons, Joseph Mark and Dennis Mark, and a sister, Gussie Armm.
Services were held on Sunday, February 13, at the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

James Summers, 68
James Summers, 68, of Scotch Plains died on Wednesday, February 9, 2000 at home.
Born in South Carolina, Mr. Summers had lived in Newark before moving to Scotch Plains 34 years ago.
Mr. Summers had been a supervisor for the American Leather Company in Rahway for many years before retiring in 1993.
He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
Surviving are a daughter, Denise Poss; three sons, Gregory C. Summers, James T. Summers and Jason B. Summers; his mother, Emily Davis, and a sister, Willie Cheatham.
Services were held on Monday, February 14, in the Rose of Sharon Community Church of Plainfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Judkins Colonial Home in Plainfield.

Mary Nemiroff, 72
Mary Nemiroff, 72, of Mountainside died on Sunday, February 6, 2000 in Overlook Hospital in Summit.
Born in New York City, she had lived in Hillside before moving to Mountainside in 1978.
Mrs. Nemiroff had been an executive secretary with Midlantic National Bank in Newark for 23 years before retiring in 1992.
She was a life member of the Union County chapter of B’nai B’rith Women.
Surviving are her husband, Joseph Nemiroff; two sons, Howard Nemiroff and Kenneth Nemiroff; two sisters, Beatrice Katz and Sondra Schuman, and four grandchildren.
Services were conducted on Tuesday, February 8, in the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.

Alexander Kitt, 78
Was Navy Veteran; Saw Action in Pacific in World War II
Alexander Kitt, 78, of Scotch Plains died on Tuesday, February 8, 2000 at home.
Born in Carteret, he lived in Scotch Plains for most of his life. He was a graduate of Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School.
Mr. Kitt had worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lyons for many years before retiring.
He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years prior to entering the United States Navy in 1942.
During World War II, he served on the USS Indiana and the USS North Carolina in the South Pacific.
Twice he was at sea during a torpedoing. Mr. Kitt was a life member of American Legion Post No. 209 and a parishioner of St. Bartholomew the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, both in Scotch Plains.
He was predeceased by two brothers, John Kitt and Michael Kitt.
Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Kitt; two brothers, George Kitt of Los Angeles and Tymko Thomas Kitt of Bedminster, and five sisters, Julia Richter of Flemington, Mary Prejean of Abbeville, La., Helen Adams of Ethel, La. and Ann Shreiber and Sophie Chaubin, both of Baton Rouge, La.
Funeral services were held on Sunday, February 13, in the Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Avenue in Fanwood.
American Legion Post No. 209 also held services on Sunday.
Interment took place at the Veterans Administration National Cemetery at Indiantown Gap in Annville, Pa.

Dorothy Smith-Lewis, 87
Social Worker; Volunteered for Red Cross Disaster Relief
Dorothy Dunn Smith-Lewis, 87, of Westfield died on Wednesday, February 9, 2000 in the Westfield Center, Genesis ElderCare Network in Westfield.
Born in Winchester, Mass. on December 20, 1912, the daughter of Edna Eastman and George Elliot Dunn, she had lived in Westfield and Maine before returning to Westfield many years ago.
Mrs. Smith-Lewis had been a social worker with the Family and Children’s Society of Plainfield for 25 years before retiring.
She specialized in family counseling and adoption services.
She also volunteered with the American Red Cross in assisting with disaster relief in Kentucky and Massachusetts.
Mrs. Smith-Lewis graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Douglass College in New Brunswick in 1934 and earned a Master of Social Work Degree from the New York School of Social Work, now an affiliate of Columbia University, in 1936.
She was predeceased by her two husbands, Sanford Clarke Smith in 1962 and Gomer Lewis in 1996.
Surviving are two sons, George Smith of Lambertsville and James Smith of Whitefield, Me.; a daughter, Dr. Nancy Naro Watts of Walkington, England; a stepdaughter, Barbara Van Meter of Bridgeton; a stepson, Richard Gary Lewis; a sister, Priscilla Lee of Westfield; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 12, in the First United Methodist Church in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fryeburg Cemetery in Fryeburg, Me.
Local arrangements were under the direction of the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
