PAUL N. ROCKAFELLOW, 91, of Freehold Township died May 5 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold Township. Born in Little York, he lived in Keansburg, Red Bank, Middletown, Keyport and Millstone Township before relocating to Freehold Township. He was vice president of Rockafellow Construction Co., Matawan. He was a member of the Reformed Church of Freehold. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances Hyer, who died in 1994; and a daughter, Betty R. Rockafellow, in 1993. He is survived by a son, Bertram N. Sr. of Freehold Township; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Private graveside services were held at Maplewood Cemetery, Freehold Township.
RUTH M. CRAPARO FLANNIGAN, 69, of Middletown died May 8 at home. Born in Union Beach, she lived in Red Bank prior to moving to Middletown 48 years ago. She was a counter helper at Bevacqua’s Deli, North Middletown, for 20 years, retiring in 1984. She was a former member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Middletown First Aid and Rescue Squad. She was predeceased by her brother, Herman Craparo Jr. in 1997. She is survived by her father, Herman Craparo of Hazlet; two sons, Ralph "Skip" Flannigan of Middletown, and Michael Flannigan of Keansburg; three daughters, Mary Baxley and Sandy Wilhelm of Middletown, and Allison Dipietro of Holmdel; two brothers, William Craparo of Middletown, and James Craparo of Atlantic Highlands; 21 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
EDITH BURKE DeMUTH, 62, of Howell died May 8 at CentraState Medical Center, Freehold. Born in New York City, she relocated to New Jersey in 1968. She was a sales representative for Verizon for 21 years, retiring in 2001. Prior to that, she was an assistant buyer with B. Altman & Co., New York City. She is survived by her daughter, Adrianne DeMuth of West Long Branch; four sons and one daughter-in-law, Andrew DeMuth of Freehold, William and Tracie Cogen DeMuth of Howell, Joseph DeMuth of Howell, and Christopher DeMuth of Howell; two brothers, Adrian Burke of Bethel, Conn., and Frank Burke of Canada; and an aunt and uncle.
JOSEPH P. DeFAZIO, 76, of Long Branch died May 13 at Gateway Care Center, Eatontown. Born in Long Branch, he was a lifelong resident. He was a mail room operator at Shadow Lawn Bank, and was employed at Calabretta and Sons, both Long Branch. Prior to that, he was a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service, Long Branch, for 33 years, retiring in 1987. He was a parishioner, usher and lector at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch, as well as a member of its Holy Name Society. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. His memberships included the Long Branch Exchange Club, and the I.A.M.A., Long Branch. He was also a manager and ex-president of the Long Branch Tri-City Little League. He is survived by his wife, Josephine Rubino DeFazio of Long Branch; two sons and daughters-in-law, Raymond G. and Toni DeFazio of Tinton Falls, and Jack J. and Susan DeFazio of West Virginia; his brother and sister-in-law, Louis and Saundra DeFazio of Long Branch; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. THERESA ANN BOVA SKERL of Long Branch died May 12 at the Center for Hospice Care at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Long Branch, she was a lifelong resident. She was a parishioner at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. She was predeceased by a brother, Gregory Bova, in 1993. She is survived by her husband, Stanley J. Skerl of Long Branch; her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Edie Skerl of Ocean Township; her daughter and son-in-law, Maria and Joseph Renzella of Neptune City; four brothers, Ralph Bova of Scottsdale, Ariz., Peter Bova and Joseph Bova, both of Oceanport, and Paul Bova of Middletown; and a sister, Frances Cartier of Middletown. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, Long Branch. Entombment was at Woodbine Mausoleum, Oceanport. MARY VESPA FENIELLO, 87, of the Lincroft section of Middletown died May 21 at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation, Red Bank. Born in Italy, she lived in Jersey City for 60 years and moved to Lincroft 12 years ago. She worked part-time at Modern Hatters, Jersey City, for 25 years. She was also a homemaker. She was a communicant of St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church, Lincroft. She was predeceased by her husband, Joseph Feniello, in 1987. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Annette F. and Martin Weiss of Tinton Falls; her brother, Nicholas Vespa of Paterson; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held May 24 at 10 a.m. at St. Leo the Great Roman Catholic Church. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Arlington. BRIG. GEN. PETER E. GENOVESE JR., USAR (retired), 64, of Brick Township died May 19 at The Medical Center of Ocean County, Brick, after a battle with leukemia. Born in Perth Amboy, he lived in Holmdel prior to moving to Brick Township. He worked in his family’s business in Red Bank prior to joining the U.S. Army as a tactician and battalion commander. He rose in command to a full colonel at age 42, and was promoted to brigadier general at age 47. Following his tour with the Army, he joined the New Jersey National Guard, and then ran Crate’s Beverages Inc., Red Bank. He was a military graduate of the University of Scranton, Pennsylvania; the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; the U.S. Army War College, Carlisle Barracks, Pa.; and the National War College, Washington, D.C. He was past president of the Red Bank Rotary Club, receiving its honor of a Paul Harris Fellowship. He was on the boards of the Red Bank Chamber of Commerce, the American Red Cross, the Boy Scouts of America, the American Cancer Society, and the Association of the U.S. Army, Fort Monmouth Chapter. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Margaret Sacco Genovese of Brick Township; his daughter, Tamara Sulzbach of Brick Township; three sons, Peter Genovese III of Holmdel, Keith Genovese of Manalapan, and Jeffrey Genovese of Oceanport; his brother, Frank Genovese of Holmdel; two sisters, Theresa Drapczuk and Maryann Yori, both of Holmdel; his mother, Josephine Allocco; and several grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held May 24 at 11 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. GRACIE ELISA McMANUS, 1-month-old daughter of Jannetje and Kevin McManus, Fair Haven, died April 21 at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Born March 22 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank, she died as a result of complications from leukemia. She is survived by her parents; two brothers, Kyle and Derek of Fair Haven; her maternal grandparents, Evelyn and Wallace D. Van Siclen of Merritt Island, Fla., formerly of Fair Haven; her paternal grandparents, Barbara and Robert H. McManus of Potomac, Md.; five aunts; five uncles; and five cousins.
