Edwin J. Kaiser, 83
Rotary President; Was Pharmacist and Business Owner
Edwin Jacob Kaiser Jr., 83, of Freehold Township died on Thursday, August 10, 2000 at home.
Born in Newark, Mr. Kaiser had lived in Highlands and Westfield before moving to Freehold Township 20 years ago.
Mr. Kaiser had been a pharmacist and the owner of Kaiser’s Rexall Drugs in Millburn for 28 years before retiring 23 years ago.
After retiring, he had owned the Bayberry Manor in Bayville and E. Jay Eat N’ Run in Millburn for several years.
He received a bachelor’s degree from Rutgers University in Newark.
Mr. Kaiser served in the United States Army during World War II.
He was active with the Millburn Rotary Club, serving as President, and was a 55-year member. Mr. Kaiser had 31 years of perfect attendance.
Surviving are his wife, Ruth C. Kaiser; a son, Edwin J. Kaiser; a daughter, Nancy Anne Mueller; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Higgins Memorial Home in Freehold.
Janet McInerney, 84
Janet Knowlton McInerney, 84, of Westfield died on Wednesday, August 9, 2000 at home.
Born on April 22, 1916, in Seattle, Wash., the daughter of the late Frank Hooker Knowlton and Alice Freeman Knowlton, she had lived in New York and San Francisco before moving to Westfield in the 1950s.
Mrs. McInerney attended the University of Washington.
She was a lifetime member of Delta Delta Delta national sorority and belonged to the Westfield alumni group for 43 years.
She was a volunteer for the Westfield Day Care Center and at the former Little Shop, a consignment gift shop in Westfield.
She was a member of several bridge groups.
She was predeceased by her husband, Frank McInerney.
Surviving are a son, Robert McInerney of Westfield; two daughters, Patricia Kesling of Bethlehem, Pa. and Sally Higgins of Littleton, Colo.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A memorial service will be held at a time to be arranged by the family.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bannworth Funeral Home in Elizabeth.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Westfield Day Care Center Scholarship Fund, 140 Mountain Avenue, Westfield, 07090.
J. Charles Schnur, 101
Was Attorney For Warner Brothers in New York
J. Charles Schnur of Somerset, who turned 101 on July 12, died on Monday, August 7, 2000 in the Central New Jersey Jewish Home for the Aged in Somerset.
Born in Newark, he had lived in Irvington, Mountainside and Watchung before moving to Somerset more than three years ago.
Mr. Schnur had been an attorney for Warner Brothers in New York City for 45 years before retiring in 1965.
He graduated in 1924 from Rutgers Law School, which awarded him an honorary doctoral degree in 1984.
He formerly served as secretary at Temple B’Nai Israel and was the former cemetery chairperson of Achavas Achim B’Nai Israel, both in Irvington.
Surviving are two sons, David Schnur and Richard Schnur; a daughter, Joyce Pais Chambers; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held on Thursday, August 10, in Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Iselin.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Menorah Chapels at Millburn in Union.
Ellen Schoeman, 60
Ellen Susan Schoeman, 60, of Scotch Plains died on Friday, July 21, 2000 at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Hospital in New York City.
Born in Atlanta, Ga., she had lived in Yonkers, N. Y., before moving to Scotch Plains 22 years ago.
Mrs. Schoeman had been employed as an English teacher at Elizabeth High School for 12 years before retiring in 1998.
She held a Bachelor of Science Degree in Liberal Arts from the University of Georgia in Atlanta, having graduated in 1962.
Mrs. Schoeman was awarded a master’s degree in education from Kean University in Union in 1997.
Surviving are her husband, Stephen Schoeman; two daughters, Laurie Jenifer Schoeman of Brooklyn and Amy Lynne Schoeman of Scotch Plains; a sister, Sandy Epstein of Atlanta, and a brother, Jack Epstein of Columbia, Md.
The funeral took place at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield on Sunday, July 23.
Interment was at Bnai Abraham Cemetery in Union.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Higgins and Bonner Echo Lake Funeral Home in Westfield.
Lucille T. Cunicella, 78
Lucille T. Englese Cunicella, 78, of Westfield died on Wednesday, June 28, 2000 at Union Hospital in Union.
Born in Cranford, she was raised in Garwood.
She had lived in Westfield from 1947 to 1971 and from Scotch Plains from 1971 to 1983, when she returned to Westfield.
She was a homemaker. Mrs. Cunicella was a member of the Holy Trinity Rosary Society of Westfield and the Catholic War Veterans.
She was predeceased by her husband, Vito T. Cunicella.
Surviving are two sons, Robert A. Cunicella of Vermilion, Ohio and Kevin V. Cunicella of Asbury Park; a brother, Ralph Englese of Toms River; a sister, Lena Calderone of Westfield, and a grandson.
A Mass of Christian Burial was offered on Monday, July 3, in the Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield.
Interment took place at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield.
Arrangements were handled by the Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary A. Demeter
Mary A. Demeter of Westfield died on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 in the Father Hudson House Hospice in Elizabeth.
Born in Adjuntas, Puerto Rico, she had lived in Elizabeth and Linden before moving to Westfield five years ago.
Mrs. Demeter had been an assembler with the Revlon Corporation in Edison for 20 years before retiring 17 years ago.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Guild in Elizabeth.
Surviving are two daughters, Sandra M. Araneo and Ivette Anzelone; two brothers, Ralph Pelliccia and Rene Pelliccia; two sisters, Elsie Cabral and Helen Albanese; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A Mass was offered on Saturday, July 1, in St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Rahway, following the funeral from the Mastapeter Funeral Home in Roselle Park.
Stephanie Evans, 90
Stephanie Evans, 90, of St. Louis, Mo., died on Sunday, June 25, 2000 in the Bethesda Dillworth Memorial Home in Kirkwood, a suburb of St. Louis.
Born in Terre Haute, Ind., she had lived in Kearny and Mountainside for many years before moving to St. Louis.
Mrs. Evans had been an administrative assistant at Children’s Specialized Hospital in Mountainside before retiring.
Earlier, she had been a legal secretary at the hospital.
Surviving are a son, Arnold Evans of St. Louis, Mo.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Thursday, June 29, at the Gray Funeral Home, 318 East Broad Street in Westfield.
