HELEN V. BILLINGS LUKER, 88, of Middletown died May 10 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Shrewsbury, she lived in Red Bank and Shrewsbury prior to moving to Middletown 13 years ago. She was an assembly worker for Red Bank Clothing for 22 years, retiring in 1976. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Middletown. She was predeceased by her husband, Everett Luker in January. She is survived by several nieces and nephews. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
FRANCIS G. "HANK" KILEY, 82, of Hazlet died May 9 at home. Born in Jersey City, he moved to Hazlet 45 years ago. He was the owner of the Kiley Bar, Hazlet, from the late 1960s to 1974; and the owner-operator of Colonial Liquors, Shrewsbury, from 1974 to 1992. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a communicant of Holy Family Roman Catholic Church, Union Beach, and a past vice president of the parish’s Holy Name Society. He was one of the original organizers and a coach for the Hazlet Pop Warner Football program in the early 1960s. He was predeceased by a son, Thomas J., who died in 1972. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Helen Cowan Kiley; three sons, Frank G. of Tinton Falls, Eugene G. of Hazlet, and Robert W. of Brick; a daughter, Mary Dill of Brick; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Holy Family Church, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. ESTHER R. MENNELLA ROSCHER, 78, of Eatontown died May 22 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she resided there until moving to Eatontown 10 years ago. Mrs. Roscher was an insurance underwriter for Continental Insurance Co., New York City. She served with the U.S. Army during World War II. She was a member and past commander of the Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post, Brooklyn, N.Y. She was also selected to be on the honor guard during a visit by Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt in New York City. Mrs. Roscher was predeceased by her husband, William, who died in 1976; and by two brothers, Buddy and Louis Mennella. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Tom Rule of Little Silver, and Eileen A. and James Cahill of Rumson; a brother, Joseph Mennella of Dix Hills, N.Y.; two sisters, Gloria DeSantola of Little Silver and Anne Dalton of Staten Island, N.Y.; and five grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. HENRY "HANK" A. DEININGER, 76, of Brick died May 25 at Brick Hospital. Born in New York City, he lived in Sea Bright and Rumson before moving to Brick 13 years ago. Mr. Deininger was a driver for Detail Doctor, Shrewsbury, the past two years. Prior to that, he was a custodian for the Colts Neck School System, retiring seven years ago. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a communicant of Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, Rumson. Mr. Deininger was a past volunteer fireman for Oceanic Hook and Ladder, Rumson. He was a member of the Colts Neck School Retirees Association. His hobbies included music, dancing and reading. He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Deininger. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Henry R. and Joan Deininger of Highlands; two daughters and sons-in-law, Charise I. and Brad Renner of Sea Bright, and Julie and Shawn Gatta of West Long Branch; a sister, Jean Fricault of Maspeth, N.Y.; his companion, Sandy Bland of Brick; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. Interment was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown.
ELEANOR POWELL COURTNEY, 78, of Middletown died May 28 at the Jersey Shore Rehabilitation Center, Eatontown. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., she lived in New York City prior to moving to Middletown in 1960. She worked a various nursing positions in New York and New Jersey. Prior to that, she was a lieutenant in the Navy Nurse Corps during World War II, and served in Bethesda Naval Hospital, Maryland, and Dublin, Ga. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Her hobbies included reading and spending time with her family. She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Courtney, in 1991. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas and Trenia Courtney of Newtown, Pa., and James and Patricia Courtney of Howell; her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Robert Halligan of Rumson; and nine grandchildren. Visitation will be May 31 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John F. Pfleger Funeral Home, Middletown. A funeral gathering will be June 1 at 8:45 a.m. at the funeral home. A funeral liturgy will follow at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Queens, N.Y.
JoANN FILAN, 62, of Whiting died June 2 at home. Born in Newark, she resided in West Orange, Brick and Middletown prior to moving to Whiting in 1998. She was a homemaker. She was a parishioner of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, Whiting. She was predeceased by her husband, Francis Filan in 1995. She is survived by her son, Daniel F. Filan of Hazlet; five daughters, Nancy J. Filan of Jackson, Mary C. Hamernick of Freehold Township, Barbara A. Von Oeson of Ocean Township, Linda J. Filan of Whiting, and Sandra J. Hoagland of Keansburg; her mother, Mary Forrest of Union; two sisters, Roberta Murphy of Maplewood and Diane Liccese of Orland Park, Ill.; and seven grandchildren. A Rite of Committal will be held at C.H.T. Clayton & Son Funeral Home, Adelphia June 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church, Jackson. Interment will be at Adelphia Cemetery.
VINCENT C. DeMAIO, 79, of the River Plaza section of Middletown died June 2 in Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he lived in Matawan and Fayetteville, Ark., prior to moving to River Plaza in 1951. He opened his own law firm, DeMaio & DeMaio, in 1964. Prior to that, he was a partner in the firm of Heuser, Heuser & DeMaio, a lecturer at Seton Hall University School of Law, Newark, and an associate professor at law at the University of Arkansas School of Law. He served as the Middletown Township Democratic Party Leader, as well as Township Attorney. He was former president of the Matawan Chamber of Commerce, former treasurer of the Monmouth Bar Foundation, and served as legal counsel for numerous school districts and Boards of Education. His community activities included serving as an Explorer Scout Troop Leader and Little League Baseball coach. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Jo Anne Pels DeMaio of River Plaza; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Theresa J. DeMaio and Charles Turner of Washington, D.C.; Deborah C. Maciewicz of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township; and Catharine M. and Thomas O’Brien of O’Fallon, Mo.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David A. and Teresa DeMaio of Barnegat, and Andrew J. and Deborah DeMaio of Holmdel; his sister, Sadie DeMaio of Matawan; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Visitation will be June 6 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at John E. Day Funeral Home, Red Bank. A Mass of Christian Burial will be June 7 at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport. JAMES JOHN MEAGHER, 64, of West Long Branch died June 11 at home. Born in Allentown, he lived in Trenton prior to moving to West Long Branch in 1966. He was a school psychologist with the Middletown school system for more than 20 years, retiring in 1998. He served with the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Margaret Kelly Meagher. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Carol Graham Meagher of West Long Branch; three daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and Albert Fico of the Wayside section of Ocean Township, Kristin and Jeffrey Davis of the Oakhurst section of Ocean Township, and Carolyn and Richard Egan of West Long Branch; two brothers, Joseph Meagher of Groveville, and John Meagher of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; his sister, Erin Sampson of Tabernacle; and seven grandchildren.
